The temperature map at 8:30am today shows warmer temps (yellow) in the east, but to the west beginning in central Ohio, the blue circles and violet represent much colder weather ahead. At 8:30 in Pen Argyl the temperature is 60, but in Chicago it is 40 degrees colder. Those temperatures will arrive here tomorrow with freezing rain expected in the morning. The low temperature Sunday morning is expected to plummet to 8 degrees, meaning the temperature will be 50 degrees colder in Pen Argyl than it is this morning.
School Property Tax Elimination Update
Citizens across the Commonwealth voted November 7th to support the expansion of the state’s existing Homestead Exclusion program, allowing for up to 100 percent elimination of school property taxes on owner-occupied homes. Passage of the referendum was the first step in providing this critical elimination. State Senator Mario Scavello says that we now need legislation that provides the revenue for residential school property tax elimination. "I have been working since before the referendum vote with Senate leadership and the Independent Fiscal Office to develop a bill that will provide 100 percent elimination of school property taxes on owner-occupied homes through an increase in the state personal income tax (PIT). My bill does not increase the state sales tax, " Scavello said in a news release Friday. While I hoped my proposal would be ready mid-December, we are continuing to verify and finalize the revenue estimates from an increased state income tax to ensure there are no weaknesses in the bill. We have very few opportunities to “get this right,” so we must make sure the bill is sound. In the meantime, I have distributed a co-sponsorship memo to my colleagues to gain their support for the proposal. " After discussions with Senator Dave Argall, the prime sponsor of The Property Tax Independence Act, Scavello says that he agreed to hold off legislation until members of the Senate were polled regarding their support of various elimination proposals. "Because of the limited session days in January, I plan to officially introduce my bill at the end of this month and hold a press conference at the Capitol, " Scavello said.

Original Amos ‘n’ Andy debuts on Chicago radio 1926
On this day in 1926, the two-man comedy series “Sam ‘n’ Henry” debuts on Chicago’s WGN radio station. Two years later, after changing its name to “Amos ‘n’ Andy,” the show became one of the most popular radio programs in American history.
Though the creators and the stars of the new radio program, Freeman Gosden and Charles Carrell, were both white, the characters they played were two black men from the Deep South who moved to Chicago to seek their fortunes. By that time, white actors performing in dark stage makeup–or “blackface”–had been a significant tradition in American theater for over 100 years. Gosden and Carrell, both vaudeville performers, were doing a Chicago comedy act in blackface when an employee at the Chicago Tribune suggested they create a radio show.
When “Sam ‘n’ Henry” debuted in January 1926, it became an immediate hit. In 1928, Gosden and Carrell took their act to a rival station, the Chicago Daily News’ WMAQ. When they discovered WGN owned the rights to their characters’ names, they simply changed them. As their new contract gave Gosden and Carrell the right to syndicate the program, the popularity of “Amos ‘n’ Andy” soon exploded. Over the next 22 years, the show would become the highest-rated comedy in radio history, attracting more than 40 million listeners.
By the end of the 19th century, the Grand Canyon was attracting thousands of tourists each year. One famous visitor was President Theodore Roosevelt, a New Yorker with a particular affection for the American West.After becoming president in 1901 after the assassination of President William McKinley, Roosevelt made environmental conservation a major part of his presidency. After establishing the National Wildlife Refuge to protect the country’s animals, fish and birds, Roosevelt turned his attention to federal regulation of public lands. Though a region could be given national park status–indicating that all private development on that land was illegal–only by an act of Congress, Roosevelt cut down on red tape by beginning a new presidential practice of granting a similar “national monument” designation to some of the West’s greatest treasures.

Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness
Bangor Woman Organizes Promo Night
Lisa Rigione of Bangor is a donor Mom. Her son Mike DeBiase was an organ donor and saved six lives when he passed away from a brain bleed in February, 2015. He was 23. Twenty Two people die everyday waiting for a transplant.
Lisa helped organize a Gift of Life Organ Donor Awareness Night to bring awareness to the importance of organ donation. She also volunteers and speaks for the Gift of Life. She was lucky enough to partner with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms Hockey team for a night of awareness which will be held 7:05pm Saturday, February 17 at the PPL center in Allentown.
The Gift of Life will be the Phantoms' Non-profit of the night. Tickets are $20.00 (lower level). Go to www.pplcenter.com then to Events and tickets tab, find promotions and type "GIFTOFLIFE" Promo code:GIFTOFLIFE, additonal fees may apply.

Musical Instrument Collection Drive The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. The instruments will be used as loaners for students who cannot afford to buy or rent them. They will take them regardless of their condition. Upon arrival to the first floor of the building look for signs to the area where the collection is occurring. Lights refreshments will also be served.
Pocono Alliance on behalf of the West End Food Bank is requesting donations for new or gently used children’s coats along with gloves, hats and scarves for approximately 300 children have been identified that continue to be in need this winter. Boys and girls items are needed of all sizes. All items should be clean and in good condition.
The Women United Committee of United Way of Monroe County is requesting “Boxes of Valentines Love” for single mothers in the area. They are asking for a plastic box or shoe box filled with gift cards and items to pamper a single mother. Women United suggests items such as socks, hand warmers, scarves, gloves, hats, candy, lotion, soap, personal hygiene items, nail polish, make up, adult coloring books, journals, or puzzle books.

On January 18th, A Clean Slate will launch a brand new Creative Drama Workshop series offering participants to creatively approach the New Year with an opportunity for reflection, exploration and gratitude. The series will run 4 weeks and will begin on Thursday 01/18/2018 from 7pm. – 9pm. The workshops will explore the themes, motifs and symbols of the play “A Wrinkle In Time” by Madeleine L’Engle. No acting experience necessary, just a willingness to jump in and have fun. Sign-ups will be taken up until January 8th.

Irish Tin Whistle Workshop
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania - Celtic Cultural Alliance announces an Irish Tin Whistle workshop on January 27, 2018, as part of its continuing mission to promote and preserve the Celtic culture through arts, music, literature, dance, and history programs.
Our Irish whistle workshop with instructor Chris Finnegan, will teach the basics of how to play traditional tunes on a D tin whistle to students over age 14. Students will learn the basic fingering and how to get a good sound from the instrument. Simple music will also be introduced. Students should bring their own whistle, and Walton's is the recommended brand. It can be purchased from Donegal Square, 532 Main St., Bethlehem.
Chris Finnegan is an Uilleann Piper and Whistle player from Old Bridge, New Jersey. He has performed extensively in the United States and Ireland and holds the distinction of being the Piper to the Regimental Headquarters Staff of the “Fighting 69th” (1st Battalion, 69th Infantry, New York Army National Guard). In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.

In addition to the Uilleann Pipes, Chris also plays the Double Bass, Guitar, and Great Highland Bagpipes. Chris performs regularly as a solo musician, in duos and with the Irish Music groups Blackwater and Ballycastle.

Join center educator Rick Wiltraut for this trip into the scenic Delaware River National Recreation Area in search of wintering Bald Eagles. Other possibilities include the rare Golden Eagle, Common Goldeneyes, Pileated Woodpeckers and many other winter bird species. This is a great opportunity for photographers. Please dress for the weather, wear comfortable water-proof shoes and bring binoculars and lunch. There will be a stop for snacks and hot beverages along the way. Registration is required.

Breast Friends of PA Coach Bingo will be held Sunday, April 29 at 12 pm in the Charter's Banquest Facility at Plainfield Township Volunteer Fire Company in Winid Gap.
Please come out and support Breast Friends of PA as we support the men and women of PA. Help us help those through the trauma of cancer one friend at a time. The afternoon will feature 15 games of bingo and 1 Buy in game grand finale. An authentic Coach handbag will be going to the individual winner of each game. All participants will have an opportunity to purchase 50/50, Raffle tickets and extra sets of bingo packs.
All tickets will most likely sell out in pre sales. Admission is $30 per person pre-sale. Tickets can be purchased by phone Vivian Vega 321-236-3722 or at the door (if not sold out). Tickets are non refundable.
