Bangor's Ben Holland shoots over Central Catholic's 6-8 Keeshaun Kellman during the Slaters' 52-31 loss to the Vikings in the District XI 5A title game played Thursday night at Pleasant Valley. Bangor Down But Not Out.............. Bangor gave powerful Allentown Central Catholic all it could handle for nearly three quarters until the Slaters' shooting went south and Bernard Davis went to the bench with his fourth personal foul. The Vikings reaped the rewards of the Slaters' misfortune and pulled away for a 52-31 win and District XI 5A gold in a game played Thursday night at Pleasant Valley.
The Slaters jumped to an early 5-2 lead only to see the Vikings make an 11-0 run to close out the first quarter, leading 13-5 at the buzzer. The Slaters bounced back with an 8-1 surge as Tony Jones scored four points, Davis made a bucket and Saber Singleton's three tied the game at 14-14. The score was still tied at 19-19, thanks to a three by Ben Holland, when the Vikes scored a three with just seconds left in the half to lead 22-19 at intermission. With Central clinging to three-point lead at 27-24 midway through the third quarter, fate opened the door for Central when Bangor's Bernard Davis, who had been a force inside from the game's outset, picked up his third and fourth personal fouls on a couple of incidental bumps and went to the bench. Four minutes later, the Vikings stretched their lead to 40-29 going into the fourth quarter. Bangor only managed two points in the final period as Allentown Central coasted to the district title. The good news is Bangor (23-3) gets to play another day since District XI 5A is allowed to send two teams into the state tourney. The Slaters will play Lampeter-Strasburg from the Lancaster area which is the District III sixth place team. Bonus points:

Redheads Increased Risk for Parkinson's? A 2009 study of more than 130,000 people who were followed for 16 years found that those with lighter hair colors were at increased risk for Parkinson's disease compared to those with black hair.
Redheads had the highest risk — they were nearly twice as likely to develop Parkinson'compared to people with black hair. About 1 to 2 percent of the human population has red hair. Redheads have genes to thank for their tresses. Research shows red hair usually results from a mutation in a gene called MC1R, which codes for the melanocortin-1 receptor. The pigment found in red hair that makes it red is called pheomelanin. But redheads as a group have more in common than only their hair color -- certain health conditions appear to be more common among people with red hair By Rachael Rettner, LiveScience Senior Writer The Truth Behind “In Like A Lion, Out Like a Lamb” If March comes in like a lion, it will go out like a lamb.Is there any truth to this saying? Weather folklore sayings are as colorful as our imagination. While many sayings are based on careful observations and turn out to be accurate, others are merely rhymes or beliefs of the people who came before us.
Those people often believed that bad spirits could affect the weather adversely, so they were cautious as to what they did or did not do in certain situations. Those beliefs often included ideas that there should be a balance in weather and life. So, if a month came in bad (roaring like a lion), it should go out good and calm (docile, like a lamb). With March being such a changeable month, in which we can see warm spring-like temperatures or late-season snowstorms, you can understand how this saying might hold true in some instances. We can only hope that if March starts off stormy it will end on a calm note, but the key word is hope. However, this saying seems be to more of a rhyme rather than a true weather predictor. Some other March-related weather lore includes:
First Day of Spring March 20 or 21? Farmers' Almanac
Traditionally, we’ve celebrated the first day of spring on March 21, but astronomers and calendar manufacturers alike now say that the spring season starts one day earlier, March 20, in all time zones in North America. When is the first day of Spring in 2018? We greet spring this year with the Vernal Equinox on Tuesday, March 20, at 12:15pm Eastern Time. There are a few reasons why seasonal dates can vary from year to year. The first is that a year is not an even number of days and neither are the seasons. Another reason is that the earth’s elliptical orbit is changing its orientation (skew), which causes the earth’s axis to constantly point in a different direction, called precession. Since the seasons are defined as beginning at strict 90-degree intervals, these positional changes affect the time the earth reaches each 90-degree location in its orbit around the sun. The pull of gravity from the other planets also affects the location of the earth in its orbit. The current seasonal lengths for the Northern Hemisphere are: Summer — 93.641 days Autumn — 89.834 days Winter — 88.994 days Spring — 92.771 days As you can see, the warm seasons, spring and summer, combined are 7.584 days longer than the colder seasons, fall and winter (good news for warm weather admirers). However, spring is currently being reduced by approximately one minute per year and winter by about one-half a minute per year. Summer is gaining the minute lost from spring, and autumn is gaining the half a minute lost from winter. Winter is the shortest astronomical season, and with its seasonal duration continuing to decrease, it is expected to attain its minimum value — 88.71 days — by about the year 3500. Another complication revolving around the vernal equinox concerns the length of day versus night. We have been taught that on the first days of spring and autumn, the day and night are equal to exactly 12 hours all over the world. Yet, if you check the calendar pages in our Almanac, you will find that this is not so. In fact, our tables tell you that on the days of the spring and fall equinox, the length of daylight is actually longer than darkness by several minutes. The reason this happens can be attributed to our atmosphere. If the earth was a planet that did not have an atmosphere, then yes, on the equinox days the length of the day and night would be exactly even. However, our atmosphere acts like a lens and refracts (bends) its light above the edge of the horizon. Put in another way, when you watch the Sun either coming up above the horizon at sunrise, or going down below the horizon at sunset, you are looking at an illusion — the Sun is not really there, but already below the horizon. As a result, we actually end up seeing the Sun for a few minutes before its disc actually rises and for a few minutes after it has actually set. Thus, thanks to atmospheric refraction, the length of daylight on any given day is increased by approximately six or seven minutes. NCC to Stage “The Trojan Women”

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - March 4FDR inaugurated 1933 On March 4, 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Franklin Delano Roosevelt is inaugurated as the 32nd president of the United States. In his famous inaugural address, delivered outside the east wing of the U.S. Capitol, Roosevelt outlined his “New Deal”–an expansion of the federal government as an instrument of employment opportunity and welfare–and told Americans that “the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Although it was a rainy day in Washington, and gusts of rain blew over Roosevelt as he spoke, he delivered a speech that radiated optimism and competence, and a broad majority of Americans united behind their new president and his radical economic proposals to lead the nation out of the Great Depression. Born into an upper-class family in Hyde Park, New York, in 1882, Roosevelt was the fifth cousin of Theodore Roosevelt, who served as the 26th U.S. president from 1901 to 1909. In 1905, Franklin Roosevelt, who was at the time a student at Columbia University Law School, married Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, the niece of Theodore Roosevelt. After three years as a lawyer, he decided to follow his cousin Theodore’s lead and sought public office, winning election to the New York State Senate in 1910 as a Democrat. He soon won a reputation as a charismatic politician dedicated to social and economic reform. Roosevelt supported the progressive New Jersey governor Woodrow Wilson in his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, and after Wilson’s election in 1912 Roosevelt was appointed assistant secretary of the U.S. Navy, a post that Theodore Roosevelt once held. In 1920, Roosevelt, who had proved himself a gifted administrator, won the Democratic nomination for vice president on a ticket with James Cox. The Democrats lost in a landslide to Republicans Warren Harding and Calvin Coolidge, and Roosevelt returned to his law practice and undertook several business ventures.
