Drought Warning In Effect Northampton, Carbon, Lehigh and Monroe counties are now under a drought warning. Residents and businesses, particularly in central and eastern counties, should use water wisely and follow simple water conservation tips to ease the demand for water. Citizens are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10-15 percent.
Data from the Commonwealth drought monitoring network shows dry conditions persisting in the middle of the state and lack of precipitation in the eastern part of the state have deepened precipitation deficits, resulting in extremely low stream flow and groundwater levels, particularly in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in the Delaware River Basin. The Department of Environmental Protection encourages all citizens to take these steps to reduce their water use:

Mayor Bob Donchez, the Citizens Christmas City Committee and the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce are gearing up for the 2016 Christmas City Tree Lighting Ceremony set for November 25 at 4:30 PM on Payrow Plaza. The City of Bethlehem will officially be 275 years-old this Christmas Eve. To honor such a milestone, the Citizens Christmas City Committee (CCCC) and the Bethlehem Chamber of Commerce are breathing new life into the annual Christmas City Tree Lighting Ceremony. Several live performances will take place on Payrow Plaza, including Cunningham & Associates (who’s front man just happens to be a former Mayor of Bethlehem,) DeXperience, Luke DiGiacinto and St. John’s A.M.E. Choir. The musical prelude will be provided by the Freedom High School band who will also be leading the Community Sing. Chief Mark DiLuzio will be emceeing the event, but will hand things off to WFMZ’s own Ed Hanna for a live countdown to light the tree. Six local third graders from Marvine and Freemansburg Elementary will be helping the Mayor turn on the lights to the big tree, and all of the Christmas Lights in Bethlehem. The ceremony will conclude with a visit from Santa Claus. ‘Tis the season for giving! New Bethany Ministries has also partnered with the CCCC to do a can drive at the event. CHICAGO, Nov. 23 (UPI) -- An Indiana-based company showed off its festive "Jingle Johns," re-purposed portable toilets with a musical twist, with a rendition of "Go Cubs Go" in Chicago.
Service Sanitation, based in Gary, took its Jingle Johns to Chicago during the weekend to show off the "singing" toilets by having their light-up faces move in sync to the tune of Steve Goodman's 1984 song, which has since become the Chicago Cubs' official victory song. The company said the Jingle Johns will be singing Christmas carols at Southlake Mall in Merrillville on Black Friday. "When sending out a stale holiday card to our customer base year after year had lost its luster, we took the one thing we know best -- portable restrooms -- and lit them up to celebrate Christmas," the video's description reads. "Well, we did more than that. We also gave these porta potties faces and made them sing Christmas carols. Whether it be the eye-catching light sequences or the snappy lyrical renditions of your favorite Christmas songs, this tradition of spreading good cheer is one that won't disappoin .
Health...Say yes to 'ho-ho-ho' and no to holiday allergies
(BPT) - Shouldn't this be the season for walks in the snow, gift-shopping, family gatherings, ho-ho-ho and mistletoe? So why are you still sneezing? Granted, certain times of year are more allergen-filled than others, but the truth is, allergy symptoms can hit you in any season - even the holiday season! What's more, the holidays bring unique triggers such as mold from evergreens inside your home, dust from long-stored decorations and food allergens in holiday foods. "When you top off holiday allergens with the hectic pace and stress this time of year can bring, you have a recipe for a very sneeze-filled season," says Dr. Stephen Tilles, president of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI). "No one wants to be a Scrooge during the holidays. With some planning and precautions, it's possible to reduce your exposure to allergens and have a more pleasant season." The ACAAI offers these tips to help navigate the many seasonal triggers you may face during the holidays: Dodging decoration disaster Decorations are meant to make the holiday season bright, but holiday adornments can harbor allergens. Mold from Christmas trees can trigger sneezing and wheezing. Aromas from scented candles can cause congestion and affect breathing. Decorations stored in attics or garages from year to year can be a home for sneeze-inducing dust mites. Artificial trees, wreaths and garlands can be an alternative to live decorations that host mold. Remove dusty decorations from storage and clean them outside before bringing them indoors. At the end of the season, store them in sealed containers to keep out dust. Avoid using artificial scents like candles and room sprays that can trigger symptoms for people with allergies and asthma. Instead, fill your home with natural aromas by baking holiday goodies or setting out a dish of unwrapped peppermints. Safer holiday feasting Seasonal foods are as much a part of the holiday season as tinsel and twinkling lights. However, dining as a guest in someone's home can be a problem for people with food allergies. If you have food allergies, alert your host ahead of time. Offer to bring a dish or two that you know will be safe for you to eat. Carefully read labels on prepared foods to ensure they haven't been made with trigger ingredients or in a facility where they might have come in contact with allergens. If you're hosting someone with food allergies, be sure to prepare some allergen-free dishes and clearly label those that have common trigger ingredients like shellfish, tree nuts and peanuts. Avoid travel trip ups Whether you're visiting distant relatives or sharing a holiday meal with nearby neighbors, traveling during the holidays can mean exposure to allergens. Your neighbor's beloved dog or cat may trigger pet allergies, no matter how well she cleans the house. The sheets on your hotel room bed may be washed in a detergent that causes itching, and the pillows may expose you to dust mites. Be sure to pack your allergy medication before traveling. If you're hosting, check with guests before they arrive to see what their allergy triggers are and get their guidance on what you can do to mitigate their exposure to allergens in your home. nnFinally, don't forget that it's also flu season and flu can trigger or make existing allergy and asthma worse. Get a flu shot, and be sure to wash your hands regularly throughout the holidays. If you do experience an allergy or asthma attack, see your board-certified allergist. (BPT) - What does your holiday wishlist include this year? Spending time with friends and family? The latest tech or that best-selling book you've been meaning to read? Maybe it includes plans for a trip in 2017. Whatever is on your wishlist, chances are a holiday-related injury isn't one of them.
No one wants to be hurt during the holidays, yet injuries sustained as part of the season's festivities are actually very common. In fact, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) there were nearly 69,000 visits to doctor's offices and/or emergency departments in 2015 directly due to holiday decorating and decorations. "During the holiday season so many of us get wrapped up in what we have to do, that we don't take the time to do it safely," says orthopaedic spine surgeon Alan S. Hilibrand, MD, a spokesperson for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). "It's up to all of us to never forget safety as we're checking off our to-do list, because you can't enjoy the holidays when you're hurt." To help you prepare for and enjoy your holidays in a safe and enjoyable way this year, the AAOS offers these safety tips. Master the ladder Yes, we've all been up a ladder hundreds of times, but 566,000 Americans were injured due to ladder falls in 2015. Many of these injuries took place during the holidays when outside conditions are more conducive to accidents. Before using a ladder for any task, you should inspect it thoroughly for loose screws, hinges or rungs, and never climb a ladder that is damaged. Even the shortest job can still cause an accident. Once the ladder has been deemed to be in good working order, make sure it is set on level even ground - even if this means removing debris or snow to do so. Then, be sure you have a spotter ready below before beginning your climb. Once your task is finished, climb down the ladder and move it to the next position - don't overreach. Relocating the ladder is just as easy and safer. Pack smart If travel is an essential component of your holiday plans, how you pack and handle your luggage can mean the difference between arriving healthy or injured at your final destination. More than 84,000 people were treated in hospital emergency rooms, doctor's offices and clinics for injuries related to luggage in 2015. Here's how to keep yourself off that list in 2016. Start by packing lightly and resist the urge to drag that single, massive suitcase around. Several, lighter bags will be easier on your body. And when lifting luggage - no matter the weight - stand alongside your luggage and bend at the knees instead of the waist. Grab the handle and straighten up with the luggage close to your body - this allows you to lift with your leg muscles instead of your back. Once you've lifted your luggage, it's important you handle it properly. If you're carrying a duffel bag, resist the urge to keep it on your dominant shoulder for the duration of the trip - rotate shoulders instead. Likewise, if you are using a backpack, make sure both shoulder straps are used and tightened accordingly so the weight is evenly distributed. Finally, when handling a roller bag, don't drag it up the stairs. Pick it up and carry it instead. This simple adjustment will protect your body and the bag. Walking without danger in a winter wonderland Walking is something people take for granted, but during the holiday season when everyone's in a hurry, the opportunity for accident and injury increases. That's why it's important to walk defensively, just as you drive defensively, paying attention to the people, vehicles and objects around you, especially when it's dark. Avoid jaywalking or other potentially dangerous situations. And if you need to switch your attention for a moment - perhaps to make a phone call or talk to a child - stop and step out of the main walkway to do so. If you like to listen to music while you walk, make sure to keep the volume to a reasonable level so as not to block out the outside world. Being able to hear a car horn, for example, may just save your life. The holidays can be an enjoyable time of year when we all look forward to visiting with family and friends, taking some time off to relax and crossing those wishes off our list. As always, to get the community in the holiday spirit, Holiday carols will be sung and some very magical entertainment by Tom Yurasits. Santa Claus will be making a special trip to Pen Argyl to visit the good children of the Borough and will be giving small gifts to all the young children in attendance. All children will have the opportunity to visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, sit on his lap and will get a free gift. Children 9 and under eat for free, children over 9 and adults are $8.00. Monies raised will be used for the annual Operation Warm run by the Club each year which gives new winter coats to needy children of the Slate Belt. Part of the monies also go to supply Dictionaries to the 3rd graders of the Slate Belt as part of Rotary’s Literacy Project. Forks Tree of Lights Forks YMCA Education Center Hosts Third Annual Tree of Lights Celebration is where individuals of all ages will gather to honor and remember those who make our neighborhoods and lives a better place. The event will feature a tree lighting, seasonal songs sung by the center’s children, the Easton Area High School’s Brass Ensemble, Frosty the Snowman and the arrival of Santa Claus.
The event will be held Wednesday, December 7, 2016, 7 PM – 8 PM at Park Plaza, 1800 Sullivan Trail, Easton, PA.x Library Night at Wendy’s The Blue Mountain Community Library will be holding a “Library Night at Wendy’s” Fundraiser on Wednesday, December 7, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm. Wendy’s Restaurant, route 512, Wind Gap, PA will generously donate a portion of all sales that night to the Library in Pen Argyl. The fundraiser will include dine-in, take-out and drive-through orders. Please consider supporting the Blue Mountain Community Library by purchasing a meal from Wendy’s. The money will be used to purchase new books and to meet the many expenses associated with maintaining the building. Membership to the library is free to all residents of the Pen Argyl School District and non-residents may join for a small yearly fee.
A Christmas Tree Fundraiser is currently being offered at the library for anyone wishing to honor or memorialize a loved one or pet. Music at the First UE Church on South Second Street will include the Slate Belt Cantata Choir of Grace United Methodist Church in Pen Argyl singing 4:45 to 5:15 and the Chime Choir of First UE singing from 5:30 - 6:00. The Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church will be caroling in downtown Bangor from 6:00 to 7:00pm. There will also be a drawing for prizes at the end of the evening.
More festivities on Saturday December 10 include the Heritage Center which will be open from 11-3 pm where Perry Morris will be telling old-fashioned Christmas stories. Music at The Broadway Pub from 12-2 pm will feature Jimmy Hummel and Lorri Woodward. Santa will be at Grace on Broadway from 11-2 pm. . A prize drawing will be held at 3 pm. Slate Belt Girl Scouts will be decorating the meters downtown. The Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts will be decorating windows of businesses who choose to have non-profit do their decorating. Bangor High School Bands Winter Concert The BAHS Bands Winter Concert will be held on Friday, December 16 at 7:30 PM in the M. Craig Paine Performing Arts Theater at Bangor Area High School. The Concert and Symphonic Bands will each present their own portion of the concert with compositions by Steve Reisteter, James Barnes, Chris Bernotas, James Curnow, Pavel Tschesnokoff, and John Moss.
At the conclusion of the program, both groups will unite on stage for a grand finale complete with a Christmas Carol sing-along and our annual performance of Sleigh Ride conducted by a jolly special guest.
