Does 'Werewolf Syndrome' actually exist?![]()
The first reported case of werewolf syndrome goes as far back as 1556. Petrus Gonzales of the Canary Islands was born with an abnormally hairy face and body, and his appearance intrigued people in his era. Gonzales’s condition drew so much curiosity that it brought him to the courts of King Henry II where he became a type of entertainment. Eventually, Gonzales did get married and have two children, both of whom also inherited the skin anomaly. Throughout their lives, the family continued to draw much curiosity, traveling throughout Europe and making several appearances in kingly courts. Many early cases of CHL repeat such a story, traveling as entertainers individually or with circuses. Modern Cases While you might not see many cases of werewolf syndrome, some people do still get it today. One mother and her three children recently received treatment in Nepal for the condition. While most people with CHL show signs from birth, the excessive hair growth didn’t show up in this family until later on. Devi, the concerned mother, wanted her little family to get treatment so that they could all return to a normal life. With hypertrichosis, people treated the children differently, teasing them about their appearance. How It Happens Only in modern years have scientists spotted a probable cause for such a condition. Researchers attribute excessive localized or full-body hair growth to a genetic mutation. In 1995, researchers studied the cause of CHL in a Mexican family and found an approximate location for the mutation: the X chromosome. Pennsylvania WoodMobile Coming to Quiet Valley
The Pennsylvania WoodMobile will be coming to Quiet Valley on Tuesday June 27, 2017. The WoodMobile is a traveling exhibit that provides information on the state’s forest resource and the state’s forest product industry. Visitors to the exhibit will see how the forests of Pennsylvania have shaped the history of the state and nation, learn how today’s forest differs from 100 years ago, touch the various hardwood species produced in Pennsylvania , and use touchscreen technology to interact with various threats to the forest such as invasive insects and plants, diseases and white-tailed deer. Visitors will also learn how the forest is managed in a sustainable fashion, and experience how common and unusual forest products touch their lives every day. The exhibit is included in the general admission price to the farm museum. The Pennsylvania WoodMobile is a project of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Hardwoods Development Council, with the support of the state’s hardwoods industry. The truck is provided by 20 member companies of the Pennsylvania Forest Products Association, Harrisburg, PA; and the trailer is provided by Deer Park Lumber, Inc. of Tunkhannock, PA. It is outfitted by 61 sponsoring companies. The early immigrants such as the Depper family who settled in Quiet Valley depended greatly on the forests to help them create homesteads in the wilderness. Come and learn more about the importance of hardwood trees in the past as well as the present. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a non-profit, educational corporation dedicated to the preservation and presentation of Pennsylvania’s agricultural heritage. Period-dressed “family” members reenact the life of the original Pennsylvania German farming family who lived on the farm from the late 1760s to 1913. Public tours run from the third Saturday in June through Labor Day Monday. The farm also hosts a number of special events throughout the year. CLICK HERE FOR 45-60 DAY CALENDARTHIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 27Truman orders U.S. forces to Korea - 1950 On June 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman announces that he is ordering U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to aid the democratic nation in repulsing an invasion by communist North Korea. The United States was undertaking the major military operation, he explained, to enforce a United Nations resolution calling for an end to hostilities, and to stem the spread of communism in Asia. In addition to ordering U.S. forces to Korea, Truman also deployed the U.S. 7th Fleet to Formosa (Taiwan) to guard against invasion by communist China and ordered an acceleration of military aid to French forces fighting communist guerrillas in Vietnam. At the Yalta Conference towards the end of World War II, the United States, the USSR, and Great Britain agreed to divide Korea into two separate occupation zones. The country was split along the 38th parallel, with Soviet forces occupying the northern zone and Americans stationed in the south. In 1947, the United States and Great Britain called for free elections throughout Korea, but the Soviets refused to comply. In May 1948 the Korean Democratic People’s Republic–a communist state–was proclaimed in North Korea. In August, the democratic Republic of Korea was established in South Korea. By 1949, both the United States and the USSR had withdrawn the majority of their troops from the Korean Peninsula. At dawn on June 25, 1950 (June 24 in the United States and Europe), 90,000 communist troops of the North Korean People’s Army invaded South Korea across the 38th parallel, catching the Republic of Korea’s forces completely off guard and throwing them into a hasty southern retreat. On the afternoon of June 25, the U.N. Security Council met in an emergency session and approved a U.S. resolution calling for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” and the withdrawal of North Korean forces to the 38th parallel. At the time, the USSR was boycotting the Security Council over the U.N.’s refusal to admit the People’s Republic of China and so missed its chance to veto this and other crucial U.N. resolutions. On June 27, President Truman announced to the nation and the world that America would intervene in the Korean conflict in order to prevent the conquest of an independent nation by communism. Truman was suggesting that the USSR was behind the North Korean invasion, and in fact the Soviets had given tacit approval to the invasion, which was carried out with Soviet-made tanks and weapons. Despite the fear that U.S. intervention in Korea might lead to open warfare between the United States and Russia after years of “cold war,” Truman’s decision was met with overwhelming approval from Congress and the U.S. public. Truman did not ask for a declaration of war, but Congress voted to extend the draft and authorized Truman to call up reservists. On June 28, the Security Council met again and in the continued absence of the Soviet Union passed a U.S. resolution approving the use of force against North Korea. On June 30, Truman agreed to send U.S. ground forces to Korea, and on July 7 the Security Council recommended that all U.N. forces sent to Korea be put under U.S. command. The next day, General Douglas MacArthur was named commander of all U.N. forces in Korea. Young At Heart Valley Forge Trip

1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. To nominate someone for either of these awards, please go to the Bangor Area School District web site, click on the Alumni icon (under quick links) and then click on the 1885 Club. There you will find a printable form. Fill it out and mail it to the address shown or forward it to Carole J. Hontz at Bangor Area Middle School, 401 Five Points Richmond Road, Bangor, PA 18013-5267. Music in the Valley Stroudsburg (PA) – On Saturday July 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is the place to be to enjoy the sounds of traditional music. Supported in part by a Project Stream grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the eleventh annual “Music in the Valley” will feature musical performances at various locations around the historic farm, reminiscent of how it would have been heard in the 19th century. A variety of groups will perform at the different venues and the day will end with a jam session at 3:30. As well as performances throughout the day, there will be sessions to provide visitors with an opportunity to take a closer look at the music and maybe even try a featured instrument. Puppeteer, Bonnie Scott, will hold puppet shows throughout the day and the One Room School will be open. The outdoor Bake Oven will be in operation and Wagon Rides will take place, weather permitting. There will be a seminar on traditional music presented by Norm Williams, Tom Druckenmiller, and Betty Druckenmiller. A wonderful opportunity to learn the background of songs you still know and love and how the music of our country developed through the last two centuries. The event will be held rain or shine, under tents as needed. Schedule is subject to change. Music in the Valley is included in the price of admission for the historic farm tour of $10.00 for adults and $5.00 for ages 3 – 12. The farm tours will run on Saturday from 10:00 to 5:00. Great fun for all ages, so come for a few hours or bring a picnic lunch make a day of it. All funds raised go to support the non-profit farm museum and its mission. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm is a 501(c)(3) non-profit educational corporation dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the 19th century Quiet Valley farmstead, as part of Pennsylvania’s rich agricultural heritage. The Slate Belt Heritage Center is pleased to “welcome home” Slate Belt natives Kirk and Sara Brown on Thursday, July 13th @ 7:00 PM for their monthly historic presentation. This event will coincide with the Center’s recently published book: Letters to Homefront: A Love Story Between a Community and It’s WW II Soldiers. Within a collection of hundreds of letters from more than forty men across all armed services, in all theatres throughout all the years of World War II, one set of letters and post cards stands out from the rest. It describes a story of meeting, separation, connection and loss-of-youth. It’s a correspondence that stands as the embodiment of the coming-of-age of the “Greatest Generation”. Uncovered in a battered trunk as a house was being broken-up, these letters to Margaret Frable define life in the small town of Bangor Pennsylvania and the changes that came with the dislocation of war. As a result of this discovery Kirk (Margaret’s son) and Sara Brown will present a play commemorating this unique “pen-pal” relationship. They will read a collection of these war time letters preserved by Kirk’s mother that illustrate how far we’ve come but how little we’ve changed. Sara Stine Brown hails from Portland, Pa and graduated Valedictorian of the Bangor High School Class of 1968. Kirk Brown grew up in Bangor and was Valedictorian of his Bangor High Class of 1970. It was a friendly competition that grew out of their meeting while portraying the contentious leads in Bangor’s first all school musical: Bye Bye Birdie. They have been married since 1975 and together they write, design and produce plays, have remodeled their old house, volunteered at church, and built gardens together while raising two sons. The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615 Resorts Casino Trip
