The fire weather threat is due to a combination of gusty winds and dry conditions. Westerly winds between 15 to 20 MPH today will gust frequently between 25 to 30 mph today. Relative humidity values are already at or below 30 percent early this morning. The relative humidity may fall into the lower 20s or even teens later this morning and afternoon. These conditions combined with dry fine fuels, such as dead leaves and grasses, will increase the risk for rapid fire spread. Outdoor burning is highly discouraged today. NWS Advisory for 2-4 Inches of Snow The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for 2-4 inches of snow, which is in effect from midnight tonight to noon Friday for Northeastern Pennsylvania and central and northern New Jersey. Rain will overspread the area and start to mix in with snow from north to south overnight tonight. A changeover to all snow will also occur from north to south within a few hours after the rain starts. The snow will become moderate to briefly heavy at times late tonight and into the start of the Friday morning commute before gradually tapering off toward midday. Local untreated roads will become snow covered and slippery, especially at higher elevations along and north of I-78. Poor visibility in heavier snow could also impact driving. Conditions will result in hazardous travel for the Friday morning commute. Temperatures will be in the upper 30s and lower 40s at the onset, then quickly falling into the lower and mid 30s overnight. Visibility will be one-half mile or less at times..

Officers Awarded Commendations Three Washington Township police officers were awarded police commendations by Washington Twp Police Chief Scott Miller Monday night during a meeting of the Washington Township Supervisors.
On Monday October 24, 2016 the Washington Township Police Department responded to a burglary at the Santander Bank, 71 Bangor Junction Road, Washington Twsp in Blue Valley Plaza. Damage done during the burglary required closing of the bank for the day. Bank employees told Chief Miller that there was a break-in overnight. According to reports, it was learned later that a husband and wife team from Bangor climbed on to the roof of the bank and cut a hole in the roof using power tools. Thanks to the work of Washington Twp off-duty Police Sgt. James Krome and Officers Tom Beiser and Molly Brown the crime was eventually solved. Brown was the lead investigator in the case, canvassing the area talking to business owners and residents. She also collected video surveillance from area business which proved to be valuable evidence. Officer Beiser, who has extensive knowledge and training in cellphone forensics, was able to identify the suspects through phone triangulation and mapping. The couple was also thought to be involved in a robbery netting $10,000 in Monroe County and another at the Tobacco Outlet in Plainfield Twp in which more than $3,500 in cigarettes were stolen. Season three began December 28 at the Hanover nest. The cameras and audio equipment installed for the 2016 season continue to provide excellent views and audio of this eagle family.
The live stream began December 17, 2016 shortly after the installation of two new cameras and audio equipment. Eggs were laid on February 18 and 21. March 28 one of the eggs hatched; the nestling died two days later, perhaps injured by a branch being moved in the nest. The other egg never hatched and remained n the nest until May 23 when one of the adults removed the remnants from the nest.
Hanover is located in south-central PA about five miles from the Mason-Dixon line.

Barbie makes her debut - 1959
On this day in 1959, the first Barbie doll goes on display at the American Toy Fair in New York City. Eleven inches tall, with a waterfall of blond hair, Barbie was the first mass-produced toy doll in the United States with adult features. The woman behind Barbie was Ruth Handler, who co-founded Mattel, Inc. with her husband in 1945. After seeing her young daughter ignore her baby dolls to play make-believe with paper dolls of adult women, Handler realized there was an important niche in the market for a toy that allowed little girls to imagine the future.
Barbie’s appearance was modeled on a doll named Lilli, based on a German comic strip character. Originally marketed as a racy gag gift to adult men in tobacco shops, the Lilli doll later became extremely popular with children. Mattel bought the rights to Lilli and made its own version, which Handler named after her daughter, Barbara. With its sponsorship of the “Mickey Mouse Club” TV program in 1955, Mattel became the first toy company to broadcast commercials to children. They used this medium to promote their new toy, and by 1961, the enormous consumer demand for the doll led Mattel to release a boyfriend for Barbie. Handler named him Ken, after her son. Arkansas college student juggles to prove sobriety to police
(UPI) -- A college student in Arkansas used his juggling skills to prove his sobriety after being pulled over by a campus police officer.
Blayk Puckett, a junior at the University of Central Arkansas, was driving slowly as he left campus one night when an officer pulled him over.
"A lot of times, especially around a college campus later in the night, the driving gets slower, especially if they almost hit a curb once, it's typical indication they might be impaired," Sgt. Keith McKay of UCA police told Arkansas Matters.
Puckett said he was driving slowly because his car had a broken tail light and the officers determined he was sober, but the license plate that read "JUGGLER" was the feature of the rear of his car that drew the officer's attention.
"I'm a magician, but I also juggle," Puckett said after the officer asked what was in his pocket.
He then used the opportunity to simultaneously show off his juggling skills and prove that he wasn't driving under the influence.
"It's just more fun when you can juggle and have more fun with the officers than a standard traffic stop that's boring and scary," Puckett said.
McKay also noted the fun of the experience and said it was the first time he had experienced something like that at a traffic stop.
"I try to make as much fun as I can but this was absolutely the most fun I've had any time I'm treated to that," he said.

(BPT) - As you get closer to your delivery date, many decisions lie ahead, all centered around care, maternity leave and even decorating the baby's room. But one question may rise to the top: Where will you give birth?
If you are like most expectant mothers, you will be giving birth in a hospital. In spite of the rising popularity of home births, most moms choose hospitals to have their babies. The most recent statistics released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that fewer than 2 percent of babies born in the U.S. are born in a home setting.
When you're looking at where to give birth, expectant parents should consider the following while choosing a hospital, according to the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association (BCBSA).
Where does your doctor go? The place to begin is with your doctor. Most women go to the hospital where their physician has admitting privileges. So when you choose your doctor, the hospital where your baby will be born is tied into that. Discuss your birth plan in detail with your physician and make sure you both are at an understanding. If you have specific preferences, ask your doctor if they can be accommodated. For example, if this is not your first child, and you want to try a vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC), have that discussion in detail with your physician. What to do when a senior loved one wanders
(BPT) - Virtually all parents have experienced the terror of looking up from what they were doing only to realize their child has wandered off. Your pulse races, your heart pounds and you can't relax until your child is back in sight. As children grow up, they learn to stay put - or at least let you know where they're going - and your fears fade.
If you become a caregiver for a parent, grandparent or other loved one with dementia, you may find yourself having the same fear if your loved one begins to exhibit a concerning symptom- getting lost or wandering.
The Alzheimer's Association says six out of 10 people with Alzheimer's experience episodes of wandering. The behavior can take many forms, from leaving the house without telling anyone to leaving and then becoming too disoriented to find their way home. Wandering can also occur at night, when a person with Alzheimer's gets out of bed and wanders inside the house - or more concerning, goes outdoors - in the dark.
"Wandering is one of the potentially most dangerous symptoms of dementia," says Juliet Holt Klinger, senior director of dementia care for Brookdale Senior Living. "The Alzheimer's Association notes that up to half of those who wander will suffer serious injury, or even die, if not found within 24 hours. It's important for caregivers to understand why and how wandering happens, when it occurs and what they can do to prevent or minimize occurrences."
Why wandering occurs
To understand why your loved one may be wandering, look for a pattern, Holt Klinger advises. Does he wander at a particular time of day or night? Is she trying to communicate with you? Do they have an unmet physical or psychological need, like being hungry or thirsty, or feeling lonely? Is an undiagnosed medical problem, such as a urinary tract infection, prompting the person to get out of bed at night?
Sleep patterns change as we age, and those changes can be pronounced and concerning for people with dementia.
Wandering safety tips
Common coping strategies for night-time wandering include:
* Help people living with Alzheimer's differentiate between day and night by making sure they're exposed to plenty of natural light during the day.
* Encourage at least 30 minutes of exercise every day, but not within four hours of bedtime.
* Discourage daytime sleeping by keeping people with Alzheimer's engaged in meaningful activity.
* Avoid serving alcohol, caffeine or large meals as bedtime approaches.
* Encourage a bathroom visit right before bedtime.
* Avoid screen time (white light) directly prior to bedtime and use amber-colored night lights which do not disrupt REM sleep patterns.
* Practice relaxation methods like a short, light massage, warm bath, hot milk or herb tea, or reading aloud.
* For extreme wandering concerns, consider investing in a monitoring system that will alert you when a loved one gets out of bed at night.
For daytime episodes of wandering, try:
* Hiding car keys. This can prevent loved ones from leaving the house, getting in the car and losing their way.
* Keeping doors locked.
* Equipping doors with an alarm to signal when it is opened. This can be as simple as putting a bell on the door.
* Staving off wandering impulses by taking your loved one for frequent walks outdoors.
* Occupying your loved one with a relatable, doable task that provides a sense of purpose.
"Sometimes, despite your best efforts and precautions, wandering can remain a concern," Holt Klinger says. "If that happens, it may be time to consider a move to a senior living community that specializes in caring for people with Alzheimer's and other dementias. Brookdale's Clare Bridge communities are secured and designed to promote a sense of independence, safety and purpose.

BHS Class of 1986 Scholarship
A memorial scholarship was established in 1997 by the Bangor Area High School Class of 1986 to honor the memory of deceased classmates. It is named in Gary Moffett's honor because he not only served as Class Treasurer, but he also touched the lives of all who had the privilege to know him. They have since dedicated this memorial scholarship to recognize other classmates who have passed in recent years: David Pritchard, Cherry Oyer Klinger, Frank Lisovich, Melissa Fox Niceforo, and Kelly Cory.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement.
Anyone interested in applying for the scholarship should see the guidance counselor at Bangor High School.
A scholarship award of $500.00 will continue to be presented annually to a member of the graduating senior class at Bangor High School who best exemplifies the qualities which Gary embodied -- leadership, friendship, service, character, and scholastic achievement. The recipient is chosen by Gary's wonderful and loving family, and is announced during Commencement.

The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow.
Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history.

Letters to Homefront Magazine
A Love Story Between a Community and its World War II Soldiers
The project to publish a book about the Homefront Magazine began in October 2015. The co-authors; Marc Blau, Chip Turtzo, Karen Brewer and Deanna Ruzanski assembled volunteers to read and summarize the 4000 + letters that WW II soldiers sent home to their beloved Homefront Magazine.
The letters were then categorized by topic, and placed into appropriate chapters. Some of the chapters are: The Fairest of the Month, Battlefield Stories, Soldier’s Artwork, Poems and Prayers, Heroes and more.
The book highlights the letters and used the hand-written words of our Slate Belt fighting men and women to tell the story. Many of your fathers and grandfathers are mentioned in the book and while it was unfeasible to use all of the letters, those that were chosen was based on content. Books can be picked up on Sunday April 23, 2017 from 9 -Noon., however to unsure that copies are available for all who would like a copy, pre-orders are now being taken.

Outdoor Sportsmen’s Harvest Celebration Dinner
The 12th Annual Outdoor Sportsmen’s Harvest Celebration Dinner will be held from 6 to 8:30 pm Saturday, March 18 at Trinity Lutheran Church at 404 Broadway, Bangor.
A traditional menu plus specially prepared wild game dishes to sample will be served.
Guest speakers Brett and Zac Coryell will speak on Falconry and Birds of Prey. Brian Siegfried will present a comedy monologue.
Over 100 hunting and fishing equipment items will be awarded to lucky raffle ticket holders.
The cost is $15 for adults, $6 for children under 12, and those under 6 eat free.

Slate Belt Youth Baseball Field Clean Up
Please save the date for our annual Field Clean-Up day for the Slate Belt Youth Baseball Association to be held on Saturday, March 25. A rain date is set for Saturday, April 1.
