A temperature of just 10 degrees and a wind chill below zero was enough to keep ice skaters away from Roseto's ice skating rink at the Roseto Ball Park yesterday afternoon. The rink, which is perfectly situated under the pavilion with benches along side, will be open today from 1-5pm this afternoon. Although much warmer weather is forecast for later this week, today's temperatures and wind chill will be warmer than yesterday making a better day for skating. Curious Pet Behavior.......Why dogs walk in circles before lying down?
Why do dogs walk in circles before lying down?
This curious behavior is actually hardwired in them from prehistoric times, Leslie Irvine, author of "If You Tame Me: Understanding Our Connection With Animals" (Temple University Press, 2004). Fido's wild dog ancestors would walk in circles to make a nest — an area with stomped-down grass or underbrush where they could sleep. This behavior may have also driven out snakes or large insects that otherwise might have bothered them, Irvine said. Moreover, a nest would mark the dog's territory, telling other dogs to stay away, she said Why do cats stretch so much?
Cats like to stretch largely for the same reasons people do: It feels good, and it increases blood flow to the muscles, Andrew Cuff, a postdoctoral researcher of anatomy at the Royal Veterinary College in London, told Live Science in April 2016.
Cats sleep between 12 and 16 hours a day, meaning they're not moving for long amounts of time. When cats are sitting still or sleeping, their blood pressure drops, Cuff said. Stretching can reverse that, he added. "As you stretch, it activates all of your muscles and increases your blood pressure, which increases the amount of blood flowing to the muscles and also to the brain," Cuff said. "This helps wake you up and make you more alert." Stretching can also flush out toxins and waste byproducts that build up in the body during periods of inactivity, Cuff said. "Blessing Box" Starts Trend
Last summer, Roman Espinoza put up what he called a "blessing box" on his lawn. It was a miniature food pantry, modeled after Little Free Libraries, those boxes full of books people in people's front yards that others can borrow. What Espinoza, a 46-year-old Army veteran, hoped to do was alleviate the problem of hunger in his community. What his small gesture ended up doing is reveal a town's big heart. Today, his town -- Watertown, New York -- boasts more than 20 of these boxes. "Watertown residents have just gotten excited about the whole project ... about helping the community," Espinoza told CNN. More and more interest Since the story about the first box was published last July, Espinoza has seen more and more interest and support for his mission. The boxes are open around the clock for those who leave items and those who need to take them. The local Home Depot, where Espinoza bought the lumber for his first box, agreed to provide the wood for all the subsequent boxes. "We've helped cut a couple of the boxes' sizes and all that and we get the product ready for Roman whenever he needs it. So it's been a great partnership up to this point," said Chris Bosco, the general manager for the store. Home Depot hasn't been the only business to help out. Barilla, the pasta company has donated noodles -- a perfect food item for the boxes. A local contractor got involved by donating some of the roofing material that keep the boxes dry. A nearby credit union has donated utensil packets. More and more have reached out. That's not all. Watertown residents have been reaching out to Espinoza to make boxes for their yards. Chris Damm, who got his own box two months ago, saw the project as a way to engage with his neighbors. "We just recently moved in this summer. I came home, explained to my wife that I wanted to do something charitable for the neighborhood," said Damm. Despite being up for only a few months, the box is already helping out his neighbors. "We usually fill the box up about once a week," Damm told CNN. A small act, a huge difference. At the heart of the blessing box program is the idea that small acts of generosity can make a huge difference, especially when done anonymously. "All you do is you drive into a blessing box. You get out of your car. You walk up. You take the items that you need out of it, and then you drive away," Espinoza said. "You don't pay anything. We don't want any money." Looking ahead, Espinoza hopes to keep expanding the number of boxes. "Initially, when my wife and I were talking about [the blessing boxes] we were talking about having eight to 10," Espinoza said. Voters cast ballots to choose state electors; only white men who owned property were allowed to vote. As expected, George Washington won the election and was sworn into office on April 30, 1789. The series has been extremely well received and spaces will fill up. The sessions are designed to help individuals move beyond the challenges that keep them stuck, and chart a course toward reaching their dreams. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

We’ll go for a hike in snowshoes, stopping along the way to talk about outdoor scenarios and how to prepare for them. If we don’t get any snow, we’ll hike in our boots. The hike will be about two miles. Bring water and a snack. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your weight range when registering; this is to determine what size snowshoe you will need.
8th Annual Snow Ball Dinner Dance
Families First will present their 8th Annual Benefit Snow Ball Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. History of Snowshoeing

Learn how to snowshoe while learning the history of these helpful winter tools. If we don’t get any snow, we’ll focus on using trekking poles and hike in our boots. The hike will be about two miles, bring water and a snack. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Registration is required.

Scouts will learn how to prepare for being outdoors in winter as well as how to use snowshoes. We’ll go for a hike in snowshoes, stopping along the way to talk about outdoor scenarios and how to prepare for them. If we don’t get any snow, we’ll hike in our boots. You will be asked to specify your weight range when registering; this is to determine what size snowshoe you will need.
8th Annual Snow Ball Dinner Dance
Families First will present their 8th Annual Benefit Snow Ball Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The dance will be held at the Weona Park Recreation Center in Pen Argyl. Dinner will be provided by Just in Thyme and the music will be DJ Joe Franzo & Karaoke. There will be basket raffles and door prizes. The event is BYOB. Please dress casual. Tickets are $25.00 per person in advance and $30.00 at the door. You can purchase tickets by contacting Spring Shank - Pen Argyl High School, Kate Marsteller – Wind Gap Middle School, or Kelly Thomas – Plainfield Elementary. Spotted Lanternfly Public Meeting
The event will be held at the Berks County Agricultural Center Auditorium, 1238 County Welfare, Leesport, PA 19533 on Thursday, January 25, 2018, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This event is available to all members of the public and will include updates from Penn State Extension, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and Berks County Conservation District. This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Spotted Lanternfly regardless of home county and quarantine. Bring your questions and join us for discussions on the current status of this invasive insect, information on the quarantine, preparation for insect control in the 2018 season, and how individuals and communities can help stop the spread of this insect. Lunch and handouts are included.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.

Other possibilities include the rare Golden Eagle, Common Goldeneyes, Pileated Woodpeckers and many other winter bird species. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.
