Drought Warning In Effect Northampton, Carbon, Lehigh and Monroe counties are now under a drought warning. Residents and businesses, particularly in central and eastern counties, should use water wisely and follow simple water conservation tips to ease the demand for water. Citizens are encouraged to voluntarily reduce their water use by 10-15 percent.
Data from the Commonwealth drought monitoring network shows dry conditions persisting in the middle of the state and lack of precipitation in the eastern part of the state have deepened precipitation deficits, resulting in extremely low stream flow and groundwater levels, particularly in the Lehigh Valley and surrounding areas in the Delaware River Basin. The Department of Environmental Protection encourages all citizens to take these steps to reduce their water use:

James DeLeone Jr, (J.D) of Pen Argyl was planing to attend the police academy when his father and Veteran James DeLeone Sr. of Pen Argyl passed away suddenly this summer just shy of serving nineteen years with the Hellertown police force. To help make J.D.s dream come true some of his father’s brothers in blue came up with an idea to raise money toward a police academy fund. These associations raised $3,950 in a combined effort to help put J.D. through the police academy in memory of his father. Contributing police associations include Slate Belt Regional Police Association, Washington Township Police Association, Tatamy Borough Police Association, Lower Saucon Police Association, Upper Nazareth Police Association, Forks Township Police Association, Lehigh County Deputy Sheriffs association, Boscov’s loss prevention department and personal friends. James Sr (Jim) joined the army at the age of seventeen. He re-upped twice in the Army National Guard. While enlisted, he worked on helicopters. He also spent time as a civilian raising a family, and joined the Hellertown Police Force in October of 1997. Sometime later he joined the Navy as a Military Police officer and was once again called for duty after the 9/11 attacks and was stationed in Virginia. He then finished that tour and joined the Air Force, once again as an M.P. He was called for active duty during the Afghanistan War and was stationed in Dover, Delaware. He finally retired from his military career around 2012. J.D. graduated from Northampton Community College with an Associate's degree in General Studies in 2012. He went on to ESU where he graduated in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice. He is currently working security at the Sands in Bethlehem, and trying to save money toward going to the police academy. 6 Holiday Friendly Home Design Features
(BPT) - Sponsored Ad Content by Clayton
Whether you’re shopping for a new traditional, manufactured or modular home or just attempting a renovation project, it’s important to consider the functionality of key spaces like kitchens and living rooms. These most-frequented rooms will host meals, family gatherings, movie nights, homework sessions and holiday celebrations, so they need to include features that facilitate all these uses and more.
If the layout of your current apartment or house isn’t working for you as well as you would like, it can seem even more unlivable during the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. As you consider which home elements will be the best investment for your money, the home experts at Clayton suggest keeping these features in mind:
* Kitchen island — With the exception of galley kitchens, virtually every kitchen can benefit from an island. Kitchen islands are the perfect spot for serving Christmas morning breakfast, setting out dishes for a Thanksgiving buffet, food prep for a New Year’s celebration or a staging area for an all-night wrapping party after the kids are in bed. Utilize generous under-island cabinet space to store large items like a crock pot or large serving bowls. The island also makes a great space to add additional seating if you are expecting guests.
* Farmhouse sink — Also called apron sinks, farmhouse-style sinks are perfect sinks for holiday entertainers and very trendy in new homes. Larger and deeper than standard under-mount or top-mount sinks, a farmhouse sink gives you plenty of room for washing large kitchen items. The baking sheets you used to whip up a batch of holiday cookies, the big pot where you simmered chili and even the racks from your oven will fit easily into a farmhouse sink. What’s more, farmhouse sinks give any kitchen a comforting, homey, yet elegant look.
* Sweeping technology — With all the cooking and entertaining you’ll be doing in the kitchen, crumbs and spills are inevitable. The last thing you want to do with a houseful of guests is wrestle with a full-sized vacuum cleaner or risk having a hand vac prove inadequate for your needs. Sweeping technology like a central dirt-removal vacuum system can make cleanup much quicker and easier. The central dirt-removal vacuum system unit installs at the base of a kitchen cabinet, and you simply use a broom to move debris in front of the unit. A tap of the toe turns the vacuum on, and the unit sucks the dirt inside a pull-out pan. You can open the drawer and ditch the dirt immediately, or leave it for later while you entertain guests. Central dirt-removal vacuum systems are an optional kitchen appliance in select Clayton home designs.
* Fireplace — Few home features are more appropriate for the holidays than a fireplace that will add warmth and ambiance to any celebration, no matter how large or small. Gas log fireplaces set a festive atmosphere with the flick of a switch. It’s possible to install one in virtually any style home, from site-built to manufactured, and some versions can even work on interior walls of a home. Many homes will even feature a hand-laid stone or tile fireplace for a stylish, sophisticated look.
* Pet-friendly features — Four-legged friends are part of the family — and every holiday celebration. Homebuilders now offer a variety of features to make life more pleasant for pets and easier for homeowners. Clayton Built™ homes can be customized with a pet dish drawer that allows you to hide feeding dishes when they’re not needed. A windowseat or hideaway cubby can be the perfect escape spot for pets who feel overwhelmed by holiday activities and guests. And a built-in grooming station in a mudroom or utility room makes it easy to primp your pet before holiday guests arrive.
* Single-level construction — If you’re thinking of getting into a new home in time to celebrate the holidays, remember that a single-level design and an open floor plan will make holiday entertaining easier and more enjoyable. Having all rooms on one floor ensures guests never have to climb stairs to find a restroom or go to bed. Plus, an open floor plan allows you to work in the kitchen and interact with guests — or keep an eye on kids — in the living room.
Choosing a manufactured home can be a smart, affordable way to get all the holiday-friendly features you want — and be in your new home before the New Year. Because a manufactured home is constructed indoors, bad weather won’t delay the construction schedule. A manufactured home can be completed and set up on-site in a matter of weeks. Time Saving Kitchen Hacks
for the Holidays
(BPT) - No matter how big or small the group, gathering with loved ones over a delicious meal is a holiday season essential. However, if you've offered to host the event, panic is likely to set in as you realize the amount of work it's going to take to cook a memorable meal for friends and family. Fortunately, with some tips and tricks, cooking a feast doesn't have to be stressful. Just use these time-saving kitchen hacks and you can enjoy more time savoring the season with your guests and less time in the kitchen.
Prep side dishes early: Prepare as much as you can in advance. In the week leading up to the event, chop, boil and blend whatever you can to save countless hours in the kitchen. You'll cut down on stress and have enough time to visit with guests as they begin to arrive.
Use multitasking methods: What if you could make a quick dinner in one simple step? With meals that taste like homemade and use high-quality ingredients, Marie Callender’s(R) allows you to serve signature holiday meals without the extra work. The Vermont White Cheddar Mac & Cheese will have guests thinking you slaved away in the kitchen, but all you had to do is open and close the oven.
Buy cooking mesh: From blanching to boiling, you can quickly run out of stove-top space when cooking a holiday meal. To save time and space, use cooking mesh so you can boil several foods at once in the same pot of water while keeping items conveniently separated.
Fluffy mashed potatoes: Whipping up a big batch of mashed potatoes? To avoid dense spuds and save time endlessly mashing, use a pinch of baking powder when whipping. The baking powder reacts with the heat from the potatoes to create tiny air pockets and, ultimately, fluffy mashed potatoes.
Utilize the slow cooker: Slow cookers are one of the most useful tools when hosting a holiday meal. You can cook early and keep virtually anything warm, including gravy, mashed potatoes or drinks like hot chocolate and cider. Need more slow cookers than you own? Borrow from friends or hunt down some at a bargain price at second-hand stores.
Grate frozen butter: Baking a special dessert for the holidays? Rather than waiting for frozen butter to thaw or risk melting it in the microwave, use a cheese grater instead. Hard butter thaws quickly when shredded.
Keep drinks outdoors: Fridge space goes fast when hosting a holiday soiree, so instead of worrying about where you're going to fit cans and bottles, put them outside instead. The winter chill will keep them cool and you won't have to give up precious fridge space. Just hang a sign so guests are directed to the right location to quench their thirst.
Clean as you go: Rather than cooking everything at once only to end up with an unbearable amount of dishes, try cleaning as you go. By multitasking you'll end up with less mess at the end when all you want to do is sit down with a slice of pie and visit with loved ones.
Embrace simplicity: Following a big day of entertaining, give yourself a break by re-purposing leftovers and weaving in quality, already-prepared meals from your freezer. Marie Callender’s Turkey Pot Pie makes a perfect next-day meal or midday snack with its premium turkey breast, assortment of vegetables and flaky, made-from-scratch crust.

Brunch With The Author
The Friends of the Bangor Public Library will host their Fall “Brunch with the Author” on Saturday, November 12th @ 10:00 AM. Local author, Anna Maria Caldera will be the featured author. She will be presenting. Sherwood Anderson on Life and Writing. This is Anna’s tenth book and one that pays homage to her favorite author, Sherwood Anderson (1876-1941). Anderson was a chronicler of the common person during the post- Civil War industrialization of America. A recurring theme was the effect of factories on farmers whose connection to the land had been severed. While popular magazines, novels, and screen plays of the day upheld the wealthy as the subjects of greatest interest, Anderson’s literary output focused on the lowly. Ms. Caldara will familiarize the audience with Anderson’s work and his advice to writers.
The event is free, but donations will be accepted. Registration for attendance is required by calling the library at 610-588-4136. The library is located at 39 South Main Street, Bangor, PA. For additional information contact: Karen Brewer @ 610-588-8615.
