Miami-Dade Schools officers responded Wednesday morning to Homestead High School, where students and teachers spotted the big snake slithering across a field.
The snake was turned over to the Miami-Dade Fire Department's Venom Unit, which said the serpent will be transferred to a Florida Fish & Wildlife facility. Teachers said the experience was educational for students. "They were actually able to see it here. Not just book-wise or even video-wise. They were actually able to see it in real life, an example of invasive species coming into our territory," Homestead High School teacher Joe Gonzalez told KSPR-TV.
Real Estate...Tips to Stop Drafts and Save Money![]() (BPT) - Can you imagine keeping your windows open all winter long? The heat loss, cold drafts and all that money spent on wasted energy would be staggering. But if your home has folding pull-down attic stairs, a whole-house fan, a fireplace or clothes dryer, you may be doing the equivalent of leaving the windows open every day.
Drafts from these often overlooked spaces waste energy and cost you big in the form of higher energy bills. They are also the largest source of heating and cooling loss in the home. Most homeowners are well aware of the benefits that caulk and weather-stripping provide to minimize energy loss and drafts. But what can you do about drafts from the four largest energy leaks in your home - the folding attic stairs, the whole house fan, the fireplace and the clothes dryer? Here are some tips and techniques that can easily, quickly and inexpensively seal and insulate these areas. Attic stairs When attic stairs are installed, a large hole (approximately 10 square feet) is created in your ceiling. The ceiling and insulation that were there have to be removed, leaving only a thin, unsealed, sheet of plywood. Because your attic space is ventilated directly to the outdoors, the attic space can be very cold in the winter, and in the summer it can be very hot. And what is separating your conditioned house from your unconditioned attic? Only a thin sheet of plywood. Try this yourself: at night, turn on the attic light and shut the attic stairway door. If you see any light coming through, it means your heated and air-conditioned air is leaking out of these large gaps in your home, 24-hours a day. An easy, low-cost solution to this problem is to add an insulated attic stair cover that seals the stairs and stops drafts and energy loss. Add the desired amount of insulation over the cover to restore the insulation removed from the ceiling. Whole-house fans and air-conditioning vents When whole-house fans are installed, a large hole (up to 16 square feet or larger) is created in your ceiling. The ceiling and insulation that were there have to be removed, leaving only the drafty ceiling shutter between you and the outdoors. An easy solution to this problem is to add a whole house fan shutter seal. Made from white textured flexible insulation, you simply install the seal over the ceiling shutter, secure it with Velcro, and trim it to fit. The shutter seal can also be used to seal and insulate air conditioning vents, and is easily removed when desired. Fireplaces It's ironic that while fireplaces are intended to heat up a house, they can create some seriously cold drafts. Fireplaces, especially during the winter heating season, are energy losers. One study showed that an open damper on an unused fireplace in a well-insulated house can raise overall heating-energy consumption by 30 percent. Another recent study showed that for many consumers, their heating bills may be more than $500 higher each winter because of the drafts and wasted energy caused by fireplaces. Even if the damper is shut, it's not air-tight, and glass doors don't stop the drafts either. Your chimney is an opening that leads directly outdoors - just like an open window and like a giant straw sucking your expensive heated or air-conditioned air right out of your house! A simple way to avoid this problem is to add a Fireplace Plug to your fireplace. Available from Battic Door, a company known for their energy conservation products, the Fireplace Plug is an inflatable pillow that seals the fireplace damper, eliminating drafts, odors, and noise. The pillow is removed whenever the fireplace is used, then reinserted after. Clothes dryer exhaust ducts In many homes, the room with the clothes dryer is the coldest room in the house. In the winter, cold drafts come in through the duct, through your dryer and into your house. Many dryer vents use a sheet-metal flapper to try to reduce these drafts. This is very primitive technology that does not provide a positive seal to stop the drafts. Compounding the problem is that over time, lint clogs the flapper valve, causing it to stay open. A surprisingly simple solution to this problem is to add a dryer vent seal. This will reduce unwanted drafts, and also keeps out pests, bees and rodents. The vent will remain closed unless the dryer is in use. When the dryer is in use, a floating shuttle rises to allow warm air, lint and moisture to escape. For more information on Battic Door's energy conservation solutions and products for your home, visit www.batticdoor.com or, to request a free catalog, send a self-addressed stamped envelope to P.O. While your negotiation tactics matter, experts say that timing is a bigger factor than you may realize when it comes to getting a great deal on a new car.
“The time of year, the time of the month and even the time of day can affect the deal you get and what’s available for purchase,” says Brian Moody, executive editor of Autotrader. “Timing can be everything if you want the best deal.” Moody and the experts at Autotrader are offering some important timing insights to those on the hunt for a vehicle. • Show up late. At the end of the day, sales and finance professionals are ready to head home. But a smart salesperson will not let a serious potential customer walk away just because the dealership is ready to close shop. Provided the salesperson is dealing with a serious buyer, he or she may make concessions during late hours to speed up negotiations. Of course, shoppers may be tired and ready to go home, too, causing the plan to backfire. So make sure you’re well-rested and ready to hang in there for the long haul if you decide to pursue this strategy. • Wait it out: Know what you want? Don’t rush to the dealership. If possible, consider waiting until the end of a month or even the end of a quarter to make your vehicle purchase. “Just like at the end of the year, dealers have monthly and quarterly sales goals. If they’re just shy of the target, they could be more motivated to get the deal done,” suggests Moody. • Be in-season. The season you purchase your vehicle matters. For example, late summer and early fall is when new-model-year vehicles are rolling into dealers’ inventories. Some of the best deals are on “leftover” models. For instance, a 2016 model may be steeply discounted once 2017 models arrive. In some cases, dealers will even have the previous model year in stock. For example, Autotrader.com still has listings for brand-new 2015 model vehicles. Keep in mind though, that since a leftover model is already outdated, it’s automatically worth less than a car from the latest model -- which means you’ll get a lower price if you resell. If you plan to keep your car a long time, this shouldn’t be a big issue. “For those who don’t have to have the latest and greatest model, this is an easy way to save,” says Moody. “However, don’t expect to get both the latest model and the best deal. It’s likely you’ll have to make some concessions if you want the best possible price. For more tips and strategies, visit Autotrader.com/NewCarBuying. Learning a few tricks of the trade about timing your new car purchase may help you save considerably. TRAFFIC ALERTS WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 12(DELABOLE ROAD (WASHINGTON TWP) Between Between O.W. Dyana Furmansky will speak about Edge’s life at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, September 21, in Kopecek Hall at Northampton Community College (NCC). Furmansky is an award-winning author who writes about environmental topics and the American west. Her book, Rosalie Edge, Hawk of Mercy: The Activist Who Saved Nature from the Conservationists,” garnered the 2009 Wormsloe Foundation Nature Award and the 2010 Colorado Book Award. Furmansky’s talk will kick off the College’s annual humanities series. This year’s theme is “Flying Free: Birds and the Human Spirit.” Through books, films and discussions, students and interested members of the community will probe questions such as “Why do we equate particular birds with human traits such as wisdom, pacifism, or vanity or with human experiences such as freedom and adventure or captivity or mourning?” and “What does the human connection to birds tell us about links between the sciences and the humanities?” The faculty coordinator for “Flying Free: Birds and the Human Spirit” is Dr. John K. Leiser, professor of biology and environmental science at Northampton and a past Pennsylvania Professor of the Year. Leiser proposed the topic because “birds are the subjects not only of our natural curiosity but also of scientific inquiry and artistic expression.” Community partners for NCC’s humanities series include the Bethlehem Area Public Library, Eastern Monroe Public Library, Bethlehem Area School District, Stroudsburg Area School District, Historic Bethlehem Museums & Sites, and Monroe County Historical Association. The series is endowed through generous donors and a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. Furmansky’s talk will be open to the public free of charge. Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Bangor, PA is hosting the group Simple Gifts! Two women plus twelve instruments equals one good time when Simple Gifts takes the stage at Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church on September 24th, starting at 7:00 p.m. Admission is free; an offering will be taken during intermission to benefit PUMP. Drawing on an impressive variety of ethnic folk styles, this award-winning duo plays everything from lively Irish jigs and down-home American reels to hard-driving Klezmer freilachs and haunting Gypsy melodies, spicing the mix with the distinctive rhythms of Balkan dance music, the lush sounds of Scandinavian twin fiddling, and original compositions written in a traditional style. Combining tradition with innovation, Simple Gifts creates some of the finest arrangements in folk music today: swing fiddle creeps into a Romanian dance, spoons show up in an Irish reel, and a traditional West Virginia tune is enhanced by a Turkish drum and Indian shruti box. Based in the hills of central Pennsylvania, these women play an amazing array of instruments. Linda Littleton and Karen Hirshon switch with ease among fiddle, mandolin, banjo, recorders, bowed psaltery, hammered dulcimer, baritone fiddle, guitar, and percussion. Simple Gifts is well-known for their outgoing stage presence, which is warm, personal, and accented with humor. These women deliver their music with rare intensity and contagious enthusiasm. It’s obvious that Simple gifts loves the music they play and knows how to share their excitement with the audience. This is an act not to be missed! Groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. A group of themed pumpkins should have at least 6 or more in their display. There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes range from $100 to $25.00. Please call Sherry Haycock at 610-588-6894 to register your group and theme. In addition, our scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings. Please save your old stockings (any color and size). You can drop them off at the Borough Building or to Sherry Haycock at The Little Corner Cafe. Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand.
