This Could Be Bad For You......Receiving doggie kisses Doggie kisses are usually welcomed signs of affection, but sometimes this tongue bath to your nose and face can have unforeseen consequences. In one woman's case, the sloppy smooches from her pooch caused her to develop a severe bacterial infection.
The 70-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after collapsing in a chair, according to a 2016 report of her case. But four days later, she also came down with a high fever, headache, chills and diarrhea, and lab tests showed her kidneys were failing. Blood tests eventually revealed that the woman was infected with Capnocytophaga canimorsus, a bacteria found in the mouths of dogs and cats. Scratches and bites from pets can also transmit the infection. Although the woman had no bites or scratches, she told doctors that her Italian greyhound licked her. Her doctors said that pet owners, especially older adults with weak immune systems, might pick up this bacterial infection from their dogs or cats during these slobbery displays of affection.. By Laura Geggel and Jeanna Bryner, Live Science Easton Da Vinci Alters PlansALLENTOWN, Pa.— The Da Vinci Science Center and the City of Easton unveiled elements of the Facility and Exhibits Master Plan for Da Vinci Science City today, including plans for a NatureDome exhibit featuring live plants and animals to compliment the 100 ft. tall walk-through human body exhibit planned for the Science and Me exhibit. Lin Erickson, Executive Director and CEO of the Da Vinci Science Center, and Mayor Sal Panto, City of Easton, shared conceptual renderings for the NatureDome exhibit concept as well as other concepts included in the Facilities and Exhibits Master Plan for the $130 million science center planned for the waterfront in downtown Easton, Pa.
“Our goal has always been to create an experience that is unlike anything else in the Mid-Atlantic region,” said Lin Erickson. “We believe this plan positions us well to fulfill our mission, attract large numbers of people, and raise the money needed to fund the project.” The plan calls for three core exhibit areas, including: Science and Me: The centerpiece of the Science and Me exhibit will be a 100 foot tall walk-through human body exhibit that is designed to serve as a modern day interpretation of Da Vinci's iconic Vitruvian Man. Interactive exhibits within the walk-through human body and adjacent exhibit galleries will celebrate the human body, explore how it works, and explain how to keep it healthy. Science and Technology: The Science and Technology exhibit will showcase state-of-the-art technology used in the home, the workplace, and the community. A featured component of the experience will be the Lehigh Valley Factory Floor, an exhibit that showcases advanced technologies utilized throughout the Lehigh Valley as well as the career opportunities offered within the manufacturing industry. Science and Nature: The Science and Nature exhibit will feature NatureDome, a series of full-scale, natural, immersive indoor environments that will take visitors on a journey through ecosystems found in the Lehigh Valley, allow them to explore the plants, animals and geological features of the Lehigh Valley, and learn about some of the environmental issues facing the region. The centerpiece of NatureDome will be the Forest at Night exhibit, a large forested area where the clock will be reversed, allowing visitors to see and experience plants and iconic nocturnal animals native to the Lehigh Valley. Additional elements of the Facilities and Exhibits Master Plan include the Leonardo da Vinci Experience, a series of introductory exhibits about Leonardo and his connection to Da Vinci Science City; and a 10,000 square-foot traveling exhibit gallery capable of hosting major blockbuster exhibitions. “The project development team carefully studied several options during the Master Planning period,” said Lin Erickson. “The team collected input from funding partners and feedback from both content experts and the general public. An emphasis emerged around local stories, leading to the development of the 100 ft. tall walk-through human body to highlight the importance of the healthcare industry to the Lehigh Valley and the NatureDome to highlight important conservation stories found throughout the Lehigh and Delaware River watersheds.” The Facilities and Exhibits Master Plan was developed by EHDD Architects of San Francisco. The firm has developed numerous iconic science center, zoo and aquarium facilities in the United States including the Exploratorium science museum in San Francisco, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Philadelphia Zoo’s “Big Cat Falls” big-cat exhibit. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - January 18Post-World War I peace conference begins in Paris 1919 On this day in Paris, France, some of the most powerful people in the world meet to begin the long, complicated negotiations that would officially mark the end of the First World War. Leaders of the victorious Allied powers–France, Great Britain, the United States and Italy–would make most of the crucial decisions in Paris over the next six months. For most of the conference, U.S. President Woodrow Wilson struggled to support his idea of a “peace without victory” and make sure that Germany, the leader of the Central Powers and the major loser of the war, was not treated too harshly. On the other hand, Prime Ministers Georges Clemenceau of France and David Lloyd George of Britain argued that punishing Germany adequately and ensuring its weakness was the only way to justify the immense costs of the war. In the end, Wilson compromised on the treatment of Germany in order to push through the creation of his pet project, an international peacekeeping organization called the League of Nations. Representatives from Germany were excluded from the peace conference until May, when they arrived in Paris and were presented with a draft of the Versailles Treaty. Having put great faith in Wilson’s promises, the Germans were deeply frustrated and disillusioned by the treaty, which required them to forfeit a great deal of territory and pay reparations. Even worse, the infamous Article 231 forced Germany to accept sole blame for the war. This was a bitter pill many Germans could not swallow.
