Drought Warning In Effect Northampton, Carbon, Lehigh and Monroe counties are now under a drought warning. Residents and businesses, particularly in central and eastern counties, should use water wisely and follow simple water conservation tips to ease the demand for water. Citizens are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10-15 percent.
Data from the Commonwealth drought monitoring network shows dry conditions persisting in the middle of the state and lack of precipitation in the eastern part of the state have deepened precipitation deficits, resulting in extremely low stream flow and groundwater levels, particularly in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in the Delaware River Basin. The Department of Environmental Protection encourages all citizens to take these steps to reduce their water use:

New Approach Shows Today The New Approach Show will be held Sunday, November 27 at 2:00pm in Fellowship Hall at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church at Fourth Street and Broadway, Bangor. Admission $5.00 per ticket. The group will also perform at St. Peter's Church, 7:00pm the same day.
Locals in Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show The 56th annual Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show was held October 28-30 at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. More than 700 youth from all the counties participated in 75 performance classes throughout the weekend. There were over 1200 entries shown by youth that qualified for the show.
The state show is the final competition of the year for 4-H horse members enrolled in performance horse projects. To be eligible for the show, members must advance through qualifying competitions at county and district levels. Events include showmanship, horsemanship, equitation, pleasure, over fences, driving, western riding, reining, trail and timed events. A therapeutic riding division for riders with special needs is also included. There is also a miniature horse division. Results and photos from the show are available on the Pennsylvania 4-H Horse Program website. All class champions in the show were awarded champion ribbons, pewter plates, and embroidered jackets. Reserve champions in each class received a ribbon and a grooming tote donated by Perri’s Leather of Lincoln University, Pennsylvania. All exhibitors in the therapeutic riding division received medallions donated by Hoy’s Trophies and Awards of Export, Pennsylvania. Several sponsors donated items for the silent auction with proceeds to benefit the 4-H horse program. Show management and participants appreciate the continued support and generous donations from Perri’s Leather and contributions from all show sponsors. It is an exceptional accomplishment for any 4-H horse club member to qualify for the Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show. The State Horse Show is a prestigious opportunity for today’s youth to showcase their talents and to culminate the 4-H horse show season. To be eligible for the show, members (and their equine counterparts) must advance through qualifying competitions at county and district levels. Forty plus 4-H members competed in the Northampton County Round-up on August 7th, 2016. The Round-up was a very competitive event, with only 1 to 3 exhibitors in each class qualifying to move on to the District Horse Show. A total of thirty-five Northampton County 4-H members qualified to compete at the District Show, which was held at the Montgomery County 4-H Center on August 27th, 2016. Sixteen of these talented individuals qualified to represent Northampton County at the 2016 Pennsylvania State 4-H Horse Show. State Horse Show exhibitors from Northampton County represent an elite group of horse club members who are considered the top 4-H equestrians in Pennsylvania. Proudly area Northampton County 4-H were: Jenelle Bayer, from Nazareth, driving MA Genuine Bandit in the Pleasure Horse Diving Class and placing 4th. Claire Smith, from Bath, exhibiting her Miniature Horse, Pixie’s Perfect Timing, in Miniature Horse Driving and Miniature Horse Jumping, placing 9th. in this class. Claire Smith also rode Radiant Rendezvous in Hunter Under Saddle Ponies and in Hunter Hack Ponies. Abigail Heald, of Bangor, rode Peter in Pole Bending Ponies, in Cutback Ponies, in Raised Box Keyhole Ponies, and in Barrel Race Ponies. Gretchen Stein, of Bath, riding Don’t Luke So Blue, placed 9th. in Breed Type Hunter Under Saddle Horses. Jenna Keip, of Saylorsburg, riding Cimmeron, exhibited in Lowe Working Hunter Horses, and in Low Equitation Over Fences. Amber Poniktera, of Bath, qualified her Miniature Horse, Peanut Short and Sweet, in Western Grooming and Showmanship and was unable to attend the state 4-H horse show.

Bangor Elks Hoop Shoot The annual Bangor Elks Lodge 1106 sponsored “Hoop Shoot” free throw contest will be held at Washington Elementary Gym on Saturday, December 17, 2016at 1:00 P. M. Jacobsburg EEC Holiday Open House
December 10, 12-4 Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center is hosting its annual holiday open house at the Visitor Center featuring crafts, games, and refreshments. Bring your family along to enjoy the holiday festivities! Our theme this year is “A Home for the Holidays.” Show your support for conservation education and the wildlife that lives in your own backyard! Our partners at the Northampton County Junior Conservation School will be selling kits for different wildlife habitat structures and will help you assemble them at the open house. They will also be selling refreshments to benefit the weeklong summer conservation school. Providing habitat for wildlife is a great way to share your yard and view animal activities during the winter! There will also be a variety of free activities to enjoy including crafts, story reading, a snow play area, and demonstrations of outdoor skills like shelter building. You can also take part in a natural history walk along the Homestead Trail at 12:30 PM with one of our educators. The walk will lead you to the Boulton Historic District where the Jacobsburg Historical Society will be hosting “Christmas at Boulton” for a $5.00 fee. You can take part in these additional festivities before walking back to the visitor center at 3:00 PM with a local historian who will highlight the cultural history along the Henrys Woods Trail. CLEARWATER, Fla., Dec. 21 (UPI) -- A west Florida woman faces felony assault charges after she reportedly attacked her grandmother for denying a Facebook friend request.
Deputies arrested Rachel Anne Hayes, 27, early Thursday for aggravated battery on an elderly person. According to authorities, Hayes slapped the 72-year-old multiple times at a home in Clearwater, Fla. WFLA reports the woman was Hayes' grandmother and that Hayes' arrest affidavit indicated alcohol was a factor in the assault. The attack allegedly stemmed from an argument between the two over Hayes' Facebook moniker. Hayes' grandmother refused to accept her friend request unless the name was changed, according to authorities. Hayes initially left the residence but returned, and in the ensuing argument she slapped her grandmother multiple times at the threshold of a door before the elderly woman was able to retreat inside. Deputies arrived on scene and arrested Hayes, who was released from the Pinellas County jail on $10,000 bond. Hayes' jail records show prior arrests for alcohol related incidents, including a DUI last year, violation of probation in relation to the DUI and a September charge of disorderly conduct for urinating in public. .
Weather...Post-Hurricane Matthew: How to Prepare Your Home for Storms
It's a phrase that comes up after every major storm -- Hurricane Matthew being only the latest -- as homeowners are warned that all too many houses are simply no match for high winds, and that prudence dictates they act to help protect themselves and their property from future storms.
Think those warnings are needlessly alarmist? Probably so did all those New Yorkers who believed that a Hurricane Sandy could never clobber their city. So what should homeowners do, proactively, to increase their odds of beating Mother Nature? Read on. * Clean your gutters. Even in perfect weather, Angie's List says you're looking at a potential "nightmare" if they're so clogged with mounds of leaves, sticks, and other debris that it causes your roof to leak. Factor in a hurricane-strength rainstorm, though, and the very roofing system component meant to control the flow of all that water -- thereby protecting your roof, walls, foundation, and landscape from flooding -- can suddenly be rendered about as useful as a virus-infected laptop. "If you let gutter cleaning go by the wayside, it can cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars," the website cautions. * Reinforce windows. Need we say anything more than flying shards of glass? Didn't think so, which is why the Federal Emergency Management Agency -- in describing windows as "particularly vulnerable" -- recommends springing for either impact-resistant glazing or permanent storm shutters. ( A grief-saving tip from FEMA: "Tape does not prevent windows from breaking.") * Make sure your roof is in good condition. Even though a manufacturer's warranty typically doesn't cover roof damage caused by disasters like hurricanes -- check your home insurance policy for that -- experts date what they call an "upsurge" of interest in stronger roofs back to 2011's Hurricane Irene. News footage of all those battered homes in states such as Delaware, North Carolina and Virginia was that gut-wrenching. "If you are going to replace your roof, consider shingles that have passed the UL2218, Class 4 impact test, the toughest in the industry," says Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence. Joplin especially likes the Timberline ArmorShield II line of shingles from GAF (gaf.com), North America's largest roofing manufacturer, which -- in addition to looking good -- are made with what he describes as "a rubber-like material for enhanced flexibility and durability during extreme weather conditions." Added bonus: Depending on where you live, the shingles may also qualify for significant discounts on that homeowners insurance of yours. * Trim weak tree branches. Not to belabor the dangerous projectile angle, but ask yourself this: Unless you're 5 years old, would you want even Santa Claus crashing into your house at hurricane-strength speeds? And while you're mulling that one over, remember that Matthew might not be it for this year. Both the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific hurricane seasons run through November 30. . Parenting...Initiative Transforms Libraries into Early Learning Centers for Families
(NewsUSA) - Remember your first library card? For many children, the library opened up doors to other worlds and was a haven to study, learn, and explore. And it still is.
While most libraries around the country offer summer reading programs and story time to engage families, one organization is encouraging libraries across the country to do more. The Family Place Libraries initiative is a national program that advocates the idea of the library as a community center for early childhood and family development. "Family Place gives the librarians a comprehensive framework," Kathleen Deerr, national coordinator for Family Place Libraries told Publishers Weekly in an interview last year. "It's about connecting people with everything they need to build healthier, better families." The point, Deerr told the magazine, is to "empower librarians and families." The program began as a collaboration between New York's Middle Country Public Library and the now-defunct, nonprofit Libraries for the Future. The Family Place Libraries model features interactive, hands-on spaces within libraries that focus on the early learning and literacy of children from birth to three years old, while also supporting the needs of parents and caregivers. "When we can share the research about how the program can build strong brains and that children learn through play, people begin to understand that we are creating a rich environment where children can explore and discover, and adults can meet friends and get support," Deerr told the magazine. Currently, the Family Place Libraries network includes more than 450 sites in 29 states, and continues to grow. With its national impact clear, the Institute of Museum and Library Services has thrown its considerable weight behind the program and awarded a $450,000 National Leadership Grant to Middle Country to demonstrate the value of Family Place. With this added support, 25 libraries in eight states have established new Family Place sites. Stacey Aldrich, former state librarian for the California State Library, says that she was introduced to the Family Place Libraries concept through Libraries for the Future and was impressed, adding that, "to watch the model flourish in California has been immensely satisfying." "To see a grown man sitting in a kids' chair, playing with his child, or a grandparent doing a puppet show -- it's special. Forks Tree of Lights Forks YMCA Education Center Hosts Third Annual Tree of Lights Celebration is where individuals of all ages will gather to honor and remember those who make our neighborhoods and lives a better place. December 10, 12-4 Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center is hosting its annual holiday open house at the Visitor Center featuring crafts, games, and refreshments. Bring your family along to enjoy the holiday festivities! Our theme this year is “A Home for the Holidays.” Show your support for conservation education and the wildlife that lives in your own backyard! Our partners at the Northampton County Junior Conservation School will be selling kits for different wildlife habitat structures and will help you assemble them at the open house. They will also be selling refreshments to benefit the week-long summer conservation school. Providing habitat for wildlife is a great way to share your yard and view animal activities during the winter! There will also be a variety of free activities to enjoy including crafts, story reading, a snow play area, and demonstrations of outdoor skills like shelter building. You can also take part in a natural history walk along the Homestead Trail at 12:30 PM with one of our educators. The walk will lead you to the Boulton Historic District where the Jacobsburg Historical Society will be hosting “Christmas at Boulton” for a $5.00 fee. You can take part in these additional festivities before walking back to the visitor center at 3:00 PM with a local historian who will highlight the cultural history along the Henrys Woods Trail. Annual Christmas Cookie Walk Ackermanville United Methodist Church, on Ackermanville Rd., will hold its 2nd Annual Christmas Cookie Walk on Saturday, Dec.10th from 9 am to 11:30 am.
There will be a great number and variety of homemade Christmas cookies. Community Christmas Cantata A Community Christmas Cantata, ”Sing Alleluia! Christ Is Born!,” will be presented on Sunday, December 11 at 3:00 pm in the Sanctuary at Grace United Methodist Church, located at 404 East Mountain Ave. in Pen Argyl, PA.
The choir is composed of singers from various churches in the Slate Belt Area and will be directed by Mr. Walter Cole, senior choir director at Grace UMC and accompanied by Mr. William Stine. Bangor High School Bands Winter Concert The BAHS Bands Winter Concert will be held on Friday, December 16 at 7:30 PM in the M. Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater at Bangor Area High School. The Concert and Symphonic Bands will each present their own portion of the concert with compositions by Steve Reisteter, James Barnes, Chris Bernotas, James Curnow, Pavel Tschesnokoff, and John Moss.
At the conclusion of the program, both groups will unite on stage for a grand finale complete with a Christmas Carol sing-along and our annual performance of Sleigh Ride conducted by a jolly special guest. Tickets will be available at the door for $3 adults/$2 students and seniors. Gold Cards and Slater Band Boosters Membership Cards will be honored.
