Very cold wind chills expected until 10am Sunday. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin. If you can't recall or would like to ice skate, the Borough of Roseto has purchased and set up an outdoor ice rink located at the Roseto Ball Park. You can access the rink through the main gate only off of Denisco street. If gate is closed the ice rink is closed. It will open to the general public starting January 5th, weather permitting. It will be open Fridays from 5:00 - 8:00pm, Saturday it will open at 9:00am -12:00 noon for ice hockey and 12:00 noon - 5:00pm for general skating. The rink will also open on Sundays from 1:00 - 5:00pm. Weather permitting, the borough plans to open every weekend. There is no cost to come skate, so sharpen your blades and join us for some old fashioned fun this winter. 
Cell Phone Batteries & Cold Don't Mix
The short answer is that batteries rely on chemical reactions to work, and freezing temperatures slow or stop those reactions. Lithium-ion batteries, the commonplace rechargeables that power much of our modern lives and live inside almost every cellphone, discharge electric current as individual lithium ions move through solution from one end of the battery (the anode) to the other end (the cathode Chemists don't have a good idea of exactly how cold slows the reactions that take place inside lithium-ion batteries. "The exact mechanisms leading to poor performance of lithium-ion batteries at cold temperatures are still not well understood," a team of battery engineers wrote in a paper in the Journal of The Electrochemical Society in 2011. But it's broadly true that extreme cold slows the reactions in batteries of all types to a crawl. When my phone's charge meter read "1%" on that platform, all of the ions hadn't suddenly jumped to the cathode. In fact, cold temperatures prevent the kind of slow discharge battery ions do under room temperatures, as the engineering website Lithiumpros.com explains. But because the bitter cold had slowed or stopped the reaction inside the battery, it discharged less current than the phone needed to keep working, Under very cold temperatures, as Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory chemist Stephen J. Harris wrote on his website, the lithium-ion charging process can fail horribly. When the battery is frozen, though, the ions exit the solution and plate across the surface of the graphite as solid lithium. That process can wreck the performance and life of a battery. When my phone did warm up again, it proved it didn't need a charge anyway; it just required warm enough temperatures to enable the reaction. As I pressed the power button on the newly heated device, it turned on, and the battery meter read "94%." The ions hadn't gone anywhere. They just couldn't move properly in the cold. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - January 6Morse demonstrates telegraph 1838 On this day in 1838, Samuel Morse’s telegraph system is demonstrated for the first time at the Speedwell Iron Works in Morristown, New Jersey. The telegraph, a device which used electric impulses to transmit encoded messages over a wire, would eventually revolutionize long-distance communication, reaching the height of its popularity in the 1920s and 1930s. Samuel Finley Breese Morse was born April 27, 1791, in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He attended Yale University, where he was interested in art, as well as electricity, still in its infancy at the time. After college, Morse became a painter. In 1832, while sailing home from Europe, he heard about the newly discovered electromagnet and came up with an idea for an electric telegraph. He had no idea that other inventors were already at work on the concept. Morse spent the next several years developing a prototype and took on two partners, Leonard Gale and Alfred Vail, to help him. In 1838, he demonstrated his invention using Morse code, in which dots and dashes represented letters and numbers. Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. A Clean Slate, the Slate Belt’s Addiction Recovery Center, looks to the New Year as a time to offer New Opportunity! Two programs will begin in January that interface the arts with life skills, introspection and personal development.
Beginning January 10th, A Clean Slate will once again partner with Bloom Creative Studios to offer a six week Life Coaching and Art Journaling series. The series has been extremely well received and spaces will fill up. The sessions are designed to help individuals move beyond the challenges that keep them stuck, and chart a course toward reaching their dreams. Classes will be held from 10am – 12:30pm and from 6 – 8:30pm

The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

On January 20th, 2018, the Pennsylvania Trappers Association District 10 Live Bid Fur Auction at Stockertown Rod & Gun Club (205 Le Fevre Rd. Stockertown, PA 18083),. Learn how to snowshoe while learning the history of these helpful winter tools. If we don’t get any snow, we’ll focus on using trekking poles and hike in our boots. The hike will be about two miles, bring water and a snack. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Registration is required.

Scouts will learn how to prepare for being outdoors in winter as well as how to use snowshoes. We’ll go for a hike in snowshoes, stopping along the way to talk about outdoor scenarios and how to prepare for them. If we don’t get any snow, we’ll hike in our boots. The hike will be about two miles. Bring water and a snack. Wear waterproof boots and dress for the weather. Registration is required. You will be asked to specify your weight range when registering; this is to determine what size snowshoe you will need.
8th Annual Snow Ball Dinner Dance
Families First will present their 8th Annual Benefit Snow Ball Dinner Dance on Saturday, January 20, 2018 from 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm. The dance will be held at the Weona Park Recreation Center in Pen Argyl. Dinner will be provided by Just in Thyme and the music will be DJ Joe Franzo & Karaoke. There will be basket raffles and door prizes. The event is BYOB. Please dress casual. Tickets are $25.00 per person in advance and $30.00 at the door. You can purchase tickets by contacting Spring Shank - Pen Argyl High School, Kate Marsteller – Wind Gap Middle School, or Kelly Thomas – Plainfield Elementary. The event will be held at the Berks County Agricultural Center Auditorium, 1238 County Welfare, Leesport, PA 19533 on Thursday, January 25, 2018, 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
This event is available to all members of the public and will include updates from Penn State Extension, the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, and Berks County Conservation District. This event is open to anyone interested in learning more about the Spotted Lanternfly regardless of home county and quarantine. Bring your questions and join us for discussions on the current status of this invasive insect, information on the quarantine, preparation for insect control in the 2018 season, and how individuals and communities can help stop the spread of this insect. Lunch and handouts are included.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
The class will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Life in Christ, 51 E. Hillmond St., Bethlehem. The cost is $30, and information and registration can be found at http://www.celticfest.org/irish_tin_whistle_workshop.

Other possibilities include the rare Golden Eagle, Common Goldeneyes, Pileated Woodpeckers and many other winter bird species. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.
