Soy, It's a Miracle
Last year, U.S. farmers harvested a record-setting 83.5 million acres of soybeans. So, where do they all go?
1. Snacks
Some soybeans are picked early, sprinkled with sea salt and served up as a tasty snack better known as edamame. Others are used as key ingredients in energy bars and protein smoothies. Then there's soy oil, soy flour and soy nut butter. When you add them all together, Americans spend an estimated $4.5 billion on soy foods each year.
2. Household and industrial products
But soybeans do more than satisfy our hunger. They're also used to make crayons, carpets, candles and cleaning products. Their oil provides a renewable, nontoxic alternative to petroleum. Ditto for paints, inks, lubricants, upholstery, furniture, flooring and other building materials.
3. Animal feed and fuel
Considering their multitude of uses, is it any surprise that soybeans are known as agriculture's "miracle crop?" Soybeans are classified as legumes, so they're in the same category as peanuts, peas and lentils. Each little bean packs a powerful protein punch - up to 38 percent per pound. That makes them an extremely efficient and nutritious animal feed for poultry, hogs, beef and other farm animals. Soybeans are also used to make fuel for diesel engines - soy-based fuel uses renewable feedstock, and it burns cleaner than fossil fuel.
Here's where the miracle comes in: Corn and other crops need a steady diet of nitrogen fertilizer to grow strong and healthy. Soybeans don't. They cook up their own nitrogen, thanks to a special bacteria found in their root systems. It's like each plant comes with its own grocery store, kitchen and chef.
Small pest, big problem
Unfortunately, these underground eateries also attract a host of uninvited guests, including soybean cyst nematodes. These are microscopic pests that burrow into soybean roots. The males of this species have a quick meal and move on. Females, on the other hand, stay longer. They eat and eat and eat, until their entire heads are embedded in the root. And then they eat some more.
Soybean cyst nematodes, or SCN for short, may start small, but they cause big damage. They cost U.S. soybean growers an estimated $1.5 billion each year. Part of the problem facing farmers is that SCN is difficult to detect and even harder to control. Researchers at Syngenta, an agribusiness company, are working on solutions. They're breeding stronger NK Soybean varieties with built-in resistance to SCN, and they've developed Clariva Complete Beans seed treatment, a combination of separately registered products. Part insecticide, part nematicide, part fungicide, Clariva Complete Beans helps protect soybean roots from a whole host of creeping, crawling, damaging pests, including SCN.
That's good news for the American consumer, whose passion for soy keeps growing. So bake a cake, light a candle, relax in your favorite easy chair or read the latest best-selling novel in celebration of National Soy Foods Month. Chances are, you'll be enjoying products that soybeans helped make possible.

Seven Historic Good Luck Charms Explained
But there's a difference in how generations think about luck. In fact, millennials are the most likely to say they need their lucky token on job interviews, while boomers are more likely to bring their symbol of luck to a casino. There are so many popular good luck charms throughout history, but have you ever wondered how those items came to be viewed as lucky?
Here's the story behind some common good luck charms throughout history:
Four-leaf clover
According to legend, the luck of the four-leaf clover goes back to Eve, who supposedly carried one out of the Garden of Eden. Others believe in their power because they're simply so rare to find. For every 10,000 three-leaf clovers, there is only one four-leaf. The four leaves represent faith, hope, love and luck.
Horseshoe
One of the most common symbols of luck, horseshoes were first considered lucky by blacksmiths. People believed that fire and iron had magical powers and would ward off spirits of the past. But be careful with how you hold or display your horseshoe - it's only good luck if the ends point upward.
Pocket lighter
Created in 1932, the Zippo Windproof Lighter has long been considered a lucky talisman. One instance of a Zippo Windproof Lighter coming in handy is the story of First Lieutenant Harold Fritz. During the Vietnam War, Fritz was leading a column of heavily armored vehicles through Quan Loi when they were ambushed by North Vietnamese fighters. Thrown from his vehicle, Fritz led a point-blank charge on the enemy and was hit several times by shrapnel and small-arm rounds. After being evacuated from the battlefield, he found the lighter his wife had given him as a going away present. He was shocked to find that the lighter, which he kept in his left breast pocket, had stopped a bullet that otherwise would have killed him. Fritz received a Medal of Honor from President Nixon in 1971 and, to this day, he still carries his Zippo wherever he goes.
Rabbit's foot
These days, you can get a rabbit's foot in a vending machine or as an arcade prize, but using a rabbit's foot as a good luck charm dates back to the Celtics in 600 B.C. However, the Celtics were very specific with this superstition. It had to be the left hind foot of the rabbit in order to be considered lucky.
The color green
Green isn't just the color of money; according to the survey, it's also believed to be the luckiest hue. Green is a symbol for positive change, health, growth and vitality. In Irish folklore, if you catch a green-clad leprechaun and then set him free, you'll be blessed with treasure.
The number seven
Nineteen percent of those surveyed see the number seven as the luckiest charm of all. This number plays an unexpected role throughout nature and our daily lives, leading many to believe in its good fortune. From the seven days in the week, seven colors of the rainbow, seven notes on the musical scale, the seven seas to the seven continents, we may not even realize how present it is.
Penny
You know the rhyme: "Find a penny, pick it up, all day long you'll have good luck." But where did this originate? The penny superstition dates back to ancient times, when people believed metal had the power to protect them from evil spirits. Once people began to use coins as currency, those who had more coins were wealthy and their money symbolized good fortune.
Whether you believe in luck or not, it's fascinating to know the stories behind each of these famous good luck charms. To find your very own token, visit zippo.com/luck.
Former Brinks Manager Steals Quarters
Dennis has agreed to plead guilty to the charge and pay back the full amount to Brink's, which reimbursed the bank.
"What Mr. Dennis may have thought was a nickel and dime theft was, in the end, the equivalent of a major bank heist," FBI Special Agent in Charge Roger C. Stanton said. "Now, he will be a convicted felon who must repay all the stolen money."
The Alabama DOJ reports that Dennis entered the Federal Reserve Bank facility on an off day to take four empty quarter bags and skids, returning them full of beads with enough quarters to cover the top of the bags.
He stole a total of 784,000 quarters – weighing an estimated 9,800 pounds – between Jan. 1 and Feb. 20, 2014.

Technology can be wonderful!
garywilliamsdmd.com
I know sometimes new technologies can be frustrating and leave us questioning whether “progress” is worth the hassle. But, that is not the case with intra-oral digital scanners. We have been using our digital scanner at Family Dental Care now for 3 months, and the results are amazing.
Sure, it’s pretty “cool” technology, and it has been totally comfortable for patients. No gagging going on! And the turn around time is much shorter. All of these are pluses, but here is the real benefit… the accuracy and fit of what we are making.
I can comfortably predict a great fit of your new crowns, splints, Invisalign aligners, retainers, and anything else we scan for. That makes it worthwhile.
It’s one thing to restore your mouth to health, but I want, you want, and you deserve to rest assured that what is placed in your mouth is the best possible fit known to dentistry.
Digital scanning is here to stay at Family Dental Care. Feel free to ask us about our scanner. Garywilliamsdmd.com.
