The Road not Taken – by Robert Frost
Two roads diverged in a yellow wood, And sorry I could not travel both And be one traveler, long I stood And looked down one as far as I could To where it bent in the undergrowth; Then took the other, as just as fair, And having perhaps the better claim Because it was grassy and wanted wear, Though as for that the passing there Had worn them really about the same, And both that morning equally lay In leaves no step had trodden black. Oh, I kept the first for another day! Yet knowing how way leads on to way I doubted if I should ever come back. I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence: Two roads diverged in a wood, and I, I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference. Choices – we all make choices! During your years of education here at this school You have learned how to make choices. You did not choose this school Or these fine teachers who have instructed you But you did choose the classes you have taken, You chose to study and get good grades, or not. You chose your sport, or your musical instrument. You chose your theatrical production or your art class. You chose to come to school, or not. You chose your friends, girlfriend or boyfriend. You chose your social engagements. All these choices have consequences, and hopefully, your choices will enhance your future. The point of mentioning these choices is to put Your selections into the larger picture. Because, you see, your choices have been of the lesser consequence types. Much of what you have experienced so far in your life Has been given to you, structured for you, Programmed for you. In short, most of your major life choices have been made for you. You did not choose to be born. You did not choose your parents or your siblings. You did not choose the country in which you live. You were born into this privileged country, A country where, as Paul Simon writes and sings, For the most part you have: “Never been lonely Never been lied to Never had to scuffle in fear Nothing denied to Born at the instant The church bells chime And the whole world whispering Born at the right time.” |
You were born into a privileged country,
not the country where there are: “Too many people on the bus from the airport Too many holes in the crust of the earth The planet groans Every time it registers another birth.” That is not the country where you were born, Nevertheless, you are here. You were born at the right time. You did not choose the community or circle of people that Have become your world. You did not choose the social, economic, political or religious environment into which you were born. In truth, it is an accident that you were born here In this place, in this privileged country and at this time. In short, the larger choices of your life Up to this point have not been your choices Nevertheless, you are here. You were born at the right time. But now you are at a crossroads, A place where two roads diverge. And you must choose who you will be going forward. It is the biggest choice you will ever make. I am not talking about your future education. I am not talking about the vocation you are pursing Or the military you might join. I am talking about the major life choice of Who you will become, How you will view and understand others and How will you find meaning and purpose in your life. It is the most basic and fundamental choice of your entire life. It is also the most significant religious and spiritual decision You will ever make. It will determine how you view life and how the life around you views and understands you. Your society, your peers, your advisors, your social milieu Has a built-in path for you. It is the path called the American Dream. It is the path of success, where you achieve great things Relative to your strengths and talents – Perhaps an advanced degree, a profession of respect and power, A position of financial means and material wealth. It is the road that your society, your culture, Your surroundings will want you to choose Because they want you to be competitive. They want you to win because they want to win as well. The American Dream equates happiness with material And vocational well-being. But notice what the American dream does not do. It does not equate happiness with meaning and purpose. It can, but it usually doesn’t. READ FULL TEXT - CLICK HERE |

Trooper Stops Man Who Delivered Him
We’re not sure what the odds are of this happening—maybe they’re close to the odds of a hole-in-one, winning the lottery, or being struck by lightning—but it happened.
On Friday, June 1, Trooper Michael Patterson stopped Matthew Bailly for a minor motor vehicle violation in Kingwood Township. During the initial conversation, Mr. Bailly told Trooper Patterson that he was a retired Piscataway police officer. Trooper Patterson, being a Piscataway native, told Mr. Bailly that he is from the same town. Now here’s where things get interesting…
Mr. Bailly asked Trooper Patterson where he used to live. When Trooper Patterson told him that he grew up on Poe Place, Mr. Bailly said that he remembered that street, because he helped deliver a baby there 27 years ago when he was a rookie cop. He was even able to describe the color, style of house, and the baby’s name, Michael. Trooper Patterson extended his hand and replied, “My name is Michael Patterson, sir. Thank you for delivering me.”
Whatever the odds were, it happened. Trooper Michael Patterson stopped the police officer who delivered him 27 years ago in Piscataway. Mr. Bailly had four years on the job when he responded to a home on Poe Place in Piscataway. The date was October 5, 1991. Trooper Patterson’s mother, Karen Patterson, was out shopping when she went into labor. She barely made it home. Bobby Patterson, Trooper Patterson’s father, rushed outside, picked up his wife, and carried her inside the house. He then called the doctor who talked Officer Bailly through the birth.
Needless to say, Trooper Patterson, Matthew Bailly, and both of their families were ecstatic about the reunion.
So, Trooper Patterson and his mother visited Mr. Bailly and his wife at their home where they took these photos! They all felt this story was so uplifting, it needed to be shared, and we agree! After all, as a police officer, you don’t always get a chance to have a moment like this with people you once helped in your career!

Improve Your Mental Health
Set goals, but don't take failure personally
Most people are at least a little bit of a perfectionist in some area of life. Aiming high can be the first step to success, but studies have found that high levels of perfectionism are linked to poor health and increase the risk of death. Perfectionism is also linked to postpartum depression.
The problem is that perfectionism has two facets: Perfectionists tend to set high goals for themselves, but they also tend to worry about it if they fail to reach extreme levels of performance. The high goals are not the problem as much as the so-called "perfectionist concerns," or feelings of failure and worthlessness that come with falling short of reaching them, which can wreak havoc on mental health.
The trick to getting around this perfectionism trap might be to set goals without taking failure personally, said Andrew Hill, a sports psychologist at York St. John University in England.
One strategy, Hill told Live Science in August 2015, is for perfectionists to set small, manageable goals for themselves rather than one big goal. That way, failure is less likely, and so is the self-recrimination that can keep a perfectionist down. In other words, perfectionists should force themselves to think about achieving success in degrees, rather than in all-or-nothing terms.

Paternity leave for new pets
(UPI) -- A Norwegian pet supply company is giving employees paid time off to bond with their new pets. Musti Group, described as the largest pet supply company in the Nordic countries w ith more than 1,500 employees, began offering "pawternity leave" to employees, which consists of three paid days off when they acquire a new puppy or kitten. Musti Group CEO David Rönnberg says the first few days a puppy is in a new home are vital to getting used to its new owner and environment
"Depending on the needs of each pet, the first days spent together can be rather intense, and sleepless nights are more than familiar to recent pet parents," Rönnberg said in a statement. "A baby animal requires constant attention and unconditional love. Paying attention to a pet's needs and spending time with them supports their learning, builds trust and helps prevent behavioral disorders in the future."
Henri Mäkinen, the marketing director of Musti Group, said other companies should offer their employees pawternity leave because it's good for the pet's well-being. "Puppy socialization and training can't happen during evenings or weekends alone. A puppy might feel both insecure and lost in their new home, without the presence of their mother and siblings," Mäkinen said. "If a pet is left alone for too long, they will find all sorts of things to do -- not all of them necessarily pleasant to the owner."

THIS DAY IN HISTORY - June 11
John Wayne dies 1979
On this day in 1979, John Wayne, an iconic American film actor famous for starring in countless westerns, dies at age 72 after battling cancer for more than a decade.
The actor was born Marion Morrison on May 26, 1907, in Winterset, Iowa, and moved as a child to Glendale, California. A football star at Glendale High School, he attended the University of Southern California on a scholarship but dropped out after two years. After finding work as a movie studio laborer, Wayne befriended director John Ford, then a rising talent. His first acting jobs were bit parts in which he was credited as Duke Morrison, a childhood nickname derived from the name of his beloved pet dog.
Wayne’s first starring role came in 1930 with The Big Trail, a film directed by his college buddy Raoul Walsh. It was during this time that Marion Morrison became “John Wayne,” when director Walsh didn’t think Marion was a good name for an actor playing a tough western hero. Despite the lead actor’s new name, however, the movie flopped. Throughout the 1930s, Wayne made dozens of mediocre westerns, sometimes churning out two movies a week. In them, he played various rough-and-tumble characters and occasionally appeared as “Singing Sandy,” a musical cowpoke a la Roy Rogers.

MEGA Sports Camp
Hey parents! Ready to drop a ton of fun right into your child’s summer? Then MEGA Sports Camp is right hosted by First United Methodist Church of Bangor is for you. The camp will be held Jun 18 - Jun 22 at 6:00pm at the Pennico Park in South Bangor.
First United Methodist Church in Bangor is offering kids entering kindergarten thru 5th grades one awesome time. “We want to give kids the chance to learn more about sports, discover character-building concepts, learn about God’s love, and have a whole lot of fun,” says Pastor Chris Hardy.
At MEGA Sports Camp, kids can participate in basketball and kickball (or sports basics for the little ones). It doesn’t matter if they’ve played all their life or just started yesterday, our camp helps improve their skills. All sorts of drills and practice games will get kids focused on the fundamentals that make athletes great. Plus, we create a positive and encouraging environment that pumps up their confidence and self-esteem.
Between sports sessions, coaches lead in songs and help kids experience inspiring sports and Bible stories to help character-building themes take hold in kids’ hearts. And most importantly, kids will discover God’s great love for them.
So come on over to Pennico Park in Bangor, hosted by First United Methodist Church. It starts on Monday, June 18th and lasts through Friday, June 22nd, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm each evening. For more information and registration check out our website at www.firstumcbangor.com.
