Smartphone tips for Hot Weather
Summer is finally here and who to accompany you on all of your outdoor adventures than your smartphone?
But sadly our trusty tech companions are not built for baking in the sun. Anyone who has left their phone out in the sun has seen the infamous “Your phone needs to cool down” message at one time or another. Smartphones should not be left in direct sunlight or extreme heat for too long – this includes leaving your phone in a hot car, using it to blast tunes while you frolic on the beach, or even bringing it along for your outdoor workout (especially if its touching your sweaty body). Right away you will notice that the hotter your phone gets, the faster the battery dies. But heat exposure can damage your phone’s battery permanently. At an average temperature of 0-degrees Celsius a lithium-ion battery should lose about six per cent of its maximum capacity per year. That number jumps to 20 per cent at an average temperature of 25-degrees Celsius. Don’t leave your phone in direct sunlight if you need it while outside. Something as simple as leaving it in the shade will help prevent overheating. If it’s especially hot outside, you may also want to avoid keeping your phone in your pocket. If you do get an overheating warning on your phone, it’s best to get it out of the heat or sun as soon as possible to let it cool down. Most phones will become unusable until they cool down. However, it’s not recommended you put your phone in the freezer to speed up the process. Your phone’s battery heats up faster the more apps and features you have running. Try turning off any battery-consuming features (like BlueTooth, or Wi-Fi) if you don’t need them, and shut down apps that you aren’t using while outside for better battery performance. However, if you notice your phone is overheating too often, it might be best to get the battery tested by a professional. Some smartphones have reputations for overheating while charging – this is usually a sign of a battery issue. News Shorts.........

Joe Emrick sits, will hold a public hearing on CWD this Thursday, June 14, at 10 a.m. at the state Capitol.
Officials from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture and Pennsylvania Game Commission will provide an update on efforts to protect our deer and elk population, as well as offer a status report on the progression of the disease.

The Miranda rights are established 1966
On this day in 1966, the Supreme Court hands down its decision in Miranda v. Arizona, establishing the principle that all criminal suspects must be advised of their rights before interrogation. Now considered standard police procedure, “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford one, one will be appointed to you,” has been heard so many times in television and film dramas that it has become almost cliche.
The roots of the Miranda decision go back to March 2, 1963, when an 18-year-old Phoenix woman told police that she had been abducted, driven to the desert and raped. Detectives questioning her story gave her a polygraph test, but the results were inconclusive. However, tracking the license plate number of a car that resembled that of her attacker’s brought police to Ernesto Miranda, who had a prior record as a peeping tom. Although the victim did not identify Miranda in a line-up, he was brought into police custody and interrogated. What happened next is disputed, but officers left the interrogation with a confession that Miranda later recanted, unaware that he didn’t have to say anything at all.
The confession was extremely brief and differed in certain respects from the victim’s account of the crime. However, Miranda’s appointed defense attorney (who was paid a grand total of $100) didn’t call any witnesses at the ensuing trial, and Miranda was convicted. While Miranda was in Arizona state prison, the American Civil Liberties Union took up his appeal, claiming that the confession was false and coerced.

First United Methodist Church in Bangor is offering kids entering kindergarten thru 5th grades one awesome time. “We want to give kids the chance to learn more about sports, discover character-building concepts, learn about God’s love, and have a whole lot of fun,” says Pastor Chris Hardy.
At MEGA Sports Camp, kids can participate in basketball and kickball (or sports basics for the little ones). It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.
Between sports sessions, coaches lead in songs and help kids experience inspiring sports and Bible stories to help character-building themes take hold in kids’ hearts. And most importantly, kids will discover God’s great love for them.

First United Methodist Church in Bangor is offering kids entering kindergarten thru 5th grades one awesome time. “We want to give kids the chance to learn more about sports, discover character-building concepts, learn about God’s love, and have a whole lot of fun,” says Pastor Chris Hardy.
At MEGA Sports Camp, kids can participate in basketball and kickball (or sports basics for the little ones). It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.
Between sports sessions, coaches lead in songs and help kids experience inspiring sports and Bible stories to help character-building themes take hold in kids’ hearts. And most importantly, kids will discover God’s great love for them.

Quarry Hoist
Demonstration for the Slate Belt Heritage Center Bangor Quarry Hoist will be held Thursday, July 12 at 7 PM - 8 PM at 1st Street and Market Street, Bangor, Pennsylvania 18013
The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration. Although work on the hoist and pavilion is still underway, progress is so advanced that we can look forward to this event next summer.

Ride for Relief
Ride for Relief is a motorcycle charity run organized by Pastor Chris and members of the First United Methodist Church that will take place on Saturday, July 14th. The ride will be a 50+ mile tour of the scenic Slate Belt region, beginning and ending at the First United Methodist Church. The ride is raising money for the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), and all funds will be allocated for United States disaster relief.
Registration completed prior to June 15th will be discounted at a rate of $25 per rider and $15 per passenger. Registrations after June 15th will be $30 per rider and $20 per passenger. Every registration includes the ride, food, and a T-shirt.

A mobile paper shredding event is scheduled for September 15 from 9 am to 12 pm at Weona Park in Pen Argyl. This event is for Northampton County Residents only. No business or commercial shredding will be allowed. Accepted items are financial statements, medical records, investment transactions, employee payvstubs, Social Security or credit card numbers, pre-approved credit card applications, legal documents, tax forms, accounting files, cancelled checks, credit reward or bonus cards. No ring binders, plastic sheet protectors or coverings and no metal strips. DO NOT BRING junk mail, greeting cards, postcards, magazines, fliers, etc. These go in a recycling bin.

The ride will be full Police escorted and end with a party at Evergreen Lakes. Your donation of $20 per person will include an event t-shirt, after party including food, beverages and live band. All active and retired Law Enforcement are free with proper identification. There will also be a live K-9 demonstration and many other surprises. Save the date and support a great cause with a great ride event.

Celtic Cultural Alliance Announces Songwriting Competition
Celtic Cultural Alliance will be hosting a songwriting competition, sponsored by C.F. Martin & Co. and Sellersville Theatre, on Saturday, September 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at the Celtic Heritage Hollow Stage during the 31st Celtic Classic Highland Games and Festival. The contest is open to all amateur songwriters.
Original songs must have lyrics and be performed in person on the guitar. Songs will be judged on lyrics, melody and performance by professional musicians Graham Wright of the Glengarry Bhoys, Gerry Timlin and Seamus Kennedy. The contestant with the highest score will be awarded one Martin Guitar DRSG with case and strings along with the opportunity to audition as the opening act for a performance at the Sellersville Theatre.
Contestants must send in a registration with the lyrics, and it must be postmarked by September 1, 2018. The contest is limited to the first 15 applicants with a correct registration. For more information and a registration form, please visit http://www.celticfest.org/celtic_song_writing_contest.
