Take Extra Socks to the Airport

Picture
Odds are you just rattled off a few of the usual suspects, including bathrooms, door handles, and the seating areas around gates. But, according to one doctor, you’re missing a major culprit in the airport germ-spreading madness: Airport security.  “You don’t want to know what you can catch,” an emergency-room doctor, who was simply identified with the pseudonim Mack, told The Points Guy when asked about just how gross the security area of the airport can be. “You don’t want to know.”

But, in case you do want to know, Mack explained to The Points Guy that among other things, you could pick up a fungus when you take off your shoes to walk through the airport scanner.  pecifically, you can pick up “tinea pedis, better known as athlete’s foot,” the website explained.  “In a high-traffic area, the number of people per hour going through a checkpoint is greater at an airport than at a health club,” Dr. Michael J. Trepal, vice president for academic affairs and dean at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, additionally explained to The Points Guy. “And, theoretically, the more you expose the skin to exogenous pathogens, the more likely you are to be infected. In some cases, you could realistically walk 30 to 40 feet [without shoes].”
Furthermore, you may pick up a virus along your journey through security. In fact, you could be at risk for picking up different strains of the human papilloma virus.
Of course, you could always step on some good ol’ fashioned bacteria that could give you a nasty bug, too.  “Theoretically, you could pick up a wide variety of bacteria under the skin,” Trepal added. “If you had a break in the skin, one of them could gain entry and set off an infection. And a skin infection of the foot could become a systemic infection, too.”
To deal with this disgusting possibility, Mack explained he’s found a rather easy solution. Just bring an extra pair of socks.  As he described, he typically walks through security, then on the other side, unpacks a fresh pair of socks and swaps those out for his dirty ones. Problem solved. And, though the TSA said in a 2003 study that your risk of contracting something while walking through security is incredibly small, Trepal said he agrees with Mack’s tactics.
“It just goes to good bodily hygiene, like washing your hands,” Trepal explained to The Points Guy. “Try to minimize barefoot contact with foreign surfaces, and try to wear socks[inside your shoes] if you want an extra level of precaution.”
Now, all you’ve got to worry about is those self check-in kiosks, which are riddled with germs. But that’s a story for a different day.

Mysteries of the Human Body - Why so Whimpy?

Picture

If you shaved a chimpanzee and took a photo of its body from the neck to the waist, "at first glance you wouldn't really notice that it isn't human," said Kevin Hunt, director of the Human Origins and Primate Evolution Lab at Indiana University. The two species' musculature is extremely similar, but somehow, pound-for-pound, chimps are between two and three times stronger than humans, Hunt told us. It's unclear why we're so much wimpier than our closest hominid relatives; perhaps our muscles' attachment points subtly differ, or our muscle fibers could be less dense.   Either way, the result is slightly humiliating. Once, in an African forest, Hunt watched an 85-pound female chimp snap branches off an aptly named ironwood tree with her fingertips. It took Hunt two hands and all the strength he could muster to snap an equally thick branch. [Chimps vs. Humans: How Are We Different?]

Zsa Zsa the English bulldog
World's Ugliest Dog

Picture
(UPI) -- The World's Ugliest Dog contest in California crowned a new champion: a 9-year-old English bulldog named Zsa Zsa.   Megan Brainard, Zsa Zsa's owner, said she drove the aesthetically-challenged canine more than 30 hours from their Minnesota home to compete in the annual event at the Sonoma-Marin County Fair in Petaluma.
Zsa Zsa impressed the judges with her crooked teeth and enormous, lolling tongue, which Brainard said children often shake as if it were an extra paw.
"I knew she was definitely up for winning," Brainard told NBC's Today show.
Brainard, who found Zsa Zsa on PetFinder.com after a rescue group saved her from a puppy mill, received a $1,500 prize.
"She is so beautiful in my eyes," Brainard told KABC-TV.

Book review:  "Only Child"
book by Rhiannon Navin   review by Lisa Farnan
A heartbreaking and emotional story of a school shooting narrated by a six year old boy.
As this novel begins, Zach is hiding in the closet of his first grade classroom with his teacher and classmates listening to the POP POP POP sounds of gunshots in their building. When the noise ends, nineteen are killed including Zach’s
brother.
His mother feels emotionally and physically unable to parent devoting all her energy on finding justice for her dead
son. His father struggles with many conflicting emotions and continues to go into the office. Zach is feeling alone and
experiencing emotions that are unfamiliar to him. He does not understand the actions of his parents or the adult conversations he overhears while sitting in the stairway. Then he stumbles upon a secret hideout and turns to coloring pages and reading his favorite series hoping to find the solution that will heal his family and members of his school community - his extended family. Through the messages in his books he plans an unsafe mission to bring both back together.
The reality of school shootings are an unfortunate occurrence in our world.  This novel explains the heartbreak and
loss realized by one family and the effects felt through the entire community.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 27

Truman orders U.S. forces to Korea  1950

On June 27, 1950, President Harry S. Truman announces that he is ordering U.S. air and naval forces to South Korea to aid the democratic nation in repulsing an invasion by communist North Korea. The United States was undertaking the major military operation, he explained, to enforce a United Nations resolution calling for an end to hostilities, and to stem the spread of communism in Asia. In addition to ordering U.S. forces to Korea, Truman also deployed the U.S. 7th Fleet to Formosa (Taiwan) to guard against invasion by communist China and ordered an acceleration of military aid to French forces fighting communist guerrillas in Vietnam.
At the Yalta Conference towards the end of World War II, the United States, the USSR, and Great Britain agreed to divide Korea into two separate occupation zones. The country was split along the 38th parallel, with Soviet forces occupying the northern zone and Americans stationed in the south. In 1947, the United States and Great Britain called for free elections throughout Korea, but the Soviets refused to comply. In May 1948 the Korean Democratic People’s Republic–a communist state–was proclaimed in North Korea. In August, the democratic Republic of Korea was established in South Korea. By 1949, both the United States and the USSR had withdrawn the majority of their troops from the Korean Peninsula.
At dawn on June 25, 1950 (June 24 in the United States and Europe), 90,000 communist troops of the North Korean People’s Army invaded South Korea across the 38th parallel, catching the Republic of Korea’s forces completely off guard and throwing them into a hasty southern retreat. On the afternoon of June 25, the U.N. Security Council met in an emergency session and approved a U.S. resolution calling for an “immediate cessation of hostilities” and the withdrawal of North Korean forces to the 38th parallel. At the time, the USSR was boycotting the Security Council over the U.N.’s refusal to admit the People’s Republic of China and so missed its chance to veto this and other crucial U.N. resolutions.

Clean Fill Environmental Hearing
Pen Argyl, PA – State Senator Mario Scavello will host an upcoming public hearing with the Senate Majority Policy Committee to discuss the Commonwealth’s clean fill and regulated fill standards.
The hearing will take place on Monday, July 9 at 10:00 a.m. at Wind Gap Middle School (1620 Teels Road, Wind Gap, PA). Members of the public are welcome to attend.
Due to its close proximity to New York and New Jersey, Pennsylvania’s northeast region receives a high volume of out-of-state fill material. In particular, clean fill is being disposed of in the Slate Belt region of Northampton County in abandoned slate quarries. Fill material contains various levels of allowed contaminants and is classified either as “clean” or, where higher levels of contaminants exist, “regulated.”
According to the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), clean fill includes soil, rock, stone, dredged material, used asphalt and brick, block or concrete from construction and demolition activities.
As dumping activities have increased in the region, so have concerns over the environmental impact to these sites and surrounding areas.
“Many residents and elected officials in my Senate District have raised concerns over the dumping of out-of-state fill material in our region,” said Senator Scavello. “I share the same concerns over the sheer volume of fill activity occurring in my district and its potential environmental impact, so I requested this hearing to fully evaluate the Commonwealth’s environmental standards and ensure our residents are protected.”
The hearing will review concerns and testimony from the PA DEP, local municipal leaders, area residents, business leaders and industry representatives. Individuals from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection are also invited.
For further information, please visit www.senatorscavello.com or contact the Senator’s district office at 570-620-4326
