Residents and businesses, particularly in central and eastern counties, should use water wisely and follow simple water conservation tips to ease the demand for water. Citizens are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10-15 percent.
Data from the Commonwealth drought monitoring network shows dry conditions persisting in the middle of the state and lack of precipitation in the eastern part of the state have deepened precipitation deficits, resulting in extremely low stream flow and groundwater levels, particularly in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in the Delaware River Basin. The Department of Environmental Protection encourages all citizens to take these steps to reduce their water use:
SLATE BELT WEATHER NOVEMBER 29TODAY - Periods of rain. The rain could be heavy at times. High near 55. Southeast wind 5 to 10 mph becoming south in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New precipitation amounts between 1 and 2 inches possible. TONIGHT - A chance of showers before 10pm, then a chance of showers after 3am. Patchy fog. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 47. Southwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. ![]() The New Approach performed Sunday at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. Take Care of Fragile Skin in Winter![]() (StatePoint) Many people who bruise easily breathe a sigh of relief in the winter, because long sleeves and leggings or slacks can conceal myriad skin issues. But, it’s important to note that while the outside world can’t see what’s going on under the layers, leaving these skin issues untreated may lead to more serious problems down the road.
A healthy skincare regimen is important no matter what season it is, particularly as you age and skin becomes more fragile. “Just like our bones, aging skin can get brittle and break,” says dermatologist, Dr. Helen Torok. “Over time, the skin’s barrier can be broken down due to a variety of factors. Luckily, you can help prevent skin aging issues with an effective year-round skincare routine. While your skin transitions from one decade to the next, taking preventative measures to help maintain a strong, healthy and resistant skin barrier is key.” As skin ages and thins, it can become more vulnerable to insults that might not have bothered it before, manifesting in black and blue bruises on your body. However, by using a product like DerMend Moisturizing Bruise Formula, you can help fragile skin that is prone to bruising and restore skin’s natural barrier that may have been affected by aging, sun exposure or certain medications. This dermatologist-recommend cream contains ceramides, retinol, arnica oil and glycolic acid and is available at Walgreens, CVS, Rite Aid, and Walmart stores nationwide. According to Dr. Torok, “Applying DerMend twice daily to the areas of your skin that are prone to bruising can help improve skin’s appearance and restore it to better health. It’s important to be proactive and consistent with application.” There are also other factors besides thinning skin that may lead to bruising and the breakdown of your skin’s barrier. These include aging, genetics, medication and lifestyle. Sun damage can also play a major role. The sun does not just disappear in winter and neither should your sunscreen and other UV protection. Too much sun exposure over your lifetime can make you more susceptible to skin problems later in life. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin year-round. So, don’t use the winter months as an excuse to take a vacation from your skincare regimen. Start building a strong skin barrier as early as you can and consult your dermatologist about your skin today. The thinning of the skin is a gradual process and early intervention can help you get on the right track. ![]() Children enjoy festivities at Wind Gap's annual tree lighting ceremonies held Sunday. Bennie L. Hart told the Courier-Journal the Kentucky DMV rejected his application to keep the license plate he used for 12 years in Ohio dismissing it as "vulgar and offensive." The American Civil Liberties Union of Kentucky and Freedom From Religion Foundation have joined Hart to assist him in his lawsuit against Kentucky transportation secretary Greg Thomas, stating government officials should not have the ability to deny personalized plates based on religious or political preferences. "Under the First Amendment, government officials do not have the authority to censor messages simply because they dislike them," ACLU-KY Legal Director William Sharp said. "And in this instance, personalized license plates are a form of individual speech equally deserving of First Amendment protection." Hart told the BBC he had no problem registering the license plate in Ohio and and sought the same freedom in his new home. "I simply want the same opportunity to select a personal message for my licence plate just as any other driver," he said. Hart became an atheist at the age of 15 and said the license plate is mean to display no one definition of "God" is more righteous than the other. "Well, there are six definitions of God in the American Heritage Dictionary," he said. "Number five is a very handsome man and my wife says I'm a very handsome man, and nobody argues with my wife."
Home...Prepare your home for holiday celebrations![]() (BPT) - 'Tis the season for big meals, festive gatherings and making memories that will last a lifetime. But hosting friends and family can be a daunting responsibility. In fact, nearly 40 percent of consumers say that entertaining guests is the most stressful part of their holiday season, according to a recent holiday survey. The good news is that there is still time to give your home a refreshed look. Need some inspiration? Check out these stress-free tips, which will leave your guests impressed.
Purge the closets - Heading into the holiday season is the perfect time to clean the clutter from your closets. Not only will you make room for any house guests you may have to put their things, but you'll also free up space for any new clothing you receive as gifts. Plus, you can give back to others by donating any lightly-used items to a local charity. Get ready to repair broken decorations and household items - The fact is that things get damaged during the excitement of the holidays. Use DAP RapidFuse All Purpose Adhesive to fix broken ornaments, tighten loose or creaky chair legs, and repair other broken items around the house before guests arrive. RapidFuse sets in just 30 seconds, is two times more durable than super glues and bonds virtually everything to anything - including wood, metal, glass, plastic, ceramic, and more. It's also the ultimate stocking stuffer for everyone on your list. Refresh common surfaces - Give your home a fresh look and feel by washing walls, cleaning carpets and rugs, scrubbing tiles, and polishing woodwork. And if you have time, painting a room is an easy and inexpensive way to dramatically change the look and feel of your home with color. Stock the essentials - Your overnight guests won't expect four-star hotel treatment, but having basic items in place will make your visitors more comfortable. Essentials include a working light, fresh sheets and pillows, extra blankets, bath towels and a power strip to charge devices overnight. Go the extra mile to impress your guests by leaving out magazines, snacks, hangers and mini toiletries such as mouthwash, shampoo and aspirin. Replace old, unsightly caulk - Throughout the year, your kitchen and bathrooms are exposed to high levels of water and moisture. This can lead to mold and mildew growth, and buildup of dirt and stains on the caulk. Make these areas look new again by removing the old caulk, thoroughly cleaning the area to remove any dirt or residue, and then re-caulking with DAP Kwik Seal Ultra Sealant. Not only does Kwik Seal Ultra repel water, liquids, soap scum, stains and dirt, but is also backed by a lifetime mold and mildew resistance guarantee so the sealant stays looking clean, fresh and new. Relax and enjoy the celebration - Planning a holiday celebration takes time and energy, but don't forget to step back and take in all the good times.Learn more about how DAP products can get your home guest-ready for the holiday season at www.dap.com. Tech...Video Games Teach Kids Life Lessons![]() (NewsUSA) - It's an undeniable fact. Among cash, gift cards and the "toy of the moment," kids want to see video games under the Christmas tree. Rail against it all you want, that's the reality. But take heart, parents, today's video games can teach kids valuable life lessons not learned in a classroom.
For those that scoff at the idea that video games have value beyond hours of mindless entertainment, Sherry Turkel, a professor and researcher at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology says, "think again." "The games demand skills that are complex," Turkel told The Washington Post in an interview. "There is learning how to learn ? there is nothing mindless about mastering a video game." One game that is getting attention for its complexity and teachable moments is Bungie and Activition's Destiny games, a bold world of action and adventure where kids are a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth. If you're a veteran and have followed the game from its inception, you may like the newest release, Destiny: Rise of Iron. If you're a newbie, Destiny -- The Collection, contains five games in one collection, including the newest release from the award winning franchise. And best of all, it's available for just $59.99. Still not convinced? The following skills are just a few underlying themes in the Destiny franchise that teach kids lessons outside of simple distraction: * Astronomy. The game offers a futuristic fictional scenario of our Solar System, where humans colonized other planets but were mysteriously brought to the brink of extinction (with known survivors now living in and defending Earth's last city from alien invaders). * Problem solving and creativity. In Destiny, players not only fend off alien antagonists, but must also solve mysteries, create their own avatar race and class, and complete multiple tasks. * Hand eye coordination. As a shooter-based game, Destiny features combat against an onslaught of alien enemy attacks from all angles. * Team work. The game contains three-player strikes and six-player raids, requiring communication and teamwork. * Socialization. Unlike other similar shooter-based games, Destiny does not have blood, gore, or adult content. Instead, the game is rated T for teen and focuses on sci-fi fantasy and discovery, making it a perfect game for parents and siblings as well. Currently Destiny -- The Collection and Destiny: Rise of Iron are both offered on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One platforms. For more information, please visit www.destinythegame.com.
