Heathers: the Musical to be Staged at NCC
Northampton Community College (NCC) will present its production of Heathers: the Musical by Kevin Murphy and Laurence O’Keefe on October 20 – 23 at the Lipkin Theatre, Kopecek Hall, Main Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
The play is about a beautiful, brainy misfit who hustles her way into her high school’s most powerful clique.

Jean Taylor has just become a widow. Her husband Glen has been fatally hit by a bus. But Jean is not sad; in fact, she is glad. Glen had been at the center of an investigation into the disappearance of a two-year-old child. As the investigation digs deeper, Jean finds out many dark and disturbing things about her husband. But he always had an excuse, it was an accident, he was being set up, etc.
The story starts in 2010, their present time, and goes back to 2006 when little Bella was abducted, then continues to bounce between 2010 and the ongoing investigation. Glen Taylor was arrested for Bella’s abduction but let go for lack of evidence. The Taylors live their lives with this crime hanging over their heads and it becomes increasingly harder all the time. They are hounded by reporters who camp out on their lawn and police constantly questioning them.
The story goes through many twists and turns as you wonder did he or didn’t he do it. Jean’s reactions don’t give anything away. Is she possibly in on it?
This book grabbed my attention from the very first chapter. I couldn’t put it down. I had to find out what had happened to little Bella. This is a great read for lovers of suspense and mystery.

Masked Daredevil Jumps Into Harbor From 8 Story Building
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- A masked daredevil in California donned a pair of GoPro cameras and filmed his death-defying jump from the top of an eight-story building into a harbor. The video, posted to YouTube by the daredevil known only as 8Booth, shows the man with a handkerchief blocking his face climbing to the top of the apartment building in Newport Beach with a pair of GoPro cameras strapped to his head and hand.
The man stands on the ledge of the roof for a moment before jumping the estimated 129 feet down to Newport Harbor.
The daredevil appears for a moment as if he is going to land on a dock, but he narrowly misses the structure and lands safely in the water.
"Don't try this at home, I'm a professional," 8Booth wrote in the video's description.

What Every New Drive
Needs to Know About Tires
(BPT) - When you get behind the wheel, some actions come automatically, without thinking, such as checking your fuel gauge, using your turn signal and snapping on your seat belt. But even the most experienced drivers fail to follow this key habit that every driver should practice: They don’t check their tires.
If you miss the warning signs that your tires need air, repairs or replacement, you could end up with a tire blowout as your car zooms down the highway. This can lead to loss of control of the vehicle and, ultimately, an accident. According to a study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 12 percent of crashes involving inexperienced drivers are caused by tire-related issues.
So as a new driver, you have an opportunity to start a new habit right away. Check your tires once a month, and schedule a reminder on your phone. It’s worthwhile to take a few moments to pay attention to your tires. Otherwise, if you don’t, your tires will one day force the issue.
If any of these tasks on this checklist are unfamiliar to you, have a trusted family member or friend show you how. Before long, these steps will be almost as effortless as checking the fuel gauge!
Inflation: Learn how to check tire pressure with the help of a simple, inexpensive tool that fits right in your glove box: a tire pressure gauge. First, look in your jamb of the driver's side door for the PSI number, which means pounds per square inch. This tells you how much air your tires need. Remove the cap from the valve stem of your tire and apply the pressure gauge to find out how much air is in your tires. If you need to top them off, find a nearby service station, hopefully one that offers free air!
Wear: Get down and examine each tire, front, back and sides, and use the penny test to check for excessive wear. You accomplish this by placing the coin in the tread with Lincoln’s head pointing downward. If you can see the top of his head, your treads are too worn down to adequately grip the road and it is time for replacement.
Debris: Check your treads for any debris, such as rocks or nails. If you think one of your tires is punctured, yet you don’t hear any hissing, place some liquid soap on the suspected area. If a bubble arises, that's a sign of a puncture and it should brought in.
Bulges: If you see a "bubble" or a bulge in the sidewalls, that is a sign of distress and your tire in danger of failing. Bring it in as soon a possible. This is usually caused by striking a curb or a pothole or some other debris on the road. If you should accidentally hit something, it's a good idea to pull over to a safe place and examine the tires for signs of damage. If you don't see anything, be sure you check again the next time before you get behind the wheel.
Rotation: Front tires will wear more quickly than the rear, thanks to the heavy weight of the engine. That’s why it’s recommended that you rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. Luckily, this can be done very easily during an oil change. All you have to do is ask.

How Classrooms are Better Teaching STEAM Subjects
(StatePoint) The U.S. may be short as many as three million high-skilled workers by 2018, according to National Math + Science Initiative predictions. At Spooky Days on the Farm, held at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on Friday October 28 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday October 29 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Sunday October 30 from 1:00 to 5:00, take a tour of our historic farm and enjoy a look at the stranger side of Quiet Valley. During the daytime it will be more family focused with some not so spooky ghost stories. Also, learn about Halloween Creatures – Facts & Fiction, Halloween songs, and take a horse-drawn wagon ride & pony rides (weather permitting). There will be a children’s craft area and some light refreshments available.

Williams Will Speak on Bloom House
The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church welcomes Ellis Williams as guest speaker at the 9:15 a.m. worship service on Sunday, October 30th. Ellis will be speaking about his efforts with Bloom House, a recovery house for women. Based on the successful “Thistle Farm” model that began in Nashville, TN, Bloom House helps women in recovery from addiction regain a healthy life and healthy engagement with the community. NCC to Hold Youth Chess Tournament
Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship, for children ages 18 and under, on Saturday, November 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at College Center, second floor. The college is located at 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Participants will play five rounds in unrated and rated sections. Trophies and prizes will be awarded as well as random prize drawings.

Photography Exhibit to Take Place at NCC
Trustom Pond, an exhibit of stunning photographs of the Trustom Pond national wildlife preserve in Rhode Island by John Hafey, will be exhibited November 1 through December 16 in the gallery of Communications Hall, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. An artist’s reception will take place on Nov. 11, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the gallery.
According to a review by the New York Times, Hafey’s photographs achieve “effects akin to those of exquisitely wrought aquatints.”
