Winter Weather Advisory Friday 11am - 4am Saturday
A Winter weather advisory in effect from 11 am Friday to 4 am Saturday for wet snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 3 to 6 Inches at higher elevations above 800 feet and 2 inches or less in the valleys are expected. in New Jersey, Warren and Morris counties. In Pennsylvania, Northampton County and the Slate Belt. Rain will transition to snow initially along the high-elevation ridges around midday Friday and then closer to mid afternoon in the valleys. The snow will be heavy at times Friday afternoon and evening with snowfall rates of 1 inch per hour possible. The snow is expected to end from west to east overnight. Plan on very difficult travel conditions, including during the evening commute on Friday. The combination of strong northwest winds gusting to 50 mph and heavy snow could create near-blizzard conditions with visibilities below one-half mile at times. The heavy, wet nature of the snow and strong winds will likely cause damage to trees and power lines that will lead to scattered power outages, especially at higher elevations.
Potentially Damaging Winds Friday & Saturday
Low pressure will intensify near the Northeast coast on Friday.. This will bring strong to potentially damaging northwest winds to the region Friday and Friday night. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly has issued a High Wind Watch, which is in effect from Friday morning through Saturday morning. For winds from the Northwest 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Strong winds will develop during the morning hours Friday from south to north across the watch area. Winds will peak during the late morning through the early evening hours before diminishing somewhat late Friday night.
Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Numerous power outages are possible. Additionally, rain may change to snow Friday and Friday evening, especially northwest of Philadelphia. The snow combined with the wind may produce localized whiteout conditions. Travel may become very difficult as a result.

Spring Opening of Slate Belt Heritage Center
The Slate Belt Heritage Center (SBHC), located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA will be celebrating its 19th Anniversary of incorporation in conjunction with its’ Spring Opening on Saturday, April 14th. The Heritage Center is a not-for-profit 501(c) 3 organization whose mission is: To establish and offer for public view and educational purposes: artifacts, displays, DVD’s, oral histories, genealogies and research information that reflect local Slate Belt history and heritage, and to perpetuate our Slate Belt Heritage, ethnic contributions, industry and history so that future generations may learn and appreciate our valued past.
The Heritage Center occupies the former 1907 Bangor Town Hall in the heart of the Slate Belt. Displays focus on the lives of people who settled this part of America, from the Lenape to the waves of immigrants-the Scots-Irish, German, Cornish, Welsh, Italian, Jewish and others whose families live here
today. The Heritage Center also houses rooms for the textile and slate industries, in addition to the Homefront and Fire rooms.
SBHC presents Preservation Awards to people who preserve Slate Belt heritage and hosts students and teachers ranging from local 4th graders to East Coast Universities. The Center preserved nearly 3000 Slate Belt treasures which inspire heritage murals, historic building rehabs, family research and trips down
memory lane. SBHC produces programs, exhibits, and tours for community groups, schools, special events, reunions and other museums.
The Slate Belt Heritage Center produces changing exhibits, monthly programs and seasonal events. Featured this year in the Council Chamber, will be “Who Do You Think We Are” which explores the detective story behind everyone’s family tree. Using clues from Slate Belt stories, the special exhibit follows families back to their roots, much like the popular TV shows, “Finding Your Roots” and “Who Do You think You Are”? Celebrities like actress Jayne ansfield, TV star Marishka Hargitay, author Adrianna Trigiani, academy award winner Sallie Fields, actor Also Ray and musician Louis Roger have Slate Belt connections. The exhibit traces their local links but also invites you to solve your own family mysteries. Every family has its cast of characters-heroes and villains-and its misleading myths, secrets and surprises.
Everyone’s ancestors came from somewhere else and share the immigrant story about leaving home and going to a new place. The exhibit shows the ways that our families balanced between old and new identities and what kind of evidence can help you crack the mysteries of your family’s past. A 70-foot chart with 12 generations of descendants from the extended family of Adam Dietz, one of the Slate Belt’s first settlers, shows how many hundreds of people are connected to each other. See what DNA test results can and can’t reveal. Follow the kinds of clues, artifacts, documents and photographs, from which you can piece together family drama. Add your own family names to an eight-feet-tall Slate Belt Family Tree.
In conjunction with the exhibit, the Heritage Center will host two related programs. Genealogist Joel Hoffner will present a lecture, “Genealogy Tricks, Traps, Trials, Tribulations and Triumphs” on Thursday April 12th at 7:00 PM.
A hands -on workshop, “Finding Branches on Your Family Tree” is scheduled for Saturday, April 21st from 9:30 AM-12:30 PM. Join experts Cheryl Statham of Quiet Valley Farm Museum, Cindy Smith, Genealogist, Sharon Oxford Gothard, Easton Library History Room and Renee Drago, Northampton County Archivist, for a morning of discovery. Bring your family stores, research notes and question. Learn how to create your own family chart. Sign up by calling Slate Belt Heritage Center @ 610-588-4993.
SBHC is open to the public Saturdays and Sunday 12-3 PM April through October, and Sundays 12-3 PM November through March. Admission is FREE. Private tours are available upon request. Monthly presentations are held the second Thursday of each month from April-November at 7:00 PM and the

Review by Katy Albanese
Winston Churchill is well remembered as prime minister of Great Britain during WWII. His strong character and determination to stand against the Nazis
brought him world recognition at a critical time in history. But Churchill was making a name for himself way before the winds of the second world war were sweeping through Europe.
This book focuses on Churchill’s involvement in the Boer War in southern Africa in 1899. As a very young man, he craved power and recognition and sought
ways to set himself apart and above others. When war broke out between the British and the Afrikaaners, Churchill rushed to Africa and inserted himself in
the forefront of the conflict. His capture and extraordinary escape made headlines in England and his name a household word.
The author does an excellent job explaining Churchill’s backround and motivation for his actions. This wonderfully well written book will keep you reading from cover to cover..

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - March 1
Lindbergh baby kidnapped 1932
On this day in 1932, in a crime that captured the attention of the entire nation, Charles Lindbergh III, the 20-month-old son of aviation hero Charles Lindbergh, is kidnapped from the family’s new mansion in Hopewell, New Jersey. Lindbergh, who became an international celebrity when he flew the first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1927, and his wife Anne discovered a ransom note demanding $50,000 in their son’s empty room. The kidnapper used a ladder to climb up to the open second-floor window and left muddy footprints in the room.
The Lindberghs were inundated by offers of assistance and false clues. Even Al Capone offered his help from prison. For three days, investigators found nothing and there was no further word from the kidnappers. Then, a new letter showed up, this time demanding $70,000.
The kidnappers eventually gave instructions for dropping off the money and when it was delivered, the Lindberghs were told their baby was on a boat called Nelly off the coast of Massachusetts. After an exhaustive search, however, there was no sign of either the boat or the child. Soon after, the baby’s body was discovered near the Lindbergh mansion. He had been killed the night of the kidnapping and was found less than a mile from home. The heartbroken Lindberghs ended up donating the mansion to charity and moved away.

Harlem Wizards Basketball Game
The Bangor Area Middle School PTSO (Parent, Teacher, Student, Organization) is hosting its 1st Annual Harlem Wizards Basketball Game on April 7, 2018. While the PTSO is fairly new, we are running this fundraiser in hopes that we can raise enough money to assist the school with future purchases that are not in their budget such as: new library books, school supplies and equipment, funding field trips and assemblies, as well as assist with purchases for the school dances throughout the year. We wanted to take a new approach to fundraising and offer a family friendly event that would bring the community together for a great cause and promote wellness at the same time. We will have our own team consisting of teachers and staff from each school in the district as well as some High School players. Our team will be playing against the Harlem Wizards.
To purchase tickets online you can go to: https://www.harlemwizards.com/schedule-tickets/ Find the April calendar and click on April 7th, Bangor, PA.
