Curious Pet Behavior.......Why dogs shouldn't eat chocolate![]() It's best to keep that chocolate bar out of Fido's reach. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine — stimulants that are dangerous to dogs, Greg Nelson, senior vice president of Central Veterinary Associates in Valley Stream, New York, told Live Science in 2011.
After a dog eats chocolate, it might begin to drool excessively, vomit and have diarrhea. These are signs that the chocolate is toxic to the dog, Nelson said. Dogs can also experience an increased heart rate and act restless, nervous or excited because of the caffeine, he said. In addition, an irregular heart rate can cause poor circulation, which can lead to a drop in body temperature. If the dog has an extreme reaction, it could have lethargy, muscle spasms and/or seizures; go into a coma; or even die, Nelson said. If your dog has ingested chocolate, call your veterinarian for advice. You should also call your vet if your dog eats a grape or raisin, as these can cause kidney failure in certain breeds. By Laura Geggel and Jeanna Bryner, Live Science Why do cats bury their poop?![]() Why do domesticated cats bury their poop, spraying litter across the floor as they finish the deed?
Scientists suggest this poop-burying practice is tied to submission and precautionary measures. In the wild, predators with sensitive noses can likely easily pick up the smell of cats' urine and feces, according to Animal Planet. So, smaller and weaker cats that are more submissive may bury their poop to keep from riling up more dominant animals, Animal Planet said. In contrast, big, dominant cats in the wild, such as lions and tigers, sometimes mark their territory with excrement but do not bury it, according to Mental Floss. Some may even bury their poop because they see themselves as subordinate to their human owners, zoologist and ethologist Desmond Morris wrote in his book "Catlore."Crown Publishers, 1988). Allentown, Pa - What substance covers 71% of the earth? What vital substance is needed by every cell in all living things? What valuable resource is abused, wasted and taken for granted every day? If you answered water, you’re right. We can’t live without it. But fresh water is NOT an unlimited resource. Of all the water on the earth only 2.5% is fresh water. Of that, only about 0.3 % is usable by humans. As population increases and urbanization creeps out ever farther into rural areas, the need for water protection grows. Lehigh Valley residents that want to learn more about the environment and get involved in local efforts to protect water can look to the Penn State Extension Master Watershed Steward Program. No previous experience is necessary – just a desire to give back. This program brings together university educators from varied disciplines, environmental professionals and local conservation agencies to deliver 40 hours of training to a select group of recruits who in turn volunteer to help protect the Lehigh Valley’s most important valuable resource, water. Lessons in topics such as water quality, stream health and restoration, recreational use, groundwater and geology equip the trainees for many projects that benefit the community. Last year 58 volunteers spent nearly 1500 hours teaching students about stream ecology, planting riparian buffers to filter run-off, installing rain gardens, helping municipalities meet state mandated storm water runoff requirements and delivering educational public workshops for homeowners on rain barrels, pollinator gardens and storm water management. The program launched in the Lehigh Valley in 2013 and due to its success, there are now Master Watershed Steward programs in eleven Pennsylvania Counties, with over 200 volunteers. Applications are now being accepted for 2018 Lehigh and Northampton training class. We are looking for enthusiastic people who want to preserve and improve the quality of life we enjoy in the Lehigh Valley. The 2018 Master Watershed Steward training program starts Wednesday, March 7 and continues on subsequent Wednesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. through mid-June. The course also includes three hands-on Saturday field trips. Classes will be held at partnering environmental organizations throughout the Lehigh Valley. The fee for the program is $100, which helps offset the costs for program materials and professional guest speakers. Scholarships are available for those with financial hardships. Three information sessions will be offered. One will be held on Wednesday, January 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Lehigh County Agricultural Center. The second will be held at the Northampton County Extension Office at the Greystone Building on Thursday January 18 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. The third will be held on Wednesday, January 24 at Illick's Mill in Bethlehem from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Please consider becoming a part of the Master Watershed Steward Program. Social events such as the annual canoe trip and seasonal potlucks offer the chance to form new friendships and network with conservationists from all walks of life in the Valley. The 2018 Master Watershed Steward Program is a collaborative effort of Penn State Extension, the Watershed Coalition of the Lehigh Valley, Northampton County Conservation District, Appalachian Mountain Club, the Wildlands Conservancy and the Lehigh Gap Nature Center. For more information about the Master Watershed Steward Program or to request an application for the 2018 training program, contact Erin Frederick by phone at 610-391-9840 or by email at elf145@psu.edu. Bingo Law Update
As a way to help nonprofit organizations better raise funds for community needs, Act 66 of 2017 updates the state’s antiquated Bingo Law, which was enacted in 1981. The new law increases prize limits from $250 to $500 for any one game of bingo; from $2,000 to $4,000 for jackpot games; and from $4,000 to $8,000 for the total amount of prizes awarded in a calendar day. It also gives community organizations the freedom to advertise the dollar value of cash prizes. Organizations will be permitted to advertise bingo games on the internet and through social media. Additionally, the law removes restrictions on the number of days a licensed association may conduct bingo games, permits pre-draw bingo and allows for guest callers and for new members of an organization to assist with bingo. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - January 9Columbus mistakes manatees for mermaids 1493 On this day in 1493, Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, sailing near the Dominican Republic, sees three “mermaids”–in reality manatees–and describes them as “not half as beautiful as they are painted.” Six months earlier, Columbus (1451-1506) set off from Spain across the Atlantic Ocean with the Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria, hoping to find a western trade route to Asia. Instead, his voyage, the first of four he would make, led him to the Americas, or “New World.” Mermaids, mythical half-female, half-fish creatures, have existed in seafaring cultures at least since the time of the ancient Greeks. Typically depicted as having a woman’s head and torso, a fishtail instead of legs and holding a mirror and comb, mermaids live in the ocean and, according to some legends, can take on a human shape and marry mortal men. Mermaids are closely linked to sirens, another folkloric figure, part-woman, part-bird, who live on islands and sing seductive songs to lure sailors to their deaths. Mermaid sightings by sailors, when they weren’t made up, were most likely manatees, dugongs or Steller’s sea cows (which became extinct by the 1760s due to over-hunting). Manatees are slow-moving aquatic mammals with human-like eyes, bulbous faces and paddle-like tails. It is likely that manatees evolved from an ancestor they share with the elephant. The three species of manatee (West Indian, West African and Amazonian) and one species of dugong belong to the Sirenia order. As adults, they’re typically 10 to 12 feet long and weigh 800 to 1,200 pounds. They’re plant-eaters, have a slow metabolism and can only survive in warm water. Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness
