Tinea Versicolor Can Affect Your Skin
Tinea versicolor is a fungal infection caused by an overgrowth of yeast that normally lives on the skin, Ploch said. When yeast overgrows — in humid climates, on oily skin or in people who work outdoors — it interferes with skin pigmentation, causing patches of skin discoloration. Pink, tan or white spots may develop on skin, and the spots may form patches of lighter or darker skin that may become dry or scaly.
This common infection can be easily treated with anti-fungal medicines, Ploch said. Topical creams, lotions or shampoos that contain anti-fungals may be applied to the skin to clear the yeast overgrowth, she said.

Why We Wear Green on St. Patrick's Day
Green wasn't even St. Patrick's Day's original color.
Every March 17, we break out every piece of green clothing and jewelry, don shamrock-shaped pins and glasses, and dye our bagels and beverages (particularly alcoholic ones) green. Not quite the way people celebrated St. Patrick’s Day in the 7th century.
Back then, St. Patrick’s Day was a religious holiday celebrated only in Ireland, and green wasn’t even part of the equation. The original color associated with St. Patrick’s Day was actually blue. Early depictions of St. Patrick show him wearing blue, and the official color of the Order of St. Patrick, part of Ireland’s chivalry, was a sky blue known as “St. Patrick’s Blue.” So how did the feast day of the patron saint of Ireland get this obsession with green?
One of the reasons green replaced blue was because of Ireland’s nickname, The Emerald Isle. The green stripe in the Irish flag also played a role. Traditionally, the green represents the Catholics of Ireland, the orange represents the Protestant population, and the white in the middle symbolizes the peace between the two religions.
The religious symbolism doesn’t stop there. St. Patrick used green shamrocks to teach people about the Holy Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit), another justification for greenifying everything.
Of course, we can’t talk about St. Patrick’s Day without mentioning leprechauns. Back in the day, these mischievous little guys were said to wear red and gold jackets with pointy red hats. Now they’re rarely seen anything other than green, and, legend has it, they pinch anyone not wearing their favorite color.
And isn’t that reason enough to wear green?

December 2017 - Staff members from HDOnTap and Codorus State Park worked through the cold and wind to replace and rewire cables at the nest site. Some of the nest had fallen. Two adult eagles have been frequenting the site with nesting material.

Born in Great Britain, probably in Scotland, to a well-to-do Christian family of Roman citizenship, Patrick was captured and enslaved at age 16 by Irish marauders. For the next six years, he worked as a herder in Ireland, turning to a deepening religious faith for comfort. Following the counsel of a voice he heard in a dream one night, he escaped and found passage on a ship to Britain, where he was eventually reunited with his family.
According to the Confessio, in Britain Patrick had another dream, in which an individual named Victoricus gave him a letter, entitled “The Voice of the Irish.” As he read it, Patrick seemed to hear the voices of Irishmen pleading him to return to their country and walk among them once more. After studying for the priesthood, Patrick was ordained a bishop. He arrived in Ireland in 433 and began preaching the Gospel, converting many thousands of Irish and building churches around the country. After 40 years of living in poverty, teaching, traveling and working tirelessly, Patrick died on March 17, 461 in Saul, where he had built his first church.

Gearing Up for Kindergarten
The Bangor Area School District will be offering the spring Gearing Up for Kindergarten program beginning this March. The program will be held at the Washington Elementary School on Tuesdays and the Five Points Elementary School on Wednesdays from March 6 to March 27, 2018 from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM.
Nazareth Area Garden Club to Meet
The first meeting of the Nazareth Area Garden Club's 2018 season will be held on March 20th at 7:00 p.m., at the Dryland UCC Church, 4415 Newburg Road in Lower Nazareth, PA. Membership Dues of $15 will be collected and the Member Booklet for the year will be distributed.
A demonstration of Floral Mandalas will be presented by members Vicky Woodard and Bambi Sampson.
Featured specimens this month are Crocus, Hellebores, Pussy Willow, and other forced blossoms as well as a dish garden, African Violets, Ferns, and Cacti. Two Arrangements, "Prim and Proper" and "Sow your Seeds" will also be presented for competition.
As always, our meetings are open to the public and refreshments will be served. We meet on the third Tuesday of each month from March through November. Please call Patti Moser, 610-462-2664, for more information.

There will be stories, a craft, and lots of fun and silliness. All children are welcome. You won't want to miss it! The Bangor Public Library is located at 39 S. Main St., Bangor.
This was rescheduled when it was canceled because of the weather on March 13.

Last month the restored, 154-year-old railroad station was selected by the Monroe County Historical Association as a site where historic preservation is noteworthy. Calling all young chess players! Northampton Community College (NCC) will offer its 17th Annual Spring Youth Tournament on Saturday, March 24, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., at College Center, on the Bethlehem Campus. Rated and non-rated players are invited. Prizes and trophies will be awarded.
There will be United States Chess Foundation (USCF)-rated rounds for young people ages 18 and younger, and non-rated rounds for children ages 14 and younger. Each player will get to play 5 rounds. Parents are welcome to attend.

Fistner Family Benefit Easter Egg Hunt
Northampton County 4-H will hold a benefit Easter Egg Hunt at the 4-H Center, 777 Bushkill Center Road, Nazareth, PA on Saturday, March 31. There will be a $5.00 per person participation fee and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Fistner Family who lost their home and its contents on March 12. A parent must accompany all youth to the event. Registration is at 9:30 am and the hunt begins at 10:00 am.
There will also be activities the day of the hunt which include: Photo with the Easter Bunny ($5.00); Silent Auction 9:30 am to 11:00 am with closeout at 11:30 am; and a Clothing Drive.

The Washington Township Volunteer Fire Company will host an Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, March 31st at 10 a.m. for children ages 0 to 12. It will be held at Washington Township Recreation Field.
Fistner Family Benefit Easter Egg Hunt
Northampton County 4-H will hold a benefit Easter Egg Hunt at the 4-H Center, 777 Bushkill Center Road, Nazareth, PA on Saturday, March 31. There will be a $5.00 per person participation fee and 100% of the proceeds will benefit the Fistner Family who lost their home and its contents on March 12. A parent must accompany all youth to the event. Registration is at 9:30 am and the hunt begins at 10:00 am.
There will also be activities the day of the hunt which include: Photo with the Easter Bunny ($5.00); Silent Auction 9:30 am to 11:00 am with closeout at 11:30 am; and a Clothing Drive.
Items needed for the clothing drive for each family member are:

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards.

The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, April 12th @ 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be Mr.
Joel Hoffner who will present: “Genealogy Tricks, Traps, Trails, Tribulations and Triumphs”. Mr. Hoffner is a Research Assistant at the Sigal Museum in Easton and is a long time genealogist. This program is in conjunction with the Center’s new exhibit in the Council Chamber; “Who Do You think We Are”? This year long event explores the detective story behind everyone’s family tree. Using clues from Slate Belt stories, the exhibit follows families back to their roots, much like the popular TV shows, “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You think You Are”? Mr. Hoffner will provide answers to those seeking to trace their roots while avoiding pit-falls along the way. The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1 st Street, Bangor, PA.

Ogham Art Tile Class
Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m..
Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2.
The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up.
Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children.

Annual Earth Day Celebration hosted by Waste Management's Grand Central Environmental Education Center will be held Sunday, April 22 at 11 AM - 2 PM at Waste Management's Grand Central Environmental Education Center 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania 18072 The event will include presentations by Bear Mountain Butterflies and the P.T. Reptiles!! (YES REPTILES THIS YEAR!! YAY!) They will also be recognizing some of the great Scouts that have achieved Eagle Status for the projects completed at the Education Center. Ogham Art Tile Class
Celtic Cultural Alliance is excited to announce an Ogham Art Tile Class, led by Nancy Lewis. This workshop takes place in two sessions: April 18th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. and April 25th from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m..
Come join us for a fun night of exploring the Ogham alphabet, and then create your own design in a clay slab. After it is fired, come back to class one week later and glaze it. The ceramic piece can be picked up at Celtic Cultural Alliance after May 2.
The Ogham alphabet was used to represent the Primitive Irish language using a series of perpendicular and intersecting lines, written vertically, and then read from bottom to top. This class is suitable for ages 16 and up.

Jacktown-Blue Mountain Antique Gas & Steam Engine Association May Swap Meet is right around the corner! These are first come first serve spots and are $50.00 each this year and money will be collected as you set up. Just a reminder that there are no gun sales allowed. They will be posting more as the time gets closer. Please feel free to share!
The Swap Meet is May 19th and 20th. Spots are available on a first come first serve basis. A spot is 20' X 25' and are $50.00 per spot and allows you both days. You can use more than one spot, but you will need to pay $50.00 for each additional spot you use. If you only want to stay one day the charge is still $50.00. You may start setting up as early as Wednesday May 16th and we will be by to collect at that time. We ask that everyone work on the honor system and if you set up early please do not sell anything until the start of the swap meet. We will have someone come around and collect the money. Our club depends on these funds to keep it running. Please help us keep Jacktown going for years to come. The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration. Although work on the hoist and pavilion is still underway, progress is so advanced that we can look forward to this event next summer.

Slater Youth Baseball Workouts
Slater Youth Baseball Association Pre-season workouts start THIS week for interested players at the gym at the Tuscarora Inn in Mt. Bethel on the following dates and times.
*Players ages 9 and 10 as of May 1, 2018 may attend the Minors sessions. *Players age 11 and 12 may attend the Majors sessions.
Dates:
February 12, 14, 26, 28 . March 5, 12, 14, 19, 21, 26, 28
*Minors will be held from 6-7:30pm . *Majors will be held from 7:30-9pm
Please note these sessions are limited to the first 25 players due to limited space.
Also very important, please check the Facebook page on each scheduled date to ensure there is no cancellation due to unforeseen circumstances or inclement weather.
The Tuscarora Inn is located at 3300 River Road in Mt. Bethel.
**Any established coach from the 2017 season who is interested in helping out during these sessions, please contact Nick Kornafel at [email protected].
