Monday Showers Ease Dry Conditions Showers beginning Monday afternoon and continuing into the evening dropped .58 inches of rain in the Slate Belt. Although that’s not a great amount of rain, it was the most we’ve had in the past 18 days. During that time only .14 inches of rain fell leading to dry conditions.
Green lawns that have been turning partly brown in the past week or so, got needed rainfall to restore some lost moisture. More showers are forecast today. Rainfall for June, including yesterday’s showers, stands at 2.68 inches. Normal for the month is 4.65. Since January we are 2.40 inches below normal.

Mt. Bethel Inn Presentation The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly presentation 700pm, Thursday, July 14. Speaker for the evening will be Kara Muschock who will speak on the history of the Mt. Bethel Inn, known now as TK's. A log tavern stood on the site before the township of Upper Mt. Bethel was established in 1787 and it was the site of the first elections and community meetings. The present inn was constructed in 1855 and the main stage coach route ran behind this site with 611 to the front. It was also the site of the first post office. Scavello to Host Free Vision Screening for Children Pen Argyl – State Senator Mario Scavello will host a free Vision Screening for children on Thursday, July 14 from 10 AM to 3 PM at his Pen Argyl District Office (2 North Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl). The screening is hosted in partnership with Lions Kidsight USA.
Experts have estimated that as much as 80% of learning is visual and, if vision problems go undetected, they may become permanent by age seven. Children will be referred to an eye care provider for a comprehensive vision examination based on the results of the screening. Tasty Tuesdays is back at Trinity Lutheran Church! Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Bangor community this summer. Tasty Tuesdays will begin on Tuesday, June 14 and will run until August 12. COLUMBUS, Ohio, (UPI) -- Ohio's Columbus Zoo and Aquarium was placed on a brief lockdown during the weekend when a young black bear escaped from its enclosure. The zoo said Joanie, a 7-month-old black bear weighing only about 50 pounds, climbed a 14-foot fence in her enclosure about 11:15 a.m. Saturday and even scaled the electric fence, which was live, to reach freedom outside of the bear habitat.
Officials said Joanie, who has only lived at the zoo for a couple of months, was sedated with a dart about 11:30 a.m. and taken to her sleeping quarters. "The lockdown was quickly downgraded and only the cub's immediate area was considered on lockdown. All guests were moved to safety during the lockdown procedure. The zoo's Emergency Response Team went into immediate action to assess the situation, formulated a plan to tranquilize and secured the animal," the zoo said in a statement following the incident. "With young animals, just like kids, they're into things, they're looking for something, they're testing everything," Lewis Greene, the Columbus Zoo's senior vice president of animal care and conservation, told WBNS-TV. "In this particular case, Joanie was quite athletic." Greene said Joanie was captured at the wolverine exhibit, nearly 40 yards away from her enclosure. The official said there were no injuries reported during the escape and Joanie is recovering well from her enclosure. The bear exhibit was closed for the remainder of the day Saturday and was expected to remain closed pending an investigation.

(BPT) - What fun would a backyard barbecue be without special people to share it with? Your guests are as important to the fun as great food and good weather. However, there's one type of "guest" everyone can do without this summer - bugs. Stinging and biting insects can wreck even the best backyard gathering, unless you take steps to keep them away.
With increasing concern regarding Zika virus in the U.S., everyone's least-favorite summer pest can be more than just an annoyance; mosquitoes may post a serious health risk, especially to pregnant women. What's more, while no one wants to get a mosquito bite, stings from wasps, hornets or yellowjackets may be more concerning for people with insect allergies as a sting can be life-threatening. Keeping insects away from your outdoor gathering is an important way to ensure everyone stays healthy and enjoys the party.
The National Pest Management Association (NPMA) offers some tips for how you can keep pests like mosquitoes, ants, flies, hornets, wasps and other stinging and biting insects away from your party and guests this summer:
Prep for the party
* Guests will be coming in and out of the house throughout the barbecue, so be sure doors close securely. Check screens for holes and repair any you find; small holes in screens can allow insects to get inside.
* If possible, plan to serve food and beverages indoors. Food left sitting outside on a patio or picnic table is more likely to attract insects, so reserve outdoor space for eating, entertaining and fun.
* Check around your backyard to ensure there's no standing water. Birdbaths, wading pools, tire swings, children's toys, garden ponds and even puddles that collect in low spots in the yard can all serve as breeding locations for mosquitoes.
* If you'll be entertaining outdoors at dusk and after dark, have plenty of insect repellent on hand for guests. Choose one with an EPA-registered active ingredient like DEET or Picaridin. While mosquitoes that carry Zika virus are active throughout the day, most mosquitoes are active at dusk and dawn, so consider using fans to keep insects away from outdoor seating areas.
During the party
* Strong fragrances from shampoo, perfume and candles can attract stinging insects like yellowjackets and wasps. They're also attracted to the aroma of food and drink. Suggest guests avoid using scented items before the backyard party. Serve beverages in clear plastic cups; aluminum cans and plastic bottles provide hiding spots for stinging insects.
* Use sealed coolers and containers to protect all food and beverages. The containers will not only keep bugs out of your food, they'll reduce the aroma that can attract insects.
* If spills occur, wipe them up immediately from tables and other surfaces to reduce the chance they'll attract ants or other insects.
* Clear trash away from your entertaining area immediately, and store it in sealed receptacles away from the entertaining area. Rinse all beverage bottles and cans before sealing them in the closed recycling or trash container.
Post-party cleanup
* After a good meal, and surrounded by friends, you may be tempted to let the dishware and utensils sit for a while as you chat with guests. Resist the temptation. Take utensils and dishware indoors right away to reduce the chance the smell of leftover food will attract unwanted insects.

The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause.

Bangor High School Class of 1966 Reunion
The Bangor High School Class of 1966 will hold their 50th Reunion on Saturday October 8, 2016 @ the Delaware Water Gap Country Club (Wolf Hollow). Cocktails and Class Picture will be at 6:00 PM with Buffet Dinner to follow @ 7:00 PM. The night before, on October 7, the class will attend the Bangor High School football game and sit as a group. They will then have a get together at Liberty Fire Hall after the game.
In honor of this being the 50th Reunion, the class will be the guests at this years Bangor High School Graduation and will sit as a group. Time and definite date still to be determined.

First Town To Trail Jamboree Join the First Town To Trail Jamboree celebrating Wind Gap's designation as an Appalachian Trail Community. Watch Boy Scout Troop 33 with Eily Leicht Scout Master demonstrate outdoor skills and conduct guided mini hikes on the Appalachian Trail.

Scavello to Host Free Vision Screening for Children Pen Argyl – State Senator Mario Scavello will host a free Vision Screening for children on Thursday, July 14 from 10 AM to 3 PM at his Pen Argyl District Office (2 North Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl). The screening is hosted in partnership with Lions Kidsight USA.
Experts have estimated that as much as 80% of learning is visual and, if vision problems go undetected, they may become permanent by age seven. Children will be referred to an eye care provider for a comprehensive vision examination based on the results of the screening. To make an appointment for a child aged six months through six years, please call Senator Scavello’s Pen Argyl District Office at 610-863-1200. Mt. Bethel Inn Presentation The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly presentation 700pm, Thursday, July 14. Speaker for the evening will be Kara Muschock who will speak on the history of the Mt. Bethel Inn, known now as TK's. A log tavern stood on the site before the township of Upper Mt. Bethel was established in 1787 and it was the site of the first elections and community meetings. The present inn was constructed in 1855 and the main stage coach route ran behind this site with 611 to the front. It was also the site of the first post office. BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania, — The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will reach its 29th year of presenting the largest free Highland Games and Celtic festival in North America during the weekend of September 23rd through the 30th. This year brings back old Celtic Classic favorites such as Timlin & Kane, Seven Nations and the Glengarry Bhoys as well as new features like Low Lily, Moxie Strings, Barrule & Calan.
