Bear Swamp Day Trip
A Bear Swamp Day Trip will be held at Bear Swamp Park/Archery Complex, 1300 Lake Minsi Drive, Bangor PA 18013 Saturday, April 14 at 10 am. Length: 2 miles Duration: 1.5 hours.
You'll walk through the archery complex first. The level trail has rocks and roots, while meandering through a pleasant forest in Upper Mount Bethel Township. You can view archery target stations as we stroll. Then you'll cross Lake Minsi Drive to the long-range archery fields, and the boardwalk around Bear Swamp. End at the “nature center” a 3-sided pavilion and a small pond. In the spring this is a good place to view turtles, frogs, and spring flowers. After you return to your cars, you will drive a quarter mile east to the western parking lot at Minsi Lake. The lake is drained so its dam can be repaired, but wild flowers and other plants cover the lake bed. It’s a lovely place to see great blue herons, butterflies, and other natural wonders. For those of you who want more walking, there’s a trail that goes around the lake and there’s a trail that goes to the eastern parking lot near the dam.
After the hike you’ll be only 2 miles from Columcille Magalith Park, http://columcille.org/, an enchanting park with large, carefully placed boulders.
This walk is appropriate for children of all ages. Dogs on leash are welcome. Sturdy footwear is recommended. Bring binoculars/camera to capture spring wildlife and plants. Bring bug repellent, sun hat and sun screen. Bathrooms: None.
Registration: Space is limited. Register online at wildlandsPA.org/GOLV for this walk or any Get Out Lehigh Valley event, or call 610-965-4397 x136.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - March 14
Albert Einstein born 1879
On March 14, 1879, Albert Einstein is born, the son of a Jewish electrical engineer in Ulm, Germany. Einstein’s theories of special and general relativity drastically altered man’s view of the universe, and his work in particle and energy theory helped make possible quantum mechanics and, ultimately, the atomic bomb.
After a childhood in Germany and Italy, Einstein studied physics and mathematics at the Federal Polytechnic Academy in Zurich, Switzerland. He became a Swiss citizen and in 1905 was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Zurich while working at the Swiss patent office in Bern. That year, which historians of Einstein’s career call the annus mirabilis–the “miracle year”–he published five theoretical papers that were to have a profound effect on the development of modern physics.
In the first of these, titled “On a Heuristic Viewpoint Concerning the Production and Transformation of Light,” Einstein theorized that light is made up of individual quanta (photons) that demonstrate particle-like properties while collectively behaving like a wave. The hypothesis, an important step in the development of quantum theory, was arrived at through Einstein’s examination of the photoelectric effect, a phenomenon in which some solids emit electrically charged particles when struck by light. This work would later earn him the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics.

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards.
To purchase tickets online you can go to: https://www.harlemwizards.com/schedule-tickets/ Find the April calendar and click on April 7th, Bangor, PA. Instructor Nancy Lewis is a talented artist who continually inspires as students as an art teacher at Liberty High School. A graduate of Kutztown University, she enjoys ceramics, watercolor and pen and ink. She resides in Bethlehem along with her husband, George, and their children.
The cost of the class is $35.00. To register for the class, please go o http://www.celticfest.org/ogham_art_class
