A pet's unconditional love is hard to resist, but these close encounters with certain domestic animals can sometimes make people sick.
In 2015, for example, there were at least four Salmonella outbreaks in the U.S. that were linked to close contact with "backyard chickens," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Many people came down with the bacterial infection, which can cause diarrhea, fever and stomachaches, by allowing backyard chickens into their homes as pets, or while kissing and handling the animals.
And Salmonella isn't the only issue associated with backyard chickens. A 2016 study suggested that backyard chickens raised in cities may be exposed to a broader range of parasites that can infest the bird's skin than commercially raised chickens.
The chickens can pick up the parasites, including fleas, mites and lice, while roaming the yard, but the study authors found that the birds' owners were unaware of these creepy-crawlies cohabitating with their pets.
Small pet turtles have also been tied to Salmonella outbreaks, the CDC says. To prevent the slow-moving reptiles from shedding Salmonella germs, the agency advises against bringing small turtles into homes and schools.

Northampton County Fifth Most in State
Laboratory, hospital emergency department, and sentinel medical provider data all indicate that the flu activity increased sharply from past weeks, making the flu Widespread in Pennsylvania like every other state in the country.
Northampton County has had 720 reported cases of the flu during the 2017-18 season making it the fifth highest county among the 67 in the state. Northampton also has had a total of 254 cases of type B flu which is the most in the state. Type B is usually less severe that type A, which the most common.
Overall, Allegheny leads the state with 2,982 followed by York 998, Westtmorelaand 965, and Berks 824. Neighboring Monore has had 130 and Lehigh 661.
Fourteen influenza associated deaths were reported last week 2 and total number of reported influenza associated deaths is 32, season to date, including one pediatric case.

What to Do With The Flu?

When you have the flu, one choice looms large in front of your feverish eyes: Should you drag your aching body out in the cold to go to the doctor or hospital, or should you just wrap yourself in blankets, drink fluids and stay put?
For sick people, there's no downside to going to the hospital or seeking care from a professional, said Dr. Amesh Adalja, an infectious-disease specialist and a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security. The antiviral drugs that can help people with the flu work better if they are prescribed early on, he said.
In deciding whether to head to the doctor's office or hospital, the main symptom that people should watch for is shortness of breath, Adalja told Live Science. ["When someone is unable to breathe normally, that's a sign the flu may be progressing to pneumonia," and the person should definitely seek care, he said. Having difficulty breathing means that the infection has moved downward.
Another sign of a particularly severe case of the flu that needs treatment is an unrelenting fever, Adalja said. If a person has a temperature of 101 degrees or higher, and the fever does not get better after taking acetaminophen or another over-the-counter medicine, then that person should see a doctor.
Fevers raise the heart rate, which takes a toll on the body, he said. Fevers can also make people feel especially miserable, so seek care if you feel that you cannot cope with your fever, he said.
A third reason to go to the doctor is a feeling of complete fatigue, to the point of being unable to do anything, and being completely confined to bed, he said.
Some groups of people are at higher risk of developing pneumonia or other complications from the flu, Adalja said.
Doctors worry about pneumonia developing in flu patients because pneumonia impairs the lungs' ability to function, and the body may not be able to get enough oxygen. In severe cases, flu patients may develop a severe breathing problem called respiratory distress and need to be hospitalized and put on a mechanical ventilator, he said.
People with the flu who choose to stay home should keep track of their symptoms. "Make sure you are getting better," Adalja said.
It may be helpful even to simply call your doctor if you're feeling sick, he noted. During flu season, doctors know that most people with certain symptoms have the flu, so they are often willing to call in a prescription for antiviral medicine to a pharmacy without requiring a patient to first come to the office.
So far this year, the U.S. is experiencing a relatively harsh flu season.
In recent years, the number of influenza-related deaths in the U.S. has ranged from 12,000 (during the 2011-2012 season), to 56,000 (during the 2012-2013 season), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

December 2017 - Staff members from HDOnTap and Codorus State Park worked through the cold and wind to replace and rewire cables at the nest site. Some of the nest had fallen. Two adult eagles have been frequenting the site with nesting material.

Edgar Allan Poe is born 1809

On this day in 1809, poet, author and literary critic Edgar Allan Poe is born in Boston, Massachusetts.
By the time he was three years old, both of Poe’s parents had died, leaving him in the care of his godfather, John Allan, a wealthy tobacco merchant. After attending school in England, Poe entered the University of Virginia (UVA) in 1826. After fighting with Allan over his heavy gambling debts, he was forced to leave UVA after only eight months. Poe then served two years in the U.S. Army and won an appointment to West Point. After another falling-out, Allan cut him off completely and he got himself dismissed from the academy for rules infractions.
Dark, handsome and brooding, Poe had published three works of poetry by that time, none of which had received much attention. In 1836, while working as an editor at the Southern Literary Messenger in Richmond, Virginia, Poe married his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm. He also completed his first full-length work of fiction, Arthur Gordon Pym, published in 1838. Poe lost his job at the Messenger due to his heavy drinking, and the couple moved to Philadelphia, where Poe worked as an editor at Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine and Graham’s Magazine. He became known for his direct and incisive criticism, as well as for dark horror stories like “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Also around this time, Poe began writing mystery stories, including “The Murders in the Rue Morgue” and “The Purloined Letter”–works that would earn him a reputation as the father of the modern detective story.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.
