Protecting Consumers from Unsafe Breaches
To help protect consumers from having their personal information stolen or used fraudulently, the House passed two bipartisan bills this week to address data breaches. House Bill 1846 would require notice within 45 days to residents of the Commonwealth when there is a breach of security of a system. The notice must be in plain language, and include the date of the breach, the type of information subject to the breach, and toll-free numbers to credit reporting agencies. Similarly, House Bill 1847 would waive the current fee to freeze a credit report, which is $10 for each request, should a data breach occur. In the instance of a data breach, consumers would be provided with three months of free credit monitoring and up to three free credit reports for one calendar year after the date the breach is reported. Consumers are urged to be proactive in monitoring their credit reports and financial account statements, such as credit cards and utilities, by clicking here. To report any suspicious activity, call the attorney general office’s hotline at 1-800-441-2555 or atscams@attorneygeneral.gov. Election Deadlines Pennsylvania’s General Primary Election will be held Tuesday, May 15. If you want to vote that day, there are some important milestones you need to remember.

Dyeing Easter eggs is a fun tradition that’s been around for centuries. So, how did our ancestors make all of those bright colors back before commercial egg dyes were sold in stores every spring? They used natural Easter egg dye colors.
Making natural Easter egg dye colors out of fruits, vegetables, and other everyday items you can find in your home or garden is both easy and fun. Everything from onion skins to grass can be used to make vibrant all-natural colors. Just throw the raw materials into the boiling water while you cook the eggs — you’ll need to boil each color separately — and you’re good to go! For really vivid color, be sure to add at least a half a cup of dyeing material, and two teaspoons of vinegar, for each cup of water you use. In a medium pan, put in a single layer of eggs, enough water to cover them, and your dyeing materials. Bring the water to a boil, then reduce the heat and let the eggs and dye mixture simmer for about 15 minutes. If you want the color on your eggs to be darker, let the eggs soak in the dye mixture in the fridge overnight. Here are some natural ingredients you can use for various dye colors: Purple: Grape juice, red wine, violets (works best mashed into a paste with lemon juice). Blue: Canned blueberries (including the juice), red cabbage leaves. Green: Grass cuttings, spinach leaves. Yellow: Carrot tops, Ground Cumin or turmeric, orange or lemon peels. Brown: Coffee, strong tea. Orange: Carrots, chili powder, paprika. yellow onion skins. Pink: Canned beets (with juice), cranberry juice, raspberries. January, 2018 - Streams from two cameras at the nest site went live. One camera is more of a side angle and the other a view from above, which also has infrared capabilities for night viewing.. December 2017 - Staff members from HDOnTap and Codorus State Park worked through the cold and wind to replace and rewire cables at the nest site. Some of the nest had fallen. Calling all young chess players! Northampton Community College (NCC) will offer its 17th Annual Spring Youth Tournament on Saturday, March 24, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at College Center, on the Bethlehem Campus. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - March 24Exxon Valdez runs aground 1989 One of the worst oil spills in U.S. territory begins when the supertanker Exxon Valdez, owned and operated by the Exxon Corporation, runs aground on a reef in Prince William Sound in southern Alaska. An estimated 11 million gallons of oil eventually spilled into the water. Attempts to contain the massive spill were unsuccessful, and wind and currents spread the oil more than 100 miles from its source, eventually polluting more than 700 miles of coastline. Hundreds of thousands of birds and animals were adversely affected by the environmental disaster. It was later revealed that Joseph Hazelwood, the captain of the Valdez, was drinking at the time of the accident and allowed an uncertified officer to steer the massive vessel. In March 1990, Hazelwood was convicted of misdemeanor negligence, fined $50,000, and ordered to perform 1,000 hours of community service. In July 1992, an Alaska court overturned Hazelwood’s conviction, citing a federal statute that grants freedom from prosecution to those who report an oil spill. Exxon itself was condemned by the National Transportation Safety Board and in early 1991 agreed under pressure from environmental groups to pay a penalty of $100 million and provide $1 billion over a 10-year period for the cost of the cleanup. However, later in the year, both Alaska and Exxon rejected the agreement, and in October 1991 the oil giant settled the matter by paying $25 million, less than 4 percent of the cleanup aid promised by Exxon earlier that year.

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, April 12th @ 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be Mr. Joel Hoffner who will present: “Genealogy Tricks, Traps, Trails, Tribulations and Triumphs”. Mr. Hoffner is a Research Assistant at the Sigal Museum in Easton and is a long time genealogist. This program is in conjunction with the Center’s new exhibit in the Council Chamber; “Who Do You think We Are”? This year long event explores the detective story behind everyone’s family tree. Using clues from Slate Belt stories, the exhibit follows families back to their roots, much like the popular TV shows, “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You think You Are”? Mr. Hoffner will provide answers to those seeking to trace their roots while avoiding pit-falls along the way. The event is free and open to the public. Jacktown-Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association May Swap Meet is right around the corner! These are first come first serve spots and are $50.00 each this year and money will be collected as you set up. Just a reminder that there are no gun sales allowed. They will be posting more as the time gets closer. Please feel free to share! The Swap Meet is May 19th and 20th. Spots are available on a first come first serve basis. A spot is 20' X 25' and are $50.00 per spot and allows you both days. You can use more than one spot, but you will need to pay $50.00 for each additional spot you use. If you only want to stay one day the charge is still $50.00. You may start setting up as early as Wednesday May 16th and we will be by to collect at that time. We ask that everyone work on the honor system and if you set up early please do not sell anything until the start of the swap meet. We will have someone come around and collect the money. Slater Youth Baseball Association Pre-season workouts start THIS week for interested players at the gym at the Tuscarora Inn in Mt. Bethel on the following dates and times.
*Players ages 9 and 10 as of May 1, 2018 may attend the Minors sessions. *Players age 11 and 12 may attend the Majors sessions.
