Green Walk & Nestles Educate Local Students
Green-Walk Trout Hatchery and Deer Park Spring Water partnered Monday to host an informative school district tour for Washington Elementary School students. About 115 students toured Green-Walk Trout Hatchery and Deer Park’s Greenwaltz Springs, which are located on the same property. Employees from Deer Park and Green-Walk talked to the students about the importance of water stewardship and gave them a tour of the property, which is located in Washington Township and owned by both Nestlé Waters North America and Green-Walk Trout Hatchery. Students viewed the spring facilities, hatch house, trout ponds, and vernal pond, and participated in a nature walk. Nestlé Waters North America is the third largest non-alcoholic beverage company by volume in the U.S., They provide people with an unrivaled portfolio of bottled water as healthy hydration. Among them are natural spring water brands such as Poland Spring ®, Deer Park®, Zephyrhills® and Arrowhead®. Its national purified water brand is Nestlé® Pure Life®. International brands include Perrier® and S.Pellegrino®. The company's line of ready-to-drink teas now includes Nestea®, Sweet Leaf® and Tradewinds®. A Forgotten Tradition![]() Maybe there really was a time when America was more innocent. Back when May Basket Day was a thing, perhaps. The curious custom — still practiced in discrete pockets of the country — went something like this: As the month of April rolled to an end, people would begin gathering flowers and candies and other goodies to put in May baskets to hang on the doors of friends, neighbors and loved ones on May 1.
In some communities, hanging a May basket on someone's door was a chance to express romantic interest. If a basket-hanger was espied by the recipient, the recipient would give chase and try to steal a kiss from the basket-hanger. Perhaps considered quaint now, in decades past May Basket Day — like the ancient act of dancing around the maypole — was a widespread rite of spring in the United States. Through the 19th and 20th centuries, May Basket Day celebrations took place all across the nation: A reporter in the Sterling, Ill., Gazette in 1871 explained the seasonal ritual this way: "A May-basket is — well, I hardly know how to describe it; but 'tis something to be hung on a door. Made of paper generally, it contains almost anything, by way of small presents you have in mind to put in it, together with your respects, best wishes — love, perhaps. It is hung after dark at the door of anybody the hanger fancies. — Which done, the said hanger knocks and scampers." The writer went on to say, in the spirit of the times, that if a boy hangs a May basket on a girl's door and the girl catches him, "it's a great disgrace." If a girl is the hanger, "it disgraces the boy again not to catch her." In Dunkirk, N.Y., the Evening Observer observed on April 30, 1932, that young people were collecting samples from wallpaper dealers and "creating baskets of all sorts and varieties as to size, shape, and color, and will hang them on the doors of their friends at dusk on May Day." Writing in the Humboldt, Iowa, Independent in May 1976, the local extension home economist reminisced: "What a gallant occasion Mother made of May baskets. Lists were made and rewritten. It became almost as exciting as Christmas." Her family used old milk cartons for containers and they made popcorn and Boston cremes for each basket. People in her community returned May baskets to their owners at Halloween. Here and there you can find recollections of May Basket Days past. Marci Matson, director of the historical society in Edina, Minn., writes: "The practice has a long history, stemming from the European pagan festival of spring, Beltane. The more raucous elements were toned down after the continent became Christianized, but the May pole dance and May baskets survived in a more G-rated form." Louisa May Alcott wrote about May Basket Day in New England in her 1880 children's book Jack and Jill. From Alcott's story: "Such a twanging of bells and rapping of knockers; such a scampering of feet in the dark; such droll collisions as boys came racing round corners, or girls ran into one another's arms as they crept up and down steps on the sly; such laughing, whistling, flying about of flowers and friendly feeling—it was almost a pity that May-day did not come oftener." Eventually, May Basket Day — like the spring flowers arranged in the baskets — began to wilt and droop. "Remember May Basket Day?" a syndicated columnist asked in the spring of 1963. So what happened? Maybe the ritual receded because of a national fall from innocence. Or an increased desire for get-off-my-lawn privacy. Maybe modern innovation overwhelmed the May basket tradition. Whatever the case, Madonna Dries Christensen, a writer in Florida, is not totally sure she wants the habitual ritual to flourish again. "I harbor a fear that some major company will rediscover May Basket Day and mar its simplicity with commercial baskets, cards and trinkets," she writes in her 2012 memoir, In Her Shoes: Step By Step. "To ward off that calamity, please do not share this ... with anyone who might be in cahoots with such a manufacturer." News Shorts.........

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - May 1
Empire State Building dedicated 1931
On this day in 1931, President Herbert Hoover officially dedicates New YorkCity’s Empire State Building, pressing a button from the White House that turns on the building’s lights. Hoover’s gesture, of course, was symbolic; while the president remained in Washington, D.C., someone else flicked the switches in New York.
The idea for the Empire State Building is said to have been born of a competition between Walter Chrysler of the Chrysler Corporation and John Jakob Raskob of General Motors, to see who could erect the taller building. Chrysler had already begun work on the famous Chrysler Building, the gleaming 1,046-foot skyscraper in midtown Manhattan. Not to be bested, Raskob assembled a group of well-known investors, including former New York Governor Alfred E. Smith. The group chose the architecture firm Shreve, Lamb and Harmon Associates to design the building. The Art-Deco plans, said to have been based in large part on the look of a pencil, were also builder-friendly: The entire building went up in just over a year, under budget (at $40 million) and well ahead of schedule. During certain periods of building, the frame grew an astonishing four-and-a-half stories a week.
At the time of its completion, the Empire State Building, at 102 stories and 1,250 feet high (1,454 feet to the top of the lightning rod), was the world’s tallest skyscraper. The Depression-era construction employed as many as 3,400 workers on any single day, most of whom received an excellent pay rate, especially given the economic conditions of the time. The new building imbued New York City with a deep sense of pride, desperately needed in the depths of the Great Depression, when many city residents were unemployed and prospects looked bleak. The grip of the Depression on New York’s economy was still evident a year later, however, when only 25 percent of the Empire State’s offices had been rented.

Tonight we welcome Pat Munz as our resident artist. Since she was a small child, she has been drawing and painting as a hobby. She dreamed to be an artist when she grew up, but her artistic style didn’t agree with the pop and abstract art of the 1970s. Pat graduated from college with a degree in Accounting, unable to take a single art class. She spent seven years as an auditor for an international oil and gas company, then joined the FBI as a Special Agent. After twenty-two years with the FBI in Anchorage, Alaska, She decided to retire and pursue art full time. She is self-taught, and paints in both oil and acrylics. Pat paints a wide range of subjects, including landscapes, animals, people (but not portraits), and old, historic buildings, often painting from photographs she has taken or by friends, and family on trips all over the US and Alaska. She is also an avid quilter, donating many quilts for charity auctions and fundraisers. As a result of conducting genealogy research on her family's ancestors, she has become interested in designing quilts of family crests and coat-of-arms, which she does on a commission basis. Pat currently lives in Shawnee on Delaware, PA, in a house built circa 1850, and she is enjoying the beautiful scenery and history that Pennsylvania has to offer, for her latest paintings and quilts. Also shareing her talents with us is Ginny Soldano.

Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
The duo Woodrow, based in Bushkill, PA, performs a variety of familiar classic rock, folk, and country tunes featuring songs from artists such as Fleetwood Mac, The Grateful Dead, Tom Petty, Janis Joplin, Merle Haggard, and more. They can be seen at various local wineries, brew pubs, tasting rooms, small bars and coffee houses as well as larger outdoor festivals. They can also frequently be found supporting their local community and arts scene by performing at community festivals, art shows, and non-profit events. Guitarist and vocalist Brian Bramkamp's spacey-blues leads are inspired by greats
such as Jerry Garcia, Eric Clapton, Warren Haynes, and David Gilmore. Brian also writes the music and lyrics for all of the original tunes on Woodrow's upcoming album “Way Out in the Weeds”. Vocalist Theresa Ratliff takes the lead on most of Woodrow's cover tunes and originals. Theresa's vocal career started in musical theater at the age of 11 (although her mother will tell you she popped out singing!), but her passion has always been Rock and Blues. She takes her inspiration from strong female vocalists like Janis Joplin, Grace Potter, and Stevie Nicks and who fearlessly broke into the “boy's club” of
rock's lead singers. Woodrow also performs regularly with the Juggernaut String Band, with Brian on guitar and vocals and Theresa on vocals, ukulele, and percussion. The Juggernaut String Band performs a wide variety of music including covers of classic rock, folk, bluegrass, country songs, parade and sing-along songs, as well as original music.
Bill Graff is our featured artist. Bill was originally born and resided in N.J. I moved to the Pocono region in 1989 and have lived here ever since. He feels the picturesque scenery of the Pocono Mountains gives him inspiration for my art work. He is self-taught and his wildlife pictures are just beautiful. He recently retired and plans on devoting his time to his art work. He also enjoys painting on different materials such as antique saws, driftwood and anything that catches his eye while walking through yard sales or walking with nature in the mountains. He feels blessed to have this talent and immensely enjoys painting.

Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
Alex Allegra enjoys connecting with people through her music. She performs regularly, entertaining audiences with her original songs as well as select Country classics and Country Pop favorites. No stranger to the stage, Alex Allegra got her start studying acting, dance and vocal performance for more than a decade while participating in a number of local theater programs and audition-only choral groups. About 5 years ago, she combined some lyrics with one of the melodies she created, and her first song, Put Aside My Flaws, came to life. This new-found passion led to a breakthrough opportunity in the summer of 2015, when she was selected to attend the prestigious Interlochen Arts Camp for aspiring singer-songwriters in Interlochen, Michigan. While there, she was featured in two public concerts, performing her first original as well as a song she wrote at camp. In August 2016, she launched her first music video featuring her song, Sayin' Goodbye, and in October of that same year, she released a demo CD, "My Journey," that features 7 of her originals. In the fall of 2017, Alex Allegra headed to Nashville to continue her music studies at Belmont University. You can learn more about Alex Allegra at www.alexallegramusic.com.
The May 28th Art Show and Sale is dedicated to the late Jim Smeltz. Jim was a long time impressionistic painter in the area. His artwork has been sold worldwide. Jim was especially talented not only with his artwork but also an excellent teacher who has introduced hundreds of blooming artists in the area to painting. His contributions to our community are countless and his many friends are evidence of the respect he gave and received. This show is to honor his memory and give our community a chance to purchase some of his precious works. Jim was an outstanding artist, teacher, friend, and family member. He is missed by all who knew him.

Music Monday at Dansbury Depot
Doc Pappalardo was suckled by Pennsylvania Dutch wolves and rescued by itinerant Sicilian Stone-cutters who settled on the banks of the Delaware River. Doc was raised up there in the wilds of Shawnee-on- Delaware, home to a ridiculous number of famous people, including Jackie Gleason and Mr. Green Jeans, whose bass still travels with the band. Doc fondly remembers listening to the Grand Old Opry on his Grandmother’s gigantic Philco radio in his formative days, when everybody else was listening to do-wop and top forty hits. Multi-instrumentalists, The Renegade Ramblers are a loose tribe of musicians who delight in playing blues and traditional and original bluegrass music, with brief raids into Irish and Americana music.
Tonight we welcome David Sandt, Photographer, of Star Mountain Studio, as our featured artist! David's pictures are a visual testament to the beauty of the Poconos and near-by regions. Dave has charmed many visitors with his shows and many beautiful pictures hang in a multitude of houses and businesses throughout the area. Dave will be showing and selling his beautiful pieces of art inside the depot.

MEGA Sports Camp
Hey parents! Ready to drop a ton of fun right into your child’s summer? Then MEGA Sports Camp is right hosted by First United Methodist Church of Bangor is for you. The camp will be held Jun 18 - Jun 22 at 6:00pm at the Pennico Park in South Bangor.
First United Methodist Church in Bangor is offering kids entering kindergarten thru 5th grades one awesome time. “We want to give kids the chance to learn more about sports, discover character-building concepts, learn about God’s love, and have a whole lot of fun,” says Pastor Chris Hardy.
At MEGA Sports Camp, kids can participate in basketball and kickball (or sports basics for the little ones). It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.
Between sports sessions, coaches lead in songs and help kids experience inspiring sports and Bible stories to help character-building themes take hold in kids’ hearts. And most importantly, kids will discover God’s great love for them.
So come on over to Pennico Park in Bangor, hosted by First United Methodist Church. It starts on Monday, June 18th and lasts through Friday, June 22nd, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm each evening. For more information and registration check out our website at www.firstumcbangor.com.
