Where Did Chewing Gum Come From? People have enjoyed gum since long before BubbleYum or Big League Chew came around. Our Neolithic ancestors chewed on gum made from birch bark tar.
Other cultures, such as the Ancient Greeks and American Indians, also chewed gum-like substances made from resins and other residues from trees, grasses and other plants. Paraffin was another popular gum base, though it couldn't be chewed until heated and moistened in the mouth. Modern chewing gum dates from the 1860s, when a substance called chicle was developed. Chicle was originally imported from Mexico as a rubber substitute and was tapped from a tropical evergreen tree named Manilkara chicle in the same way that latex is tapped from a rubber tree. Chicle gum became more popular than gums made from resins because it was smoother, softer and held its flavor longer. Now, most gums are made from synthetic bases because they are cheaper and more readily available. Follow Life's Little Mysteries on Twitter @llmysteries. We're also on Facebook & Google+. Can Nature Help Heart Disease?
David Levine, U.S. News Is Mother Nature medicinal? Can spending time outdoors help those with heart disease better cope with their condition? Could a walk in the woods actually be therapeutic? The answer is a definitive yes. And for both physical and mental health reasons. In fact, an emerging area of study known as ecotherapy, sometimes called green therapy or nature therapy, stems from the belief that health is not separated from the environment but part of our natural web. “The trend of nature therapy has been increasing over time,” says clinical psychologist Barry Jacobs, who specializes in helping families cope with serious and chronic medical illnesses as director of behavioral sciences for the Crozer-Keystone Family Medicine Residency Program in Springfield, Pennsylvania. “Over my career I have seen more emphasis on it, especially for people with chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease.” The primary benefit of being outdoors is exercise, perhaps the single most important healthful activity anyone can engage in. Most chronic diseases, and certainly heart disease, are directly linked with lack of physical activity. “Of all the countries in world, we still are probably among the top three unhealthiest countries because we are not active and out and about,” says Dr. Gerald Fletcher, a cardiologist in Jacksonville, Florida, who is affiliated with the Mayo Clinic Jacksonville. Exercise generally doesn’t cost any money, especially if it’s just a walk outdoors, says Fletcher, who is also the recent chair of the American Heart Association’s Council on Clinical Cardiology. And exercise can be as effective as – and in some cases replace – medications for heart disease. Before beginning to exercise regularly, patients should discuss their plans with their doctor. For those suffering from angina, or chest discomfort related to heart disease, exercise alone can allow some patients to stop taking beta blockers, which have side effects and are expensive, Fletcher says. And even those with more advanced heart disease can benefit. Fletcher says he has patients with ejection fractions – a measurement of the percentage of blood leaving the heart each time it contracts – of just 20 to 30 percent of normal who can exercise if well supervised. And while any exercise is good, outdoor exercise is best. “It is important to get into the outside environment. It’s more fun, you see others exercising, it’s a social thing,” Fletcher says. “If one can exercise outside, it is more productive and beneficial –more enjoyable. I have knee problems, so I open the windows and exercise, and it is more emotionally rewarding and productive, and I tend to exercise more.” Exercise for the Mind and Spirit. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - January 20Iran Hostage Crisis ends 1981 Minutes after Ronald Reagan’s inauguration as the 40th president of the United States, the 52 U.S. captives held at the U.S. embassy in Teheran, Iran, are released, ending the 444-day Iran Hostage Crisis. On November 4, 1979, the crisis began when militant Iranian students, outraged that the U.S. government had allowed the ousted shah of Iran to travel to New York City for medical treatment, seized the U.S. embassy in Teheran. The Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s political and religious leader, took over the hostage situation, refusing all appeals to release the hostages, even after the U.N. Security Council demanded an end to the crisis in an unanimous vote. However, two weeks after the storming of the embassy, the Ayatollah began to release all non-U.S. captives, and all female and minority Americans, citing these groups as among the people oppressed by the government of the United States. The remaining 52 captives remained at the mercy of the Ayatollah for the next 14 months. President Jimmy Carter was unable to diplomatically resolve the crisis, and on April 24, 1980, he ordered a disastrous rescue mission in which eight U.S. military personnel were killed and no hostages rescued. Three months later, the former shah died of cancer in Egypt, but the crisis continued. In November 1980, Carter lost the presidential election to Republican Ronald Reagan. Soon after, with the assistance of Algerian intermediaries, successful negotiations began between the United States and Iran. On the day of Reagan’s inauguration, the United States freed almost $8 billion in frozen Iranian assets, and the hostages were released after 444 days. The next day, Jimmy Carter flew to West Germany to greet the Americans on their way home.
