St. Luke’s Brings World’s Smallest Pacemaker to Lehigh Valley![]() Bethlehem, PA St. Luke’s University Health Network is pleased to announce the successful implantation of the Medtronic Micra Transcatheter Pacing System, the first in northeastern Pennsylvania. Cardiac electrophysiologist Sudip Nanda, MD, performed the procedure to implant the pacemaker on Tuesday, August 9 at St. Luke’s University Hospital – Bethlehem.
Mary Molinari of Mount Pocono is not only the first patient in northeastern Pennsylvania to benefit from this new technology, she is a primary example of how St. Luke’s is providing better health care to the people of Monroe County. “This revolutionary technology is the first FDA-approved leadless pacemaker,” says electrophysiologist Darren M. Traub, DO, Medical Director of the St. Luke’s Heart Rhythm Center. “Comparable in size to a large vitamin, the Micra can be placed minimally invasively through a catheter and can pace the heart for up to 12 years.” Dr. Douglas Degler, MD, Mrs. Molinari’s primary care physician, referred her to cardiologist Dr. Jeffrey Bair, MD, both of whom practice in Monroe County. After reviewing the other factors affecting Mary’s health, Dr. Bair referred her to Dr. Nanda to consider a wider range of options. Dr. Nanda recommended the pacemaker to address Mary’s irregular heart rate, which is very slow at times, causing her to become lightheaded and even pass out on occasion. Other factors include a stroke that weakened her entire right side and a bilateral mastectomy Mary had years ago that provided challenges by creating thick scar tissue. The Micra device provides the unique capacity to pace her heart, and not interfere with veins of either arm, which could cause serious complications in post–mastectomy patients. “The cardiac electrophysiologists at St. Luke’s University Health Network are dedicated to delivering the most state-of-the-art treatments available for heart rhythm disturbances,” Dr. Traub says. “As soon as this technology became FDA approved we worked with the hospital administration to make the Micra available to select patients – like Mary – who qualify for the device. We are proud to offer the most advanced cardiac devices and ablation therapy right here in the Lehigh Valley.” All of St. Luke’s electrophysiologists worked together to bring Micra TPS to St. Luke’s. Dr. Steven M. Stevens, MD, stresses that this technology plays an important role in advancing modern pacing systems. “Micra TPS has no leads, hence we avoid lead-related complications,” he says. “There are no restrictions on the patient as far as arm movement is considered and they can go back to full activity much sooner. In the select group of patients who qualify for this device, it is aesthetically compelling as there is no visible scar or device footprint on the chest wall.” To implant the Micra pacemaker, Dr. Nanda made a small incision in Mary’s groin and then threaded the pacemaker through her femoral vein and into her heart. The Micra TPS is attached to the heart with small tines and delivers electrical impulses that pace the heart through an electrode at the end of the device. It responds to the patients' activity levels by automatically adjusting therapy. Mary, who returned home Wednesday – the day after her surgery – says she is recovering nicely. She feels honored and privileged to be the first patient to receive the Micra pacemaker. “It affords me a better quality of life without compromising my other health issues. Dr. Nanda and his staff were amazing. The treatment I received was first rate. I look forward to many more years of living my life to the fullest.” Another benefit of the Micra TPS is patients may receive full-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, which is not possible for individuals with many traditional pacemakers. Should the Micra ever need to be removed, the Micra design incorporates a retrieval feature, but it may also be left in the body. For patients who need more than one device, the miniaturized Micra TPS has a unique feature that enables it to be permanently turned off. As a result, it can remain in the body and a new device can be implanted without risk of electrical interaction. Tips to Winning the War with Back to School Shopping

(StatePoint) It’s no secret that kids have strong opinions when it comes to style and that their tastes are always evolving. With 38 percent of parents spending between $100 to $249 per child on back-to-school clothing, according to statistics from online retailer zulily, parents and kids alike should feel confident in their purchases.
“It’s never a good feeling to buy your child new clothes, only to find a favorite color, pattern or style has changed,” says Shawn Redman, senior buyer and kids’ fashion expert for zulily.com. “This back-to-school season, our ‘Kids’ Trend Report’ uncovered that now, more than ever, it’s important to involve kids in the shopping process to lessen potential power struggles and inspire smiles on the first day of school.”
Redman recommends planning ahead to avoid stress. Start by cleaning out your kids’ closets so you can see what still fits and create an accurate checklist of needed items. Then, look for the best deals to help you stay within budget. Online retailers like zulily.com can be a go-to destination to discover great deals on back-to-school shopping, including a variety of shoes, apparel, accessories and school supplies. Daily, the site features a new assortment of unique looks at great prices.
To help parents shop for kids, zulily is offering key survey findings from kids ages five to 12, in its inaugural “Kids’ Trend Report.”
• Girls go against gender norms while embracing the combination of comfort and style, with their top look being athletic (40 percent), followed by boho (33 percent). Boys, however, are looking to a more adult-influenced approach for fashion inspiration, preferring city chic (48 percent) and preppy (33 percent) for their back-to-school wardrobe.
• The classic, yet cool, color of blue is the top choice among all kids (26 percent). However, for girls, pink (29 percent) and purple (25 percent) reign supreme. Boys still prefer blue (42 percent), with red (15 percent) and black (12 percent) coming in as second and third choices.
• Sorry Mom, girls say you are not their number one style icon. While many moms use their own style as the main source of inspiration when shopping for their kids (38 percent), girls are more likely to turn to friends (41 percent) first for inspiration, then to Mom (26 percent), followed closely by television (22 percent). Boys continue to go with the flow and frequently turn to parents for style inspiration first (38 percent), followed closely by friends (34 percent), with television being the smallest source of their style inspiration (14 percent).
• Style inspiration isn’t the only thing moms and daughters may not see eye-to-eye on, with 36 percent of moms admitting to disagreeing on clothing choices with their daughters. To beat the wardrobe wars, a majority of moms (58 percent) recommend giving their children choices and letting them ultimately pick their own outfits.
“The back-to-school season is a perfect opportunity to inspire kids to express their individuality and boost their confidence,” says Redman.

Helpful Hacks for Kitchen Cleanup

(StatePoint) Prepare. Eat. Clean up. Repeat. In the kitchen, it’s a never-ending cycle of conquering messes. These seven simple cleaning hacks, tips and products that will cut down time spent restoring order in your space.
1. Start with the Sink
Before cooking, always empty the sink to make space for washing dirty items, including your hands. Combat lingering odors from garlic or onions by rubbing your hands on your stainless steel sink to remove the smell. Be sure to disinfect the sink first, as research shows that Salmonella and E. coli are found on 45 percent of kitchen sinks!
2. Find a Fabulous Faucet
Rethink your faucet. Simplify cleanup with a high-arc pulldown spout, which provides extra room for large pots and pans, and the ability to reach all corners of the sink. Plus, new spray technologies, such as Moen’s Power Clean, can provide more spray power while containing splash and minimizing mess. Greater force means faster cleanup and less water used on tough-to-rinse foods, like peanut butter.
3. Make Microwave Miracles
Your sink and faucets are the workhorses of the kitchen, but your microwave is probably next in line. So, what happens if your eggs explode or your sauce splatters? Place a bowl of water with cut lemons in the microwave and run it until the water boils. Let it sit for a few minutes to allow the steam to loosen the splatter and then wipe clean. In the future, always cover your items with a microwave-safe lid, paper towel or even a coffee filter!
4. Get Creative with Coffee Filters
Coffee filters are perfect for many cleaning (or mess prevention) hacks in the kitchen. They work as a spoon rest, a strainer or a wrap for ice cream cones to catch drips, and can be placed under greasy foods like bacon or french fries to soak up excess oil and cut down on cleanup (and calories).
5. Go Streak-Free
Tired of the constant fingerprints and streaks on stainless appliances? Ditch harsh cleaners for a simple solution: water and a microfiber cloth, which feature microscopic fibers that pick up more than regular cloths. Better yet, choose faucets and appliances with finishes that repel these unsightly marks, such as Moen’s exclusive Spot Resist faucet finish, which helps resist fingerprints and water spots.
6. Don’t Trash Food -- Dispose It
More than 60 million homeowners rely on garbage disposals to assist with daily kitchen cleanup, according to Moen Consumer & Market Insights. This handy appliance can significantly reduce the amount of trash you create, which means sending less to the landfill and fewer smelly garbage cans! Choose a powerful, dependable garbage disposal, such as Moen’s complete line that quickly and powerfully grinds food scraps, allowing you to spend more time at the dinner table and less time at the sink.
7. Protect the Pantry
Most pantry doors are shut for a reason -- there’s a mess lurking in there! From sugar spills to syrup leaks, many shelves are a sticky situation. Non-adhesive shelf liners are an ideal solution for easy cleanup. The solid surface will help contain spills and, since they’re machine-washable, you can toss the liner in the wash and re-use it.
Life in the kitchen is messy, but with a few tips and updates, cleanup can be a breeze.
