(BPT) - It’s natural to pack all you can into those few precious summer months, but inevitably they’re gone before you know it. As summer vacations, sleepovers and outdoor grilling come to a close, it's time to start thinking about going back to school.
You may be working to pay off summer vacation bills when you realize you need to budget and pay for your child’s school supplies, clothing and other related school expenses. In a recent survey conducted by Coinstar, about half of U.S. parents with kids between ages five and 18 believe school expenses are increasing. Of those surveyed, 57 percent will create a back-to-school budget. To ease rising school costs, here are five budgeting tips that will help you get more for your back-to-school dollar:

Book Review...... The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America book by Timothy Egan review by Katy Albanese We have all visited one or more of our country’s national parks. We have enjoyed the beauty and majesty of the Grand Canyon, the rock formations of Arches, the trees of Shenandoah. Have you ever thought about the steps taken many years ago to preserve these special lands? Author Timothy Egan takes the reader on a journey to the beginning of the conservation movement, to the story of a forest fire that is actually a story within a much larger one. That tale is of President Teddy Roosevelt and his chief forester Gifford Pinchot, their conflict with the U.S. Congress and the struggle to conserve this country’s forests and rivers and beaches and irreplacable natural treasures. The forestry service and job of forest ranger was in its infancy when, on August 20, 1910, the biggest forest fire in the history of the United States occurred. It was the hurricane Katrina of its day. Extreme drought and a horrific electrical storm on July 26 worked together to create thousands of small fires in the forests of eastern Washington, the panhandle of Idaho and western Montana. Woefully understaffed forest rangers fought the fires for three weeks, trying to douse them and save the woods from destruction. On August 20, an extreme wind whipped the flames into a frenzy; entire towns were leveled along with thousands of acres of forests. Smoke and ash was seen as far south as Denver, as far east as Chicago and as far west as the Pacific Ocean. At last, Congress realized the need for a forestry department and funding to preserve and protect what could not be replaced. This book contains heartbreaking stories of those who lost their lives fighting the fires as well as heartwarming tales of those who survived. It gives new understanding and appreciation to those who worked so hard to conserve the beauty of America. Look for this book in the non-fiction room at 973.9 Ega. The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will host a Celtic song writing class to encourage creative musicians interested in developing their musical skills. Executive Director, Jayne Ann Recker states that the idea for the class came from the Celtic Song Writing Contest held at the Celtic Classic. The contest is for ameatur musicians and many inquire where they can find more instruction. The partnership with instructor Jim Carolan was the perfect fit. As part of the continued educational programming, CCA is presenting a Crash Course in Celtic Songwriting by Jim Carolan of Big Daddy Songs on Thursday, July 20, 2017. This workshop is to encourage the continued tradition of Celtic tunes and to help those interested in entering the Celtic songwriting contest at Celtic Classic in September. Jim Carolan, a Top 5 Billboard Hit Songwriter and International Award winning professional songwriter, will be the instructor from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Life in Christ Church, 51 E. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - July 20Armstrong walks on moon - 1969 At 10:56 p.m. EDT, American astronaut Neil Armstrong, 240,000 miles from Earth, speaks these words to more than a billion people listening at home: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” Stepping off the lunar landing module Eagle, Armstrong became the first human to walk on the surface of the moon. The American effort to send astronauts to the moon has its origins in a famous appeal President John F. Kennedy made to a special joint session of Congress on May 25, 1961: “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.” At the time, the United States was still trailing the Soviet Union in space developments, and Cold War-era America welcomed Kennedy’s bold proposal. In 1966, after five years of work by an international team of scientists and engineers, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) conducted the first unmanned Apollo mission, testing the structural integrity of the proposed launch vehicle and spacecraft combination. Then, on January 27, 1967, tragedy struck at Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida, when a fire broke out during a manned launch-pad test of the Apollo spacecraft and Saturn rocket. Three astronauts were killed in the fire. Despite the setback, NASA and its thousands of employees forged ahead, and in October 1968, Apollo 7, the first manned Apollo mission, orbited Earth and successfully tested many of the sophisticated systems needed to conduct a moon journey and landing. In December of the same year, Apollo 8 took three astronauts to the dark side of the moon and back, and in March 1969 Apollo 9 tested the lunar module for the first time while in Earth orbit. Then in May, the three astronauts of Apollo 10 took the first complete Apollo spacecraft around the moon in a dry run for the scheduled July landing mission. At 9:32 a.m. on July 16, with the world watching, Apollo 11 took off from Kennedy Space Center with astronauts Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin Jr., and Michael Collins aboard. Armstrong, a 38-year-old civilian research pilot, was the commander of the mission. After traveling 240,000 miles in 76 hours, Apollo 11 entered into a lunar orbit on July 19. The next day, at 1:46 p.m., the lunar module Eagle, manned by Armstrong and Aldrin, separated from the command module, where Collins remained. Two hours later, the Eagle began its descent to the lunar surface, and at 4:18 p.m. the craft touched down on the southwestern edge of the Sea of Tranquility. Armstrong immediately radioed to Mission Control in Houston, Texas, a famous message: “The Eagle has landed.” At 10:39 p.m., five hours ahead of the original schedule, Armstrong opened the hatch of the lunar module. As he made his way down the lunar module’s ladder, a television camera attached to the craft recorded his progress and beamed the signal back to Earth, where hundreds of millions watched in great anticipation. At 10:56 p.m., Armstrong spoke his famous quote, which he later contended was slightly garbled by his microphone and meant to be “that’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” He then planted his left foot on the gray, powdery surface, took a cautious step forward, and humanity had walked on the moon. “Buzz” Aldrin joined him on the moon’s surface at 11:11 p.m., and together they took photographs of the terrain, planted a U.S. flag, ran a few simple scientific tests, and spoke with President Richard M. Nixon via Houston. By 1:11 a.m. on July 21, both astronauts were back in the lunar module and the hatch was closed. The two men slept that night on the surface of the moon, and at 1:54 p.m. the Eagle began its ascent back to the command module. Among the items left on the surface of the moon was a plaque that read: “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot on the moon–July 1969 A.D–We came in peace for all mankind.” At 5:35 p.m., Armstrong and Aldrin successfully docked and rejoined Collins, and at 12:56 a.m. on July 22 Apollo 11began its journey home, safely splashing down in the Pacific Ocean at 12:51 p.m. on July 24. There would be five more successful lunar landing missions, and one unplanned lunar swing-by, Apollo 13. The last men to walk on the moon, astronauts Eugene Cernan and Harrison Schmitt of the Apollo 17 mission, left the lunar surface on December 14, 1972. The Apollo program was a costly and labor intensive endeavor, involving an estimated 400,000 engineers, technicians, and scientists, and costing $24 billion (close to $100 billion in today’s dollars). Tasty Tuesdays at Trinity Lutheran Church Trinity Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Slatebelt Community this summer. Tasty Tuesdays will begin on June 13 and will run until August 8th. Every Tuesday the bag lunch will be available between 11am- 1pm and will contain a sandwich, fresh fruit/vegetable, chips, healthy snack bar, and a drink. Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017. The bus will leave at 8:00 AM from Weiss Market, Route 512 in Bangor, and will return at 5:00 PM. Cost per individual is $95.00 which includes bus ticket and admission ticket into the museum. This is the only museum that tells the entire Civil War story. Local Civil War expert and the National Civil War Museum educator Dane DiFebo will host a special presentation for the tour. See exhibits, visit with re-enactors on the museum grounds, attend Hari Jones program on the United State Colored Troops in the South from 1865-1870 and much more. Thank you for your continued support of the project. 1885 Club Accepting Nominations The Bangor Area High School Alumni Association is looking for nominations for induction into the 2017 "1885 Club Hall of Fame." In 1998, the members of the Bangor Area High School Alumni Association began to search for a way to honor graduates who have distinguished themselves through public service, scholarship, and recognition in their chosen fields of work.
Discussions naturally led to creating a Hall of Fame for such individuals. Concerned about possible confusion with the Athletic Hall of Fame, however, the committee began to seek ways to create a different type of recognition with its own unique distinction. From this collaboration, "The 1885 Club" was born. Named in honor of the first year in which a class of students graduated from Bangor High School, this exclusive club honors distinguished alumni and holds these individuals as outstanding examples for others to follow. Through the creation of "The 1885 Club" the Alumni Association underscores and upholds the fact that graduates from Bangor Area High School have been making tremendous contributions to mankind for more than 130 years. We reserve a special category for educators and administrators who have served the Bangor Area School District over its long history. Crash Course in Celtic Song Writing Class
The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will host a Celtic song writing class to encourage creative musicians interested in developing their musical skills. Executive Director, Jayne Ann Recker states that the idea for the class came from the Celtic Song Writing Contest held at the Celtic Classic. The contest is for ameatur musicians and many inquire where they can find more instruction. The partnership with instructor Jim Carolan was the perfect fit. As part of the continued educational programming, CCA is presenting a Crash Course in Celtic Songwriting by Jim Carolan of Big Daddy Songs on Thursday, July 20, 2017. This workshop is to encourage the continued tradition of Celtic tunes and to help those interested in entering the Celtic songwriting contest at Celtic Classic in September. BMCL Library Night at Wendy's The Blue Mountain Community Library will be holding a “Library Night at Wendy’s” Fundraiser on Wednesday, August 2, 2017 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Quiet Valley’s Heritage Craft Day Stroudsburg (PA) – Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will feature the 11th annual Heritage Craft Day on Saturday, August 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Demonstrators will show traditional heritage craft skills of the 1800s throughout the day. There will be hands-on opportunities for visitors who wish to try out some of these crafts for themselves. There is a special children’s make and take craft area. Demonstrations such as spinning, weaving, wheat weaving, bobbin lace, horn work, pottery and blacksmithing will take place. The purpose of Heritage Craft Day is to provide a greater awareness of these historic folk crafts that were essential to everyday living in previous generations. This is a wonderful chance for individuals, families and children to explore the exciting world of traditional crafts. Members of the Pocono Gourd Society and the Pocono Embroiderers Guild will be in attendance. The crafters are under tents in case of rain. The schedule is subject to change. A presentation on fiber arts and natural fibers will take place during the day. Heritage Craft Day, a part of Quiet Valley’s summer “Art from the Heart” series, is supported by a Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Project Stream grant. Heritage Craft Day is included in the regular admission price of $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 3 – 12 and children two and under are free. Farm tours are available throughout the day on Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The bake oven will be in operation. There will also be wagon rides for a small fee, weather permitting. The Blue Mt. Community Library will offer a new program this summer for children. The library will partner with Waste Management for NATURE ADVENTURE! Children entering Kindergarten through 3rd Grade are encouraged to attend this program for Storytime and outdoor activities and should dress to explore! The 3 programs will be held at 10:00 am at the WM Environmental Center, 891 Grand Central Road, Pen Argyl July 12 (Landfill Trucks and More!) and August 9 (Bluebirds and Tree Swallows). The BMCL announces a special summer reading program called HIGH FIVE YOUR READING DRIVE! The program runs June 12 through August 12. Children entering Kindergarten through 8th Grade are encouraged to read at least 5 Library books and keep a log of their titles to earn one free book of their choosing from the Book Nook. The reading logs and information will be available at the front desk. Children 18 and under who do not have a library membership can open one, accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The library is now automated and new library cards will be issued to replace old cards and you MUST have a PA driver’s license or ID with you to open a membership. August 12Columcille’s Overnight Men's Retreat
Please join for an overnight men's retreat August 12-13 for an opportunity to connect to yourself and the land of Columcille Megalith Park in Bangor, PA. The intention for the retreat is for us to examine and deepen our relationship with the land and our own spiritual path. We will discuss personal accountability and the different ways we as men can bring balance by walking our soul's path in today’s world. They will be exploring this work through various shamanic rituals and ceremonies. One of the events that will continue throughout the retreat will be tending the sacred fire. As Firekeepers, each participant will have the opportunity to take a turn tending the fire in a sacred way with scheduled shifts throughout the retreat. This time will also allow us to honor the oral tradition of storytelling around the fire. It is a rare opportunity to camp on the land for this retreat which is normally not allowed. You are welcome to make other arrangements for sleeping if you do not wish to camp. All of the money collected will be donated to Collumcille Park. We are asking for a donation with a sliding scale of $175 to $125. We understand the need to be flexible with the rate. We also need to get a very accurate head count. We are asking for you to pay with paypal directly through the park website. Join the Slate Belt Heritage Center for their bus trip to the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA, on Saturday, September 16, 2017.
