Meaningful Last Minute Mother's Day Gifts
Mother’s Day is tomorrow. If that news puts you in a panic because between finals and hectic work days you have yet to get a gift, we are here to help. Is your mom impossible to shop for? Use what you know! Recognize the passions you see in her and think about how you can buy a gift that supports her interests. Maybe she loves her quiet time in the morning — get her a new mug and her favorite tea to start off her day. Or maybe she loves springtime gardening — buy her a new pair of gardening gloves or some fun plants for her yard. By keying into her habits and hobbies, you can find a multitude of gift ideas and show your mom just how well you know her. Does your mom call you every day? Think about getting her a coffee shop gift card with the promise to catch up in-person. A gift like this is two-fold because you’re not just giving her a gift card, you’re giving her your time. This can be a great way to craft deeper meaning out of a simple gesture. Coffee tastes far better when shared with your mom, after all. Does your mom insist she doesn’t want a gift? Sometimes, when your mom says she doesn’t want anything, she does actually means it. The good news is you don’t have to buy her something to show her you appreciate her. Do something for your mom instead! Give the kitchen a deep clean, offer to run her errands, make dinner for her — and let her use her extra time to relax or do something she enjoys. Haven’t talked to your mom in a while? Flowers are an easy, yet beautiful gift you can give to your mom to show her that you’re thinking of her, even if your relationship has been distant. A.J. Foyt gets first pro victory 1957
On this day in 1957, race car driver A.J. Foyt (1935- ) scores his first professional victory, in a U.S. Automobile Club (USAC) midget car race in Kansas City, Missouri.
A tough-as-nails Texan, Anthony Joseph Foyt, Jr. raced midget cars–smaller vehicles designed to be driven in races of shorter distances–and stock cars before moving up to bigger things in 1958, when he entered his first Indianapolis 500 race. Foyt won his first Indy 500 crown in 1961, when rival Eddie Sachs was forced to make a tire change in the final laps, giving Foyt the chance to overtake him and win with a then-record average speed of 139.13 mph.
The 1964 season saw Foyt earn a record-setting winning percentage of .769 with 10 wins in 13 races. His most important win that year came in the Indy 500, which he finished with an average speed of 147.45 mph. After a near-fatal crash in a stock car race in 1965–in which he broke his back, fractured his ankle and suffered severe chest injuries–Foyt came back to continue his string of impressive achievements. In 1967, he won his third Indy 500 in a car he had designed himself, with his father Tony as chief mechanic. Two weeks later, he traveled to France and won the 24 Hours of LeMans international competition with teammate Don Gurney. With a win at the Daytona 500 in 1972, Foyt became the first driver to win all three major races in motor sports: the Indy 500, the Daytona 500 and the 24 Hours of LeMans.

Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
The duo Woodrow, based in Bushkill, PA, performs a variety of familiar classic rock, folk, and country tunes featuring songs from artists such as Fleetwood Mac, The Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Janis Joplin, Merle Haggard, and more. They can be seen at various local wineries, brew pubs, tasting rooms, small bars and coffee houses as well as larger outdoor festivals. They can also frequently be found supporting their local community and arts scene by performing at community festivals, art shows, and non-profit events. Guitarist and vocalist Brian Bramkamp's spacey-blues leads are inspired by greats
such as Jerry Garcia, Eric Clapton, Warren Haynes, and David Gilmore. Brian also writes the music and lyrics for all of the original tunes on Woodrow's upcoming album “Way Out in the Weeds”. Vocalist Theresa Ratliff takes the lead on most of Woodrow's cover tunes and originals. Theresa's vocal career started in musical theater at the age of 11 (although her mother will tell you she popped out singing!), but her passion has always been Rock and Blues. She takes her inspiration from strong female vocalists like Janis Joplin, Grace Potter, and Stevie Nicks and who fearlessly broke into the “boy's club” of
rock's lead singers. Woodrow also performs regularly with the Juggernaut String Band, with Brian on guitar and vocals and Theresa on vocals, ukulele, and percussion. The Juggernaut String Band performs a wide variety of music including covers of classic rock, folk, bluegrass, country songs, parade and sing-along songs, as well as original music.
Bill Graff is our featured artist. Bill was originally born and resided in N.J. I moved to the Pocono region in 1989 and have lived here ever since. He feels the picturesque scenery of the Pocono Mountains gives him inspiration for my art work. He is self-taught and his wildlife pictures are just beautiful. He recently retired and plans on devoting his time to his art work. He also enjoys painting on different materials such as antique saws, driftwood and anything that catches his eye while walking through yard sales or walking with nature in the mountains. He feels blessed to have this talent and immensely enjoys painting.
AARP to Meet
Slate Belt AARP Chapter 4135 will hold its next meeting May 14th at 1:30pm at the Senior Center. The picnic will be held June 11th at 1pm. Please contact Deanna at 610-588-4623 if you are coming to the picnic. AARP is also planning a bus trip to Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick from September 16-24, 2018. Please call Deanna for more information if you are interested in going on this trip which is also open to the public.

A HUGE yard sale will be held as a fundraiser for the East Bangor United Methodist Community Church. The sale will be on Friday, May 18th, and Saturday, May 19th from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. It will be held at two (2) locations: Birchwood Road/Tucker Rd. off of Locke Heights Rd., Bangor, and 105 Stewart St., East Bangor.

Ice Cream Social
The Wind Gap Legion Auxiliary will be hosting an Ice Cream Social on Saturday May 19th from 11 am - 2 pm for Veterans, Active Duty Military personnel and their families. This is also Armed Forces Day, a day to pay tribute to our American Heroes.
We will have ice cream cones and a "Make Your Own Sundae" bar free for these folks. We strive to bring veterans and our community together to show them our appreciation and offer support when they need it. We also invite our local community to join us as well and ask only for a small donation to help defray the costs. The Wind Gap Legion Auxiliary will be hosting an Ice Cream Social on Saturday May 19th from 11 am - 2 pm for Veterans, Active Duty Military personnel and their families. This is also Armed Forces Day, a day to pay tribute to our American Heroes.
We will have ice cream cones and a "Make Your Own Sundae" bar free for these folks. We strive to bring veterans and our community together to show them our appreciation and offer support when they need it. We also invite our local community to join us as well and ask only for a small donation to help defray the costs. We ask that everyone work on the honor system and if you set up early please do not sell anything until the start of the swap meet. We will have someone come around and collect the money. The West Bangor Memorial Association will hold its Annual Memorial Day Program on Monday, May 28, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at the Memorial Site, Second Street, West Bangor. The year 2018 is the 71 st Anniversary of continuous Memorial Day services in West Bangor.
The principal speaker will be State Senator Mario M. Scavello representing the 40th Legislative District comprising a portion of Northampton and Monroe Counties. Prior to becoming a Senator, he served in the PA House of Representatives for more than a Decade. His local offices are located in Tannersville, Pen Argyl and Mt. Bethel, a Satellite Office.
Loretta DeNicuola will recognize the “Four Chaplains” on the 75th Anniversary of the torpedoed ship by a German submarine. The crew was on the U.S.A.T. Dorchester when the ship was lost in 27 minutes. The Chaplains displayed extraordinary Faith, Courage, and Selfishness, while assisting the crew members.
The Roper Quartet will render musical selections. Rosalyn Pennington and Gianna Greggo, will give recitations of “Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address” and “In Flanders Fields.” Walter Cole will play “Taps” in honor of deceased service men and women. The Rev. Msgr. Vincent P. York, pastor of St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish, Pen Argyl will offer the Invocation and Benediction.
In case of inclement weather, services will be held at St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church Social Hall, Verona Drive, West Bangor. The public is invited to attend.
Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
Alex Allegra enjoys connecting with people through her music. She performs regularly, entertaining audiences with her original songs as well as select Country classics and Country Pop favorites. No stranger to the stage, Alex Allegra got her start studying acting, dance and vocal performance for more than a decade while participating in a number of local theater programs and audition-only choral groups. About 5 years ago, she combined some lyrics with one of the melodies she created, and her first song, Put Aside My Flaws, came to life. This new-found passion led to a breakthrough opportunity in the summer of 2015, when she was selected to attend the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp for aspiring singer-songwriters in Interlochen, Michigan. While there, she was featured in two public concerts, performing her first original as well as a song she wrote at camp. In August 2016, she launched her first music video featuring her song, Sayin' Goodbye, and in October of that same year, she released a demo CD, "My Journey," that features 7 of her originals. In the fall of 2017, Alex Allegra headed to Nashville to continue her music studies at Belmont University. You can learn more about Alex Allegra at www.alexallegramusic.com.
The May 28th Art Show and Sale is dedicated to the late Jim Smeltz. Jim was a long time impressionistic painter in the area. His artwork has been sold worldwide. Jim was especially talented not only with his artwork but also an excellent teacher who has introduced hundreds of blooming artists in the area to painting. His contributions to our community are countless and his many friends are evidence of the respect he gave and received. This show is to honor his memory and give our community a chance to purchase some of his precious works. Jim was an outstanding artist, teacher, friend, and family member. He is missed by all who knew him.

The legionnaires, lead by the Bangor Area High School Band under the direction of Mr. Eric Hahn, will depart from the Post home located on Garibaldi Ave at 8:30 a.m. and proceed to the New Catholic Cemetery where services will be held at 9:00. The contingent will then move to the Roseto Presbyterian Cemetery on Liberty St for services at 9:30. The final graveside services will be held at the Catholic cemetery adjacent to Our Lady of Mt
Carmel church at 10:00. From this cemetery the legionnaires will proceed to the Municipal Plaza on Garibaldi Ave for the Community Services at the War Monuments beginning at 10:45 a.m. These services will also include the clergy from the area churches. In addition students from DeFranco Elementary and Faith Christian School will read their winning essays on the topic “WHAT MEMORIAL DAY MEANS TO ME”. An oratorical presentation will be given by a student from Bangor Middle School.
Wreaths will be placed on the War Monuments by the Post. In the event of inclement weather, the community services will be held indoors at the Post Home at 143 Garibaldi Ave.

Doc Pappalardo was suckled by Pennsylvania Dutch wolves and rescued by itinerant Sicilian Stone-cutters who settled on the banks of the Delaware River. Doc was raised up there in the wilds of Shawnee-on- Delaware, home to a ridiculous number of famous people, including Jackie Gleason and Mr. Green Jeans, whose bass still travels with the band. Doc fondly remembers listening to the Grand Old Opry on his Grandmother’s gigantic Philco radio in his formative days, when everybody else was listening to do-wop and top forty hits. Multi-instrumentalists, The Renegade Ramblers are a loose tribe of musicians who delight in playing blues and traditional and original bluegrass music, with brief raids into Irish and Americana music.
Tonight we welcome David Sandt, Photographer, of Star Mountain Studio, as our featured artist! David's pictures are a visual testament to the beauty of the Poconos and near-by regions. Dave has charmed many visitors with his shows and many beautiful pictures hang in a multitude of houses and businesses throughout the area. Dave will be showing and selling his beautiful pieces of art inside the depot.

At MEGA Sports Camp, kids can participate in basketball and kickball (or sports basics for the little ones). It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.

Junior Week at Tuscarora Inn & Conference Center and Tuscarora Inn & Conference Center will be held from July 8 at 3 PM to July 14 at 10 at Tuscarora Inn & Conference Center, 3300 River Rd, Mount Bethel.
Junior Week is one of the best weeks of the year at Tuscarora. It is an exciting week of camp while also teaching the gospel story for kids. The impact of this week will last a lifetime.
Designed especially for those finished with 2-6 grades, Junior Week campers experience outdoor activities, costume parties, fun music, drama skits, crafts and more! Your child will do more during Junior Week than any other week of the year!

The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration. Although work on the hoist and pavilion is still underway, progress is so advanced that we can look forward to this event next summer.

Ride for Relief
Ride for Relief is a motorcycle charity run organized by Pastor Chris and members of the First United Methodist Church that will take place on Saturday, July 14th. The ride will be a 50+ mile tour of the scenic Slate Belt region, beginning and ending at the First United Methodist Church. The ride is raising money for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), and all funds will be allocated for United States disaster relief.
Registration completed prior to June 15th will be discounted at a rate of $25 per rider and $15 per passenger. Registrations after June 15th will be $30 per rider and $20 per passenger. Every registration includes the ride, food, and a T-shirt.
