Winter Weather Advisory Tuesday
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 am Tuesday to 6 am Wednesday for snow accumulations of 4 to 6 inches falling Tuesday and Tuesday night. While light snow or flurries will develop tonight causing slippery conditions on untreated pavement toward morning, the heaviest snowfall will occur after sunset Tuesday through Tuesday night. There may be some melting of the snow in the lower elevations during the middle of the day Tuesday. Be prepared for reduced visibilities at times, especially Tuesday night when snowfall rates may briefly approach an inch an hour. Plan for travel delays during the evening rush Tuesday. Temperatures following the snow should remain generally below freezing Wednesday with a hard freeze Wednesday night.

This Could Be Bad For You......Using a smartphone![]() Smartphones seem indispensable, but the more people use them, the more health concerns pop up.
Take sleep problems, for instance. Adults who spent more time on their smartphones before bedtime took longer to fall asleep and didn't sleep as well or as much, compared with people who used their phones less before hitting the sack, a 2016 study revealed. One reason could be that exposure to the screen's blue light may suppress the brain's production of the hormone melatonin, making it harder to nod off. Smartphones may affect the brain in other ways: A small study found chemical imbalances in the brains of teens who were addicted to using their smartphones. Brain scans showed the teens produced too much of the neurotransmitter gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), in an area of the brain that controls emotions. By Laura Geggel and Jeanna Bryner, Live Science ![]() Martin Luther King Jr. Day
Martin Luther King Jr. was an American Baptist minister and activist who became the most visible spokesperson and leader in the civil rights movement. wikipedia.org
In 1964, King became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize. He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977 and Congressional Gold Medal in 2004. On April 4, 1968, the civil rights leader was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1968, shortly after Martin Luther King died, a campaign was started for his birthday to become a holiday to honor him. After the first bill was introduced, trade unions lead the campaign for the federal holiday. It was endorsed in 1976. Following support from the musician Stevie Wonder with his single "Happy Birthday" and a petition with six million signatures, the bill became law in 1983. Martin Luther King Day was first observed in 1986, although it was not observed in all states until the year 2000. HUD Funds to Address Homelessness Scranton, PA – Today, U.S. Representative Matt Cartwright announced that the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) awarded $8,174,363 in Continuum of Care (CoC) funds to local agencies and organizations working to address homelessness. The CoC program is part of a strategic plan to solve homelessness for veterans, adults, families, youth, and children. The program provides federal funding to nonprofit organizations and local government agencies in an effort to rehouse homeless individuals, increase access to mainstream programs for the homeless, and promote self-sufficiency. “I am a strong advocate for federal funds that prevent people from experiencing homelessness and provide tools to achieve financial independence,”said Rep. Cartwright, a member of the Appropriations Committee. “Every American deserves a safe, stable place to live. I am glad that the recipients of these funds will continue to provide invaluable housing services to vulnerable Pennsylvanians in our local communities.” The program funds will be disbursed to member agencies of Eastern PA CoC, Wilkes-Barre/Luzerne CoC, and Scranton/Lackawanna CoC. CoC grants will provide critically needed support to these local programs on the front lines of serving individuals and families experiencing homelessness in their communities. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - January 15Packers face Chiefs in first Super Bowl 1967 On this day in 1967, at the Los Angeles Coliseum, the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs in the first-ever world championship game of American football. In the mid-1960s, the intense competition for players and fans between the National Football League (NFL) and the upstart American Football League (AFL) led to talks of a possible merger. It was decided that the winners of each league’s championship would meet each year in a single game to determine the “world champion of football.” In that historic first game–played before a non-sell-out crowd of 61,946 people–Green Bay scored three touchdowns in the second half to defeat Kansas City 35-10. Led by MVP quarterback Bart Starr, the Packers benefited from Max McGee’s stellar receiving and a key interception by safety Willie Wood. For their win, each member of the Packers collected $15,000: the largest single-game share in the history of team sports. Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness
