Harrisburg, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and its regional air quality partnerships have forecast a Code Orange Air Quality Action Day for ozone on June 16-18, 2018 for the the Lehigh Valley (Berks, Lehigh, and Northampton counties). A strong ridge of high pressure, a mostly sunny sky, temperatures in the lower to middle 90s Fahrenheit, and west to southwesterly transport will be highly favorable for ozone formation, starting across western Pennsylvania Saturday, and in all locations Sunday into the day Monday. This will result in code ORANGE conditions to a widespread area of Pennsylvania Sunday into Monday. An approaching cold front will bring a better chance for afternoon and evening thunderstorms Tuesday, reducing the risk for elevated ozone. On air quality action days, young children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems, such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis, are especially vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit outdoor activities. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s standardized air quality index uses colors to report daily air quality. Green signifies good; yellow means moderate; orange represents unhealthy pollution levels for sensitive people; and red warns of unhealthy pollution levels for all. To help keep the air healthy, residents and business are encouraged to voluntarily restrict certain pollution-producing activities by: • Refueling cars and trucks after dusk • Setting air conditioner thermostats to a higher temperature • Carpooling or using public transportation; and • Combining errands to reduce trips. These forecasts are provided in conjunction with the Southwestern PA Air Quality Partnership, Inc, the Susquehanna Valley Air Quality Partnership and the Lehigh Valley-Berks Air Quality Partnership. Advice for Growing Tomatoes Why Grow Tomatoes? That's an easy question when you consider how tasty, nutritious and healthful they are. And growing tomatoes is easy. Tomatoes have evolved over thousands of years to survive with no care at all. Of course, the fruit will be more plentiful and look more appealing if you follow this advice.
The easiest way to decide what kind to grow is to determine how you will use your tomatoes. Will you use your tomatoes:• In sauces and soups? Try Roma and other oblong, thick-walled tomatoes that can stand up to cooking.• On sandwiches and burgers? Slicing tomatoes are perfect for that.• For salads and eating out of hand? Cherry tomatoes and grape tomatoes both fill the bill. Many avid gardeners grow a range of tomatoes so they have options in the kitchen. Growing tomatoes is really about growing conditions—and making sure those growing conditions are to the tomato plant's liking. That means a rich, well-drained soil amended with compost. It also means lots of sunlight: at least 6 hours a day, preferably more. Note: Tomato plants can burn out in the South, so consider a shade screen during the hottest part of the summer. It also means lots of sunlight: at least 6 hours a day, preferably more. Note: Tomato plants can burn out in the South, so consider a shade screen during the hottest part of the summer. Tomatoes do a lot of growing over the summer and need a steady supply of water to be at their most productive. Ideally, plants should be watered at their base, keeping foliage dry and disease free. Overhead watering should be done in the early morning so the foliage can dry before nightfall. A soaker hose or drip irrigation are two efficient ways of delivering water to the roots without a lot of evaporation. If you take a little care and follow these tips when growing tomatoes, you should have a bumper crop of tomatoes to harvest. Enjoy them—they're good for you! And share them with friends, family and homeless shelters. When frost approaches, extend the season by covering plants at night with sheets, removing them in the morning. And you can also harvest unripe tomatoes to make the famous fried green tomatoes (not as healthy as a fresh tomato, but consider them a late-season indulgence). News Shorts.........

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 16
First roller coaster in America opens 1884
On this day in 1884, the first roller coaster in America opens at Coney Island, in Brooklyn, New York. Known as a switchback railway, it was the brainchild of LaMarcus Thompson, traveled approximately six miles per hour and cost a nickel to ride. The new entertainment was an instant success and by the turn of the century there were hundreds of roller coasters around the country.
Coney Island, a name believed to have come from the Dutch Konijn Eilandt, or Rabbit Island, is a tract of land along the Atlantic Ocean discovered by explorer Henry Hudson in 1609. The first hotel opened at Coney Island in 1829 and by the post-Civil War years, the area was an established resort with theaters, restaurants and a race track. Between 1897 and 1904, three amusement parks sprang up at Coney Island–Dreamland, Luna Park and Steeplechase. By the 1920s, Coney Island was reachable by subway and summer crowds of a million people a day flocked there for rides, games, sideshows, the beach and the two-and-a-half-mile boardwalk, completed in 1923.
The hot dog is said to have been invented at Coney Island in 1867 by Charles Feltman. In 1916, a nickel hot dog stand called Nathan’s was opened by a former Feltman employee and went on to become a Coney Island institution and international franchise. Today, Nathan’s is famous not only for its hot dogs but its hot dog-eating contest, held each Fourth of July in Coney Island. In 2006, Takeru Kobayashi set a new record when he ate 53.75 hot dogs with buns in 12 minutes.
