What Really Scares People - The Dark![]() For many kids, lights out can mean immediate distress that the boogey man, or some variation, will pop out from beneath the bed or behind a closet door. In fact, being afraid of the dark is one of kids' most common fears.
"What always amazes us are the thoughts or beliefs that kids have," said Thomas Ollendick, professor of psychology and director of the Child Study Center at Virginia Tech. "Kids believe everything imaginable, that in the dark robbers might come or they could get kidnapped, or someone might come and take their toys away." Essentially, their fears stem from "the unexpected," he said. While kids grow out of such fears, if the anxiety reaches extreme levels and is considered a phobia, called nyctophobia, Ollendick says that can last through adulthood if left untreated. . By Jeanna Bryner, Live Science Managing Editor Sleeping Twice a Day is Good for You![]() Here's a way to celebrate the lost hour of sleep after switching daylight saving time —and it's not an extra grande cup of coffee. Take a nap.
Plenty of studies show that losing sleep is bad for your health, and a series of recent studies show that the days after the time change may see a rise in serious heart incidents in particular. In fact, we should be sleeping twice a day in shorter chunks instead of one long block of tossing and turning through the night, according to Australian researchers. A 2016 study from the Centre for Sleep Research at the University of South Australia, find that having two separate sleep periods provides "two periods of increased activity, creativity and alertness across the day, rather than having a long wake period where sleepiness builds up across the day and productivity wanes." The researchers also noted that having two sleep periods was once the norm at various points in history across the world. Melinda Jackson, a senior research fellow at Australia's RMIT University, and Siobhan Banks, a senior research fellow quoted a passage from the 1840 Charles Dickens novel "Barnaby Rudge" where a character refers to his "first sleep" — which presumably came before losing limbs to dangerous factory machinery and inhaling soot — and then taking a second nap. Jackson and Banks believe the Spaniards are on to something with their traditional siesta, a two- to three-hour lunch break taken at 2 p.m. typically used for a nap. Our body clock naturally lends itself to the siesta because of a reduction in alertness in the early afternoon, which is also probably why there was a national uproar when Spain's prime minister announced in April that he wants to put an end to siestas. They cited a 1990 study by psychiatrist Thomas Wehr that found that "bi-phasic sleep," which is a science-y phrase for two separate four-hour blocks of sleep, is "a natural process with a biological basis." While the benefits of a split sleep schedule also include allowing more flexibility with work and family time, reducing the instances of insomnia, serving as an alternative to night shift work, and increasing alertness, there are some downsides, according to the researchers. Namely, telling your boss you want to take a three-hour nap in the middle of the day instead of closing the Heffernan account doesn't usually go over too well in most American workplaces. Plus, the timing has to be right for each sleep session in order to fall asleep quickly and stay asleep, so just flopping onto a bed or couch at two random times during the day won't necessarily produce positive results. But, if you can steal 20 minutes of quick nap time about eight or nine hours after you wake up today — a restorative nap doesn't need to be longer than that — that will help you conquer any lingering daylight saving grogginess. Making Our Schools Safer
This Thursday, March 15, the House Education Committee will hold a public hearing to examine school safety preparedness. You will be able to watch the meeting on my website, www.RepEmrick.com. School security, especially the prevention and handling of active shooters and other emergency situations, will be one of the topics of discussion. Pennsylvania schools are required to have in place an emergency plan, but that may or may not cover active shooter situations. Under Act 55 of 2017, schools are encouraged to conduct at least one security drill per school year in each school building. The security drills may be used in place of one of the school’s monthly fire drills. Washington, DC – On March 9, President Donald Trump signed into law a bill introduced by U.S. Representative Mat Cartwright (PA-17) that would protect older, low-income veterans who require assisted care. H.R. 3122, the Veterans Care Financial Protection Act, directs the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) to work with other federal agencies and states to develop and implement standards that protect veterans from predatory practices associated with the Aid & Assistance (A&A) benefit. The VA offers the A&A benefit for veterans who qualify for a VA pension and who need financial help with in-home care or assisted living. The A&A application is free, but scam artists have targeted veterans and unscrupulously charged them to obtain these benefits. Scammers have had success in taking ahold of unsuspecting veterans’ assets, and at times have been able to move them into an irrevocable trust or an annuity where they cannot be accessed for many years. Such a movement of assets may also disqualify the veteran from other assistance, like Medicaid. “It’s been appalling, financial nightmare for some veterans, but today’s action signals an end to this kind of predatory treatment,” said Rep. Cartwright. “Greater financial protection for our nation’s heroes was definitely needed, and the new law will put a stop to these fraudulent schemes and ensure that veterans, not the scammers, will receive the value of their hard-earned benefits.”

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - March 15Johnson calls for equal voting rights 1965 On this day in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson addressed a joint session of Congress to urge the passage of legislation guaranteeing voting rights for all. Using the phrase “we shall overcome,” borrowed from African-American leaders struggling for equal rights, Johnson declared that “every American citizen must have an equal right to vote.” Johnson reminded the nation that the Fifteenth Amendment, which was passed after the Civil War, gave all citizens the right to vote regardless of race or color. But states had defied the Constitution and erected barriers. Discrimination had taken the form of literacy, knowledge or character tests administered solely to African-Americans to keep them from registering to vote. “Their cause must be our cause too,”Johnson said. “Because it is not just Negroes, but really it is all of us, who must overcome the crippling legacy of bigotry and injustice. And we shall overcome.” The speech was delivered eight days after racial violence erupted in Selma, Alabama. Civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King and over 500 supporters were attacked while planning a march from Selma to Montgomery to register African-Americans to vote. The police violence that erupted resulted in the death of a King supporter, a white Unitarian Minister from Boston named James J. Reeb. Television news coverage of the event galvanized voting rights supporters in Congress. ![]()
