Bangor Halloween Parade - Update
The Bangor Elks Halloween parade originally scheduled for October 13 has been changed to October 20. The theme for this year's parade is Back To The 50s.
The parade starts 7:00pm at the Bangor Bee Hive and ends at the Bangor Elks. All Children who participate in the parade are invited for free hot dogs & root beer at the Bangor Elks. Register for the parade with Keith Heard 610-588-1195.

Minsi Lake Rehab Meeting
On Monday, Oct. 3, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will host a 6:30 p.m. public meeting at Bangor Area High School, 123 Five Points Richmond Road, to provide an update on reconstruction of the Minsi Lake dam. The meeting is a follow-up to the recent release of more than $25 million in state funding that is dedicated to the repair of five high-hazard, unsafe dams managed by the PFBC.
The Minsi Lake dam in Upper Mt. Bethel Township is classified as a “high hazard unsafe” dam by the Pennsylvania Code, where significant infrastructure damage and loss of life are likely if an uncontrolled breach were to occur. As a high-hazard dam with limited spillway capacity and significant structural issues, Minsi Lake was placed on the PFBC’s top priority list of dams for rehabilitation.

Lukie's Fall Festival
The 13th Annual Lukie's Fall Festival will be held from 11-5 on Saturday, October 8th, 2016, at Weona Park, in Pen Argyl, PA. All of the proceeds from Lukie’s Fall Festival will be donated to Cure SMA. Cure SMA, is an nonprofit organization with the mission to find a treatment and cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Land Rover Builds Record Setting Lego Replica of London Bridge
WARWICKSHIRE, England, (UPI) -- Land Rover celebrated the release of its New Discovery model by constructing a replica of London's Tower Bridge out of Legos. The 42-foot tall structure was created using an astounding 5,805,846 individual pieces and claimed the Guinness World Record for "Largest Lego sculpture (most bricks)."
"We are thrilled that Jaguar Land Rover has used Lego bricks to add some Guinness World Record-breaking creativity to the launch of the latest Discovery," said Lego UK and Ireland spokeswoman Emma Owen. "This is an epic, outstanding build that absolutely captures the imagination in a way we haven't seen before. With Lego bricks and some imagination you really can build anything!"
Two New Discovery SUVs drove up each side of the bridge before meeting in the middle as the structure was illuminated and British adventurer Bear Grylls dropped from a helicopter to place the final brick.
Duncan Titmarsh, the U.K.'s only Lego Certified Professional, constructed the replica bridge in five months with the help of other expert Lego Master Builders.
A 186,500-brick model of an America's Cup sailboat was also constructed for the event and towed through the water by Olympic gold medalist Sir Ben Ainslie.

Fall, the Best Season for Planting Trees
(BPT) - Planting a tree is an investment in the future, according to a Greek proverb: "A society grows great when old men plant trees under whose shade they never expect to sit." But did you know planting trees around your home is also an investment in your real estate value and the value of your neighborhood? Or, that it's one best made not in the season of new life, spring, but in the fall as winter approaches?
Most Americans say they would - and in fact do - pay more for a home with trees in the yard, according to a Wakefield Research survey sponsored by the Alliance for Community Trees, a program of the Arbor Day Foundation. On average, Americans pay 18 percent more for a house with trees in the yard, and 79 percent say they feel trees define their neighborhood's character. Nearly three quarters say they would never move to a neighborhood that didn't have trees.
"The presence of trees in a neighborhood is as important to homebuyers as proximity to good schools, accessibility to shopping and entertainment, and commutability to work," says Dana Karcher, Alliance for Community Trees program manager. "But the value of trees goes far beyond beautifying a neighborhood. Planting trees helps on a local and global scale by reducing air pollution, controlling stormwater runoff and even mitigating climate change."
With 61 percent of Americans saying they would welcome more trees in their neighborhoods, planting one in your home environment is good for your property value and your community. What's more, fall is a perfect time for planting trees and shrubs. The fall planting season kicks off with NeighborWoods month in October, the annual celebration of trees and green communities that supports local tree planting organizations and their efforts to make neighborhoods cleaner, greener and healthier. This initiative is made possible in part by like minded companies including Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day (R), Double Tree by Hilton and the Aetna Foundation. Visit arborday.org/neighborwoods to learn more.
If you're considering planting a tree or two this fall, here are some things to keep in mind:
* While spring may be the best time to plant flowers and vegetables, fall is the optimum season for planting trees. In spring, trees don't have enough time to grow deep roots before summer heat hits. Fall means warm soil, wetter weather and cooler air that promote root growth, helping a newly planted tree get established before the weather turns cold and the ground freezes.
* Mid-August through mid-October is the best time to plant a tree in northern and cooler locations. In warmer areas, like the south, you may be able to plant well into November. Talk to your local nursery or an arborist to determine the best planting window where you live. Planting these types of trees in fall means they'll be well established when next spring's growing season arrives.
* Some types of trees need longer to become established, while others need less time. Look for trees that don't require a lengthy growing period before they can withstand harsher temperatures. Options include ash, crabapple, hawthorn, elm, linden, maple, sycamore, pines and spruces. Not sure what to plant? * Trees are prepared for planting in three ways - bare root, containerized and balled and burlap. The best methods for planting trees will be based on how the roots look. Bare root trees have completely exposed roots, and you'll need to soak the roots before planting. Bare root trees tend to grow faster than those in containers. Plants from nurseries often come in containers that need to be removed before you plant the tree. Root balls are typically wrapped in burlap, which must also be removed when you plant the tree.

Cash Prizes for Pumpkin Carving Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park on Saturday and Sunday, October 15th (4pm to 8:30) and October 16th (4pm to 8pm). Groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Minsi Lake Rehab Meeting
On Monday, Oct. 3, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission (PFBC) will host a 6:30 p.m. public meeting at Bangor Area High School, 123 Five Points Richmond Road, to provide an update on reconstruction of the Minsi Lake dam. The meeting is a follow-up to the recent release of more than $25 million in state funding that is dedicated to the repair of five high-hazard, unsafe dams managed by the PFBC.
The Minsi Lake dam in Upper Mt. Bethel Township is classified as a “high hazard unsafe” dam by the Pennsylvania Code, where significant infrastructure damage and loss of life are likely if an uncontrolled breach were to occur. As a high-hazard dam with limited spillway capacity and significant structural issues, Minsi Lake was placed on the PFBC’s top priority list of dams for rehabilitation.

NCC to Hold Annual Peace and Justice Conference
Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its seventh annual Peace and Justice Conference, on Thursday, October 6, on its Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
The keynote address, “Challenging the Culture of Cruelty: Understanding and Defeating Race and Class Inequality in America,” which is also the Cohen lecture, will be given by Tim Wise, one of the most prominent anti-racist writers and educators in the United States, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall. He is the author of seven books, including the highly acclaimed memoir White Like Me: Reflections on Race by a Privileged Son. Copies of Wise’s new book, Under the Affluence: Shaming the Poor, Praising the Rich and Sacrificing the Future of America, will be available at the College bookstore as well as on reserve at the NCC Library.

Prince of Peace Evangelical Lutheran Church and East Bangor United Methodist Community Church will be presenting “Bridges of Hope,” on Thursday, October 6, at 7:00 p.m. at Prince of Peace Church in Johnsonville.
Bridges of Hope is a new program developed by the FaithNet Advisory Board of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) and is designed to promote a deeper awareness of mental health issues within faith communities.
This presentation is being offered for all religious beliefs. It also recognizes the expression by the majority of those affected by mental illness of the importance of the role of their spirituality in their ability to cope with having one of these illnesses themselves or in caring for an ill friend or family member. Individuals, family members, and representatives of all faith communities are invited to participate.
This free program will be facilitated by Rev. Michael Scholtes and Rev. Dave Goss. The presentation will last approximately one hour and be followed by a time of refreshments and fellowship. The 13th Annual Lukie's Fall Festival will be held from 11-5 on Saturday, October 8th, 2016, at Weona Park, in Pen Argyl, PA. All of the proceeds from Lukie’s Fall Festival will be donated to Cure SMA. Cure SMA, is an nonprofit organization with the mission to find a treatment and cure for Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm celebrates their 42nd Annual Harvest Festival on October 8th and 9th, 2016 from 10am to 5pm both days. This year’s theme is “19th Century Tools, Technology & Trends”. When was hand spinning phased out in favor of the new, affordable fabrics available at the mercantile? What new, time saving kitchen gadgets were invented in the 1800s? What new advancements were shown at the 1893 World’s Fair? What were the biggest changes happening in the United States during this period? How did electricity, the telegraph and telephone affect the average person living on farms? We will showcase progress in farming in the 19th century with some of the equipment in Quiet Valley’s collection. This theme will let us explore some of the amazing innovations and improvements that took place during this incredible period in time.

The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church will celebrate their 151st Congregational Anniversary at the 9:15 a.m. worship service on Sunday, October 9th. Dinner With The Dead
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their Annual Haunted Event entitled: “Dinner with the Dead” on Thursday, October 13th @ 7:00 PM. The following historical “ghosts” will share a phantom meal with guests. This year’s ghosts include alias “Jimmie Rose” who ran an extortion and prostitution ring in Bangor Junction and mysteriously disappeared in 1915 along with the “Unnamed Woman”who testified to the Black Hand activities and Jimmie Rose’s murder. They will be joined by “Major General John Sullivan”, the Revolutionary War hero for whom Sullivan’s Trail is named, “Mrs. Daisy Kent”, wife of US Representative Everett Kent, who attended presidential inaugurations in the roaring twenties, and “Mrs. Mildred Jago”, the kindly local lady who was good with numbers. Tickets for this scary event are $10.00 and can be obtained at Heard’s Meat Market, South Main Street, and Bray’s Newsstand, Broadway both in Bangor. CASH PRIZES FOR PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST
Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park on Saturday and Sunday, October 15th (4pm to 8:30) and October 16th (4pm to 8pm).
Groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. A group of themed pumpkins should have at least 6 or more in their display.
There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes range from $100 to $25.00. Please call Sherry Haycock at 610-588-6894 to register your group and theme.
In addition, our scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings. Please save your old stockings (any color and size). You can drop them off at the Borough Building or to Sherry Haycock at The Little Corner Cafe.
Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand.

Learn about bat biology, the species of bats found in Pennsylvania, and how you can help bats in your area. Aura will also give an update on White Nose Syndrome in the state. Registration is required. .

Jacobsburg Historical Society’s annual Market Faire & Rendezvous is a living history encampment representing many periods of American history, including the Pre-Colonial, Colonial, and Fur Trade Eras. Demonstrations and events include primitive archery, blacksmithing, black powder demos, children’s games, a scavenger hunt, a Market Faire of 18th & 19th century traders, and individual blanket traders. The Early American Craft Education Center, the John Joseph Henry House Museum, the Nicholas Hawk Log Cabin Workshop, and the Pennsylvania Longrifle Museum will all be open to the public during this event. Admission $5.00 with free on-site parking. Children 12 and under, JHS members, active duty military and scouts are free. Registration is not required. The Borough of Portland will hold Trick or Treat on Saturday, October 29, from 4 to 6 pm.
Sponsored by the community events committee and refiner’s fire ministry a costume contest will be held and hot dogs, apple cider, and chips will be served immediately following trick or treat at:

Bangor High School's Slater Band Bingo and Tricky Tray: Sunday, November 13 , Doors open at 11:00AM, Games start at 1:00PM at Blue Valley Farm Show. 20 games of bingo, tricky tray, special raffles, 50/50, and door prizes.
