Hahn Grammy Award Quarterfinalist The Bangor Area School District is proud to announce that High School Band Director, Mr. Eric Hahn, has been announced as a quarterfinalist for the National 2017 GRAMMY Music Educator Award.
This award recognizes current educators (kindergarten through college, public and private schools) who have made a significant and lasting contribution to the field of music education and who demonstrate a commitment to the broader cause of maintaining music education in the schools. Mr. Hahn is one of only 290 music educators nation-wide who have earned this distinction this year, and one of only 16 in Pennsylvania. He was previously honored as a quarterfinalist for this award in 2015. Semifinalists will be announced in September.

Free Bicycling Engraving Event Throughout the year, the Bangor Block Watch conducts meetings and neighborhood canvasses to identify community issues and promote crime prevention. A concern echoed by many residents during the Block Watch canvasses was theft of both children and adult bicycles. In an effort to assist the community and authorities in dealing with this prevalent issue, the Bangor Block Watch will be hosting its annual Operation ID bicycle engraving event on May 14th, at the Bee Hive at 197 Pennsylvania Avenue from 11–2 pm and is free to the public.
Bangor residents are encouraged to bring all of their bicycles to be engraved with a unique identification number. Numbers will be kept in a database and provided to the Bangor Police Department. This will help in identification should the bicycle become stolen or missing. The goal of the Operation ID bicycle engraving event is to aid authorities in identifying and returning missing or stolen bicycles to their rightful owner. HELSINKI, Finland, (UPI) -- A Burger King in Finland has made the idea of enjoying a Whopper in a sauna a reality by opening the world's first Burger King spa.
The Helsinki restaurant features the Burger King-themed spa, designed by Interior Designer Teuvo Loman, which can seat up to 15 people. The spa features Red and Blue accents to match the restaurant's logo, a 48-inch television screen and towels featuring Burger King branding. A shower, locker room and toilet are also attached to the spa. According to Metro, the spa's website describes it as 'perfect for social gatherings or work.' In addition to the sauna and the showers, the spa also features a media lounge with a 55-inch television and a Playstation 4 video game console.
Lawn Care..A Guide to Saving Water and Your Lawn
(StatePoint) No longer must you choose between your lawn and saving water. Experts say there are ways to save both water and money that won’t hurt your turf.
“We often see sprinklers watering sidewalks and drives, running during rain, or sending water down the drain from leaky heads,” says Josh Friell, Ph. D, senior agronomist of The Toro Company’s Center for Advanced Turf Technology. “The good news is there are simple, cost-effective actions homeowners can take to save up to 30 percent in outdoor water usage alone.” Friell recommends these lawn-care watering tips: First Things First Most timed sprinklers water in the early morning, without homeowner attention. At the beginning of the season, run each zone briefly during daylight hours to see how the system is operating. Look for broken lines or damaged sprinkler heads, and inspect spray patterns to ensure water isn’t wasted. When to Water Experts suggest watering deeply and infrequently. This helps wet the entire root zone and encourages deeper root growth, which helps the lawn better tolerate mild to moderate drought. It is best to water in the early morning around 4 to 5 a.m., as this gives lawns time to absorb the moisture and prevents evaporation due to daytime heat. How Much to Water During summer, your grass should receive between 1 to 1 1/2 inches of water weekly, including natural precipitation. Water requirements vary by turf variety, local weather conditions, and site conditions such as shade. Your local university extension office can be a good source of information to assist in understanding local conditions. The total water applied can be determined by placing a rain gauge or empty tuna cans around your yard prior to an irrigation cycle. Another option is to install a wireless soil moisture sensor, like the Toro Precision Soil Sensor, which fits almost any controller and installs in minutes. This helps eliminate guesswork by continuously monitoring soil moisture levels to prevent the system from overwatering. Limit Water Intake Friell says a general rule to keep in mind is that turfgrass does better when managed on the dry side rather than wet. When soil is constantly wet, grass roots are deprived of oxygen and may become more susceptible to disease. When in Drought Avoid lawn mowing during heat and drought. Lawns under such stress have limited ability to recover from mowing and can be damaged even more. Instead, mow after a rainfall or irrigation day. Finally, maintaining higher mowing heights will help turf tolerate the heat and drought of summer. Doing so also requires less frequent mowing, which means more time to enjoy your lawn! Budget...Most College Kids Manage Money Well
(StatePoint) Conventional wisdom says young people have a lot to learn when it comes to managing money, but the reality is most American college students are handling their finances carefully and conscientiously, according to “Majoring in Money: How American College Students Manage Their Finances,” a new national study from Sallie Mae and Ipsos, an independent global market research company.
Taking the Right Steps Students are taking the right steps when it comes to managing money, the study revealed. More than three-fourths of college students pay bills on time, and six in 10 never spend more money than they have available. In addition, college students are putting money aside each month. More than half save at least some money every month, and 24 percent report having an emergency fund. Responsible Credit While most college students make purchases with debit cards and cash, more than half have at least one credit card. Roughly six in 10 students report their primary reason for getting a credit card was to build a credit history. The report also finds that the majority of students with credit cards are using them responsibly and paying the bill themselves. Specifically, 63 percent pay the balance in full each month, and 73 percent pay the bill without assistance from a parent or other adult. Roughly seven in 10 report an average monthly balance of $500 or less. “Having a credit card doesn’t necessarily mean students are overspending,” said Julia Clark, senior vice president, Ipsos Public Affairs. “The reality is they are demonstrating sound reasoning and thoughtful decision-making, and they are managing their payments effectively.” Understanding Good Credit The majority of college students know having a good credit record can help them qualify for different types of credit and improve their access to favorable interest rates; and the majority of students understand what positive and negative credit behaviors are. “Many of these young people grew up in the wake of a financial crisis and, in turn, have adopted behaviors that promote sound credit management,” said Raymond J. Quinlan, chairman and CEO, Sallie Mae. “At the same time, they’re eager to learn more.” The report also revealed that college students would benefit from additional education about specific credit topics, including how interest accumulates and how repayment behavior and credit terms affect the cost of credit over time. In fact, when asked to answer multiple choice questions on those topics, only 31 percent of students answered all three questions correctly. September 23Bethlehem Celtic Fest 2016BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania, — The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will reach its 29th year of presenting the largest free Highland Games and Celtic festival in North America during the weekend of September 23rd through the 30th. This year brings back old Celtic Classic favorites such as Timlin & Kane, Seven Nations and the Glengarry Bhoys as well as new features like Low Lily, Moxie Strings, Barrule & Calan. From bagpipes to bodrahns, fiddles to whistles, Bethlehem will be filled with foot stomping Celtic music all weekend.
A wide variety of Scottish, Welsh and Irish bands and genres will take stage this September.
