Rescue Fire Visits Bangor Library Rita Shook

The Bangor library and Rescue Fire company joined together recently to present a program to in conjunction with fire prevention month. Alan Bilski representing Rescue spoke to a group of children at the library who participate in the library reading program. Bilski first asked the children about smoke detectors. He asked them what the signals coming from them told them. He asked what it meant if the smoke detector made a continuous noise, then he asked them what it means if it just beeps every so often. Later, he explained how they fight fires and what kind of equipment they use. Rita Shook of Rescue dressed in her fire fight equipment complete with an air pack and everything else that she needed to go in and fight a fire. Bilski says that a firefighter could carry as much is 100 pounds. He also talked about how fires that travel up through wall from the basement all the way up through the walls to the roof because the walls don't have anything to block the fire. He said that smoke is a major issue and how that affects people. He said that they they break windows so that the smoke. Another concern for them is when firefighters go into a burning building it is almost pitch black and very difficult to see. He said, imagine walking through your house at night without any light and trying to know where to go, and when to step over toys that are left on the floor or anything like that. He also showed a device with a hok on the end that they use to poke hole in walls to get at the fire and pull plaster to drywall loose. He said that also can use the device to feel for walls in the dark. He said that firemen try to determine the location of a wall and get an idea of the layout of the room. Later Bilsky, left the children inspect the fireman's clothing and he also passed out souvenir hats for them to wear. 5 Easy Ways to 'Charge Up'
Your Recycling Habits
(BPT) - Americans generate about 254 million tons of trash annually, according to the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) most recent figures, and only about one-third of that waste is recycled. For many, one of the main barriers to recycling is not knowing how or where to recycle certain items. For instance, many household cordless products we use every day are powered by rechargeable batteries. These batteries are not only recyclable, but contain materials that are potentially harmful to the environment if thrown in the trash. In fact, at least 20 percent of people are holding on to their used batteries because they know they shouldn't be tossed out - but they don't know where to dispose of them.
You can be part of the solution to reduce waste by learning how to properly recycle the products you use every day. Celebrate America Recycles Day - Tuesday, Nov. 15 - by incorporating the following into your recycling routine.
Check household "recyclable" items.
Aluminum cans and plastic bottles are the most commonly recycled items, but lots of other items found around the house can be recycled, as well. Start recycling plastic bags and paper towels right in your curbside bin. Pin a sign in the kitchen to remind kids they can throw napkins and sandwich baggies in, too.
Designate a separate container for rechargeable batteries from old cordless products and look up the nearest participating collection site so you know exactly where to go when the container is full.
Dump your stash.
Are you a battery hoarder? Do you have a drawer in the house filled with dead batteries? You aren't alone. Establish a monthly routine when you sort through the junk drawer and gather up old electronics and used batteries to drop off while running other errands.
A study commissioned by Call2Recycle, Inc. found that an estimated 6.7 billion batteries were sold into U.S. markets in 2014. Of that number, 30 percent were rechargeable batteries available to be recycled. The Call2Recycle program makes it easy to be a responsible battery user with its network of more than 30,000 drop-off locations including retail stores in your own community that you may already visit regularly, like Best Buy, Lowe's, Sears, Staples, The Home Depot and more. Find a battery collection site near you by visiting www.call2recycle.org/locator.
Buy recycled products.
Recycling gives new life to old products by turning them into new ones. By using recycled materials in their products, manufacturers conserve energy and natural resources and reduce waste in landfills. Checking the labels for products that are recycled and eco-friendly when making a purchase is the easiest way to be a responsible consumer.
Participate in a local community recycling event - or create your own.
Thousands of events are organized nationwide on America Recycles Day to raise awareness about the benefits of recycling and buying products made from recycled materials. Get involved!
Host your own battery-specific recycling drive and invite your community to contribute their battery "hoards." Your neighbors will thank you.
Take the #BeRecycled pledge.
Take the "I Will Recycle" pledge and commit to incorporating more green activities into your everyday routine. Start by selecting a specific item you use frequently and pledge to recycle more of that item in the future. By starting small, there is a greater chance you'll continue throughout the year. Holiday Season At ARTSPACE
As is its tradition, the ARTSPACE Gallery, located at 18 N. Seventh St., Stroudsburg, will open its doors as an art gift shop for the Holiday season. Participation in this year’s store is open to all PoconoArts members. Membership is an affordable $39 per year for individuals or $29 for seniors and artists may join to be in the store.
An application form is available on line at poconoarts.org or in the gallery and the deadline to participate is November 11, 2016. The store opens on November 25 and runs through January 2, 2017, with hours based upon volunteer availability. The PoconoArts staff will manage the store 10AM – 4PM, Monday through Friday, with evening and weekend hours handled by volunteers. Fees for participation are: $30 with a 20% commission for volunteers (min. 4 hour shift) and $40 with a 25% commission for those who do not volunteer. The more volunteers, the more hours the store can be open, resulting in more sales. A special reception and member discount night is scheduled for Thursday, December 1. Brunch With The Author
The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will host their Fall “Brunch with the Author” on Saturday, November 12th @ 10:00 AM. Local author, Anna Maria Caldera will be the featured author. She will be presenting. Sherwood Anderson on Life and Writing. This is Anna’s tenth book and one that pays homage to her favorite author, Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941). Anderson was a chronicler of the common person during the post- Civil War industrialization of America. A recurring theme was the effect of factories on farmers whose connection to the land had been severed. While popular magazines, novels, and screen plays of the day upheld the wealthy as the subjects of greatest interest, Anderson’s literary output focused on the lowly. Ms. Caldara will familiarize the audience with Anderson’s work and his advice to writers.

Pork and Sauerkraut Dinner
Arndt’s Lutheran Church , 1851 Arndt Road, Forks Township, Easton, will hold a pork and sauerkraut dinner on Saturday, November 12th from 4 to 7 pm. We will feature slow cured sauerkraut, pork, mashed potatoes, green beans and homemade applesauce. Homemade desserts with tea and coffee will be available. Adult tickets are $10 and children’s tickets 5-11 are $5; children under 5 eat free.

Bangor High School's Slater Band Bingo and Tricky Tray: Sunday, November 13 , Doors open at 11:00AM, Games start at 1:00PM at Blue Valley Farm Show. 20 games of bingo, tricky tray, special raffles, 50/50, and door prizes. Cornish Presentation at Heritage Center
The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Sunday, November 13th @ 2:00 PM. Speaker for the afternoon will be Mr. Walter Cole who will give a program on the Cornish and their immigration to the United States from Cornwall, England. Topics include Cornwall as a Celtic nation, Cornish characteristics and culture. A power point presentation will include scenes of Cornwall and the world wide “Great immigration from the 1840”s until World War I. The Cornish arrival and influence will be depicted in their contribution to businesses, as inventors and includes their social activities, characteristics, culture and economy. Upon coming to this area they originally settled in Pen Argyl and East Bangor where their impact is still noted. The Heritage Center is also exhibiting “The Cornish” in their Chamber Room showcases. This display will run until March. The event is free and open to the public. The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA.
