How Parents and Teachers are Prepping for School
(StatePoint) It may be summertime, but parents and educators alike are beginning to look ahead towards the 2016-2017 school year. Here are three ways they are getting prepared. Check-Up The school year brings with it a lot of contact with a lot of kids. An annual physical, scheduled before the school year begins is an excellent way to make sure children are up-to-date with vaccinations and in good general health. Parents of young athletes may want to speak to their pediatrician about injury prevention and other related concerns. This is also an ideal time to schedule an appointment with an optometrist if kids are complaining of any near or farsightedness. Whether it’s the blackboard, a book or a projected image in the classroom, wearing needed glasses on day one will make the transition to a new school year much smoother. New Tech Tools New technology has the power to create strong engagement in learning this fall and beyond. Educators are busy securing tools that aid students in learning key skills needed for their futures, while benefitting the school. For example, Casio’s portfolio of LampFree classroom projectors combine a laser and LED light source to provide a unique, high-brightness, mercury-free tool that uses half the power per unit than its traditional lamp-based counterparts. A 20,000-hour lifespan, the equivalent of approximately 18 years of school use, means that schools can save nearly $2,500 when compared to traditional mercury lamp projectors. Reading Season Whether poolside or on a road trip, all those hours of free time make summer the ideal season to squeeze in recreational reading -- even in the late days leading up to the new school year. While summer reading should definitely be fun, ideally it will also supplement the curriculum ahead. Whether choosing books early or late in the summer, check out age-appropriate summer reading lists published by your school and library that can keep kids entertained, and help them get a leg up on classroom learning. Parents, students and schools alike are using the summer wisely to get prepped for a productive school year ahead.

Fifth Annual St. Roch's Mass Former parishioners and friends of the closed St. Roch’s Catholic Church, Second Street, West Bangor will participate in the celebration of the Fifth Annual Mass on Saturday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Monsignor Vincent P. York, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Parish, will be the celebrant.
The Diocese of Allentown has granted permission to hold the Annual Mass in August each year since 2012. The liturgy and music for the August 13 Mass will include readings and hymns in honor of St. Roch, the Patron Saint. Attendees will also participate in reading the Prayer to St. Roch.

Tasty Tuesdays is back at Trinity Lutheran Church! NORTHAN, Australia, (UPI) -- A Russian balloonist broke the record for traveling around-the-world in the fastest time in a hot air balloon. Fyodor Konyukhov, 64, passed directly over the airfield Saturday afternoon in the Western Australian town of Northam where he began his journey 11 days ago, the Australian reported. He landed a few hours later in Bonnie Rock, about 100 miles east of Northam.
If his record is confirmed by the World Air Sports Federation, it is two days quicker than the record by the late American Steve Fossett in 2002. "He's safe, he's sound, he's happy. It's just amazing,'' support crew member John Wallington said from the landing site. He landed at 6:30 p.m. Saturday and was greeted by family members. A video posted on his instagram page shows his balloon flying over Australia as part of the 20,500-mile journey. The first men to achieve the trip were Bertrand Piccard and Brian Jones in 1999 in 19 days. Konyukhov traveled across the Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean aboard the 184-foot helium-filled balloon. He flew over New Zealand, South America, the Cape of Good Hope,the borders of Antarctica and safely returned to Australia.

Ways to Live More Sustainable
(StatePoint) It might not feel like you alone can have an impact on the environment, but over time, small lifestyle changes can make a substantial difference.
Need some ideas to get started? Draw inspiration from the collective efforts of one California olive company working to run operations in an eco-friendly way.
“Our employees are vital to our zero waste efforts,” says Dennis Leikam, environmental manager at Musco Family Olive Company. “Through monthly sustainability topics and a compost program, they’re encouraged to reduce not only our corporate environmental impact, but also their personal impact away from work, as well.”
Over 75 percent of residential waste is recyclable, but most people only recycle 30 percent, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. While it may be unrealistic to produce zero waste at home, you can get closer to that goal.
Such commitment to sustainability is achievable in your own home. Here are some simple actions you can take.
Buy the Right Stuff
Musco has an ethical sourcing program to ensure that every part of the olive production process meets their sustainability goals. Do your own ethical sourcing by:
• Buying local.
• Buying products with minimal, recyclable packaging.
• Reducing your use of disposable items.
• Choosing products from companies with a commitment to sustainability.
Drive Less and Bike More
In an effort to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at its facilities by five percent, Musco is tracking emissions through Carbon Disclosure Project, the leading non-profit working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. You can lower your carbon footprint by consolidating car trips, and walking or riding your bike to work and on errands.
Conserve Water
In the last 10 years, Musco has recycled almost 1.5 billion gallons of water onsite in a closed-loop system. They even grow a special grass that pulls salt from the soil, is harvested and becomes a tasty supplement for local cattle. Here are ways you too can conserve water:
• Turn off the tap when you brush your teeth.
• Use the dishwasher. Unless your dishwasher is more than a decade old, it uses less water than washing by hand. Really.
• Put a brick in your tank to get a low-flow effect without the cost of a new toilet.
• Add aerators to faucets. They cost less than $10 and the accumulated water savings is substantial.
• Limit watering outdoors to the coolest times of day, use a moisture sensor, and landscape with native, drought-resistant plants.
Bring Your Own Bag
Remembering to bring your own bags to the supermarket is hard at first, but is a great habit. Keep market bags in the back of your car and get a foldable tote bag to store in your purse.
Feed the Soil
Take advantage of municipal compost programs. Most allow whole pizza boxes, paper plates, plate scraps, and bones in the green bin -- all no-no’s for a backyard bin. Or, get yourself a worm box and compost small food scraps that will help your garden grow. You can also toss veggie scraps into a freezer bag until you have enough to make veggie broth.

The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause.

There will be hands-on opportunities for visitors who wish to try out some of these crafts for themselves.
Demonstrations such as spinning, weaving, wheat weaving, bobbin lace, horn work, pottery and blacksmithing will take place. The purpose of Heritage Craft Day is to provide a greater awareness of these historic folk crafts that were essential to everyday living in previous generations. This is a wonderful chance for individuals, families and children to explore the exciting world of traditional crafts. The crafters are under tents in case of rain. The schedule is subject to change.

A children’s area will offer the younger set an opportunity to craft a simple toy or rag doll for themselves. Bonnie Scott, our master puppeteer, will teach children puppet making.

Participants in the course Acoustic Guitar Building - the Basics will learn how to make a fine stringed instrument, a Martin 1-18 reproduction 1928 guitar, at Northampton Community College’s (NCC) Fab Lab in the Fowler Family Southside Center, 511 E. Dogs are welcome to hike on leash. Meet by the flag pole at the Visitor Center at 400 Belfast Rd. Registration is not required. Totts Gap Dance at COTA, 7 PM, $10 Admission. Presbyterian Church of the Mountain, Main Street & Church Lane, Delaware Water Gap, PA 18327. The COTA festival begins on Friday night at the Dutot Museum at 6:00 PM with a musically themed art show and reception, followed by theater, dance, poetry and classical music at the Presbyterian Church of the Mountain from 7:00 - 9:30 PM . Bethlehem Celtic Fest 2016
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania, — The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will reach its 29th year of presenting the largest free Highland Games and Celtic festival in North America during the weekend of September 23rd through the 30th. This year brings back old Celtic Classic favorites such as Timlin & Kane, Seven Nations and the Glengarry Bhoys as well as new features like Low Lily, Moxie Strings, Barrule & Calan. From bagpipes to bodrahns, fiddles to whistles, Bethlehem will be filled with foot stomping Celtic music all weekend.

The animal presentation starts at 12:30 and will be followed by a panel discussion with Senator Scavello, Chairman of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee; PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary, Cindy Dunn; PA Game Commission Executive Director, Matthew Hough; and PA Fish and Boat Commission Executive Director, John Arway. Each panelist will present an update and receive questions and comments from the audience. Many exhibitors will be providing hands-on activities.
