Spooky Days at Quiet Valley Farm
At Spooky Days on the Farm, held at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on Friday October 28 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday October 29 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Sunday October 30 from 1:00 to 5:00, take a tour of our historic farm and enjoy a look at the stranger side of Quiet Valley. During the daytime it will be more family focused with some not so spooky ghost stories. Iowa rescue dog odd

DES MOINES, Iowa, (UPI) -- Two dogs at an Iowa animal rescue shelter have become an inseparable pair despite a significant difference in their sizes.
The Animal Rescue League of Iowa shared a photo of the canine odd couple as the tiny CC rested on top of the much larger Chewbacca.
"Meet our resident odd couple! Chewbacca and little CC are pretty much always cuddling when we walk by their kennel – and that usually means CC is somehow draped over Chewy," the shelter wrote.
The two dogs lived together prior to being sent to the Animal Rescue League of Iowa, but were put up for adoption when their family discovered their newborn baby had allergies, according to The Dodo.
In addition to constantly cuddling, CC and Chewbacca enjoy taking walks together even sit against each other while riding in the car.
The pair were able to maintain their incredible bond, as they were adopted together by a family with two other dogs and three pigs.

Is your teen ignoring you or
is it hearing loss?
(BPT) - We were all teenagers once. We let health warnings from parents and others wash over us like waves, noticed but forgotten almost as soon as they'd passed, because we figured we'd deal with them when we were older. Unfortunately, the mistakes of youth can lead to long-term or permanent hearing damage much sooner than the average teen realizes.
Typical behavior or signs of a problem
Does the following scenario seem familiar?
Sarah is making dinner when she hears her son, David, come home from high school. She calls, "Hi, honey. Hope you had a good day. Dinner will be ready in a half-hour, OK?"
"Huh? Yeah, hi," he says, and then heads upstairs.
About 40 minutes later the family is seated at the table and Sarah called to David twice. She sends her husband, Brian, to summon David.
Brian returns to the table, where Sarah says, "So? What's the holdup?"
"He says no one told him when dinner was going to be ready."
Sarah heaves a sigh. "I told him when he came home. He never pays attention anymore. Teenagers!"
Like Brian and Sarah, most parents would assume their teen was just ignoring them. But the actual problem might be hearing loss, which is affecting more kids today than ever before.
One out of six teens has hearing loss
"According to a 2014 survey, approximately one in six teens showed hearing loss symptoms often or all of the time, and nearly nine in 10 engaged in activities that could place them at risk," says Donna Grant, Signia Active Kids & Teens program manager. Yet parents whose children always passed every school hearing assessment rarely consider the possibility they've begun losing their hearing.
Dangerous behaviors put kids' hearing at risk
More teens than ever regularly participate in behavior known to cause serious, and often permanent, hearing damage. Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is the most common culprit. Risk factors include:
* Listening to music through headphones or earbuds well in excess of 85 decibels (dB) for longer than 8 hours (the threshold past which damage begins to occur).
* Not using hearing protection - even cheap, over-the-counter foam earplugs - when attending loud events like rock concerts or fireworks. It's important they know how to wear the hearing protection correctly.
* Spending long hours at crowded parties surrounded by extremely loud music and shouted conversations.
* Exposure to potentially ototoxic (ear poisoning) substances like "vape" mist, nicotine, over-the-counter and illegal drugs and alcohol.
What parents need to understand - and help their kids grasp - is that once the delicate workings of the inner ear have been damaged they cannot be repaired. According to Dr. Grant, the fragile hair cells (stereocilia) of the inner ear are finite. Once some or all of them are lost, no currently available treatment can regenerate them. "That means the teen blasting music through earbuds for hours at a time daily can expect to lose hearing now or in the near future, and no matter how much they might come to regret their carelessness, there won't be any way to repair the damage done," Dr. Grant says.
So, don't brush off possible red flags of hearing damage off as typical teen problems. If you suspect hearing damage, schedule an appointment with your child's doctor to have their hearing evaluated. If the physician agrees there is cause for concern, they will likely refer you to a hearing care professional to have their hearing formally tested and for possible fitting of hearing aids.

On Saturday October 15th from 9am - 3pm the Bangor Boys Soccer Team and Bangor Girls Field Hockey Team will be hosting an event partnering with Ford Motors. This event is not a sales event, it is simply a test drive event. Any licensed driver over 18 years of age will be able to test drive a new Ford vehicle. Ford Motors will donate $20 for each person that test drives a Ford car during our event. This is a rain or shine event. Please come to the Bangor Senior High School on Saturday, October 15th, support your local high school teams, and test drive a Ford.
Columcille Tour Saturday
Columcille Megalith Park offers guided tours on the third Saturday of each month will start at 10:00am October 15 with an orientation talk in the standing stone circle by Irish historian and storyteller Tom Egan who will explain the park's mission and the origins of European standing stone monuments. Tom will also give details on the origins and extent of the European Celtic culture with a short explanation about the gods and goddesses of ancient Celtic Mythology. Included is an explanation of who Columcille was in the context of early Irish history and an explanation of how the park's founder Bill Cohea became inspired to create the beautiful place the will be touring.

Stops along the tour will include St. Columba's Chapel, St. Oran's Bell Tower, Signal Hill, Thor's Gate, the Labyrinth, Temple of the Glen and the Cauldron stone. CASH PRIZES FOR PUMPKIN CARVING CONTEST
Octoberfest this year will be held at Bangor Memorial Park on Saturday and Sunday, October 15th (4pm to 8:30) and October 16th (4pm to 8pm).
Groups are needed to enter in the themed, carved pumpkin display. Maybe you own a business and you have a group of employees that would like to get together to carve some pumpkins to enter in the contest. You can pick whatever theme you would like. There are tons of carving themes on the internet. There have been some interesting themes in the past such as Harry Potter, classic cars, Toy Story, Elvis, Peanuts, etc. Do you play a sport? Maybe your group wants to carve pumpkins to show support for that sport? The only cost to enter is that you have to buy your own pumpkins. A group of themed pumpkins should have at least 6 or more in their display.
There will be CASH prizes awarded for the top 3 best group of themed, carved pumpkins. Prizes range from $100 to $25.00. Please call Sherry Haycock at 610-588-6894 to register your group and theme.
In addition, our scarecrow making booth is in need of old stockings. Please save your old stockings (any color and size). You can drop them off at the Borough Building or to Sherry Haycock at The Little Corner Cafe.
Volunteers are needed to help in all aspects of the event from collecting tickets at booths, running booths, helping to set up and clean up the pumpkin displays and working in the concession stand.

Learn about bat biology, the species of bats found in Pennsylvania, and how you can help bats in your area. Aura will also give an update on White Nose Syndrome in the state. Spooky Days at Quiet Valley Farm
At Spooky Days on the Farm, held at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm on Friday October 28 from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Saturday October 29 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm and Sunday October 30 from 1:00 to 5:00, take a tour of our historic farm and enjoy a look at the stranger side of Quiet Valley. During the daytime it will be more family focused with some not so spooky ghost stories. Also, learn about Halloween Creatures – Facts & Fiction, Halloween songs, and take a horse-drawn wagon ride & pony rides (weather permitting). There will be a children’s craft area and some light refreshments available.

Williams Will Speak on Bloom House
The East Bangor United Methodist Community Church welcomes Ellis Williams as guest speaker at the 9:15 a.m. worship service on Sunday, October 30th. Ellis will be speaking about his efforts with Bloom House, a recovery house for women. Based on the successful “Thistle Farm” model that began in Nashville, TN, Bloom House helps women in recovery from addiction regain a healthy life and healthy engagement with the community. NCC to Hold Youth Chess Tournament
Northampton Community College (NCC) will hold its annual Youth Chess Championship, for children ages 18 and under, on Saturday, November 5, from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at College Center, second floor. The college is located at 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township.
Participants will play five rounds in unrated and rated sections. Trophies and prizes will be awarded as well as random prize drawings.

Photography Exhibit to Take Place at NCC
Trustom Pond, an exhibit of stunning photographs of the Trustom Pond national wildlife preserve in Rhode Island by John Hafey, will be exhibited November 1 through December 16 in the gallery of Communications Hall, Bethlehem Campus, 3835 Green Pond Road, Bethlehem Township. An artist’s reception will take place on Nov. 11, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the gallery.
According to a review by the New York Times, Hafey’s photographs achieve “effects akin to those of exquisitely wrought aquatints.”
