Slate Belt Animal Control Officer Hired

Sue Henn has officially been named as animal control officer for the Slate Belt. The announcement was made at a news conference held Thursday morning at the Slate Belt Chamber of Commerce office by Scott Parsons, Executive Director of the Slate Belt Council of Governments (COG). Henn, who has been on the job for few days, will handle issues throughout the Slate Belt area. However, before you call 911 about the barking dog that keeps you awake all night, this is not part of her job description. This is a police matter. Her job concerns stray dogs and cats that have become a nuisance or need help. If that is your concern, then you should contact your municipality which will get the animal control officer involved. This used to be a police issue, now a trained animal control officer can deal with this and all of the related issues, giving police officers more time for other matters. Of the 100 -115 calls expected for cats and dogs, cat problems are different from dogs. “Cats are more of an issue in boroughs,” said Parsons. “Problem is, there are no state laws for cats, so we need to draw up ordinances and then we have something to act on. “ Parsons also says that cats are more “costly” because feral cats need to be spayed and neutered. Nontheless, the program is moving forward. “The cooperation has been great,” said Parsons. “The police departments are excited about it.’ Henn’s job will be to capture the animal and take it to a pen. Currently, there are two pens in Plainfield Township and one each in Pen Argyl and Washington Township. The animal can be held for 48 hours. Although most are claimed by the owner within that time. If no one claims it, the animal is sent to a shelter. The process, however, is time consuming and costly. “This program is a work in progress.” Parsons emphasized. “ By no means are we dead in the water and have our program and this is what is going to happen.” The Slate Belt COG received a $10,000 grant from the Northampton County Community Investment Partnership Program for animal control, associated costs and issues. COG is also asking for a 50-cent per capita fee from each Slate Belt Municipality, but not all have agreed to do that yet. COG members include the boroughs of Bangor, East Bangor, Pen Argyl, Portland, Roseto and Wind Gap, with Plainfield, Washington, Lower Mount Bethel, and Upper Mount Bethel townships. Bangor, Pen Argyl, Plainfield and Washington Townships and Wind Gap are going forward with the program while some of the others have concerns. Roseto, according to Parsons, wants to pay per use rather per capita.

Please join mycologists Dr. Rick Bortnick and Laura Weishaupt at Jacobsburg for a relaxed and informative look at fungi and their vital roles in the ecosystem. From predators to partners, fungi are often unseen, but crucial players in forest ecosystems. An indoor slide show will provide an introduction to different kinds of fungi and explain what they do in the forest. Then we'll head outside to see it all in action. We'll have lunch and wrap up with some discussion about books and answer any questions. This program is not about foraging for edibles. Bring a hand lens if you have one. Amateur Radio Field Day Members of the Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club will participate in the 24-hour national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, Saturday, June 25, 2 p.m. – Sunday, June 26, 2 p.m. at Louise Moore Park, off Country Club Road in Easton. Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
For over 100 years, Amateur Radio — sometimes called ham radio — has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cell phone or the Internet. Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network. Over 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day in 2015. “It’s easy for anyone to pick up a computer or smartphone, connect to the Internet and communicate, with no knowledge of how the devices function or connect to each other,” said Sean Kutzko of the American Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur Radio. “But if there’s an interruption of service or you’re out of range of a cell tower, you have no way to communicate. Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. That’s the beauty of Amateur Radio during a communications outage.” “Hams can literally throw a wire in a tree for an antenna, connect it to a battery-powered transmitter and communicate halfway around the world,” Kutzko added. “Hams do this by using a layer of Earth’s atmosphere as a sort of mirror for radio waves. In today’s electronic do-it-yourself (DIY) environment, ham radio remains one of the best ways for people to learn about electronics, physics, meteorology, and numerous other scientific disciplines, and is a huge asset to any community during disasters if the standard communication infrastructure goes down.” Anyone may become a licensed Amateur Radio operator. OAK RIDGE, N.J., (UPI) -- Pedals the famous bipedal bear has reemerged in a New Jersey neighborhood after a long lull in sightings led to fears he hadn't survived the winter. Joey Esposito posted a video to Facebook showing Pedals walking on his hind legs through an Oak Ridge neighborhood Monday morning.
The video shows Pedals wandering around neighboring yards while walking on his back legs due to his missing right front paw and injured left front paw. Esposito told ABC News that Pedals appeared to be "pretty healthy." "He didn't seem like he was going to harm anyone," Esposito said. "I didn't want to get too close, but he actually looked pretty good." Pedals had previously been last spotted Dec. 21 in West Milford and his long absence from the public eye led to fears that he hadn't survived the winter. Lawrence Hajna, a spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Agency's Division of Fish and Wildlife, had recently asked the public for help locating Pedals after the lack of springtime sightings. The Division of Fish and Wildlife has thus far declined to have Pedals moved to a sanctuary, with officials saying the bear is doing well in the wild. They said the decision would be revisited if Pedals is seen to struggle or fall ill. Hajna said officials expect Pedals will continue to thrive in the wild. "We expect him to make it through this winter. The bear has an indomitable spirit," he told NJ.com.

BAHS School Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive
The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause.

Blue Mt. Community Library Fundraiser
The Blue Mt. Community Library will hold its first Wine Tasting Fundraiser on Friday, June 24 at The Blue Ridge Estate Vineyard and Winery. The event will be held from 4:00-6:00 pm and includes 5 wine tastings, a tour, a wine glass from the winery, and hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. Amateur Radio Field Day Members of the Delaware-Lehigh Amateur Radio Club will participate in the 24-hour national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise, Saturday, June 25, 2 p.m. – Sunday, June 26, 2 p.m. at Louise Moore Park, off Country Club Road in Easton. Since 1933, ham radio operators across North America have established temporary ham radio stations in public locations during Field Day to showcase the science and skill of Amateur Radio. This event is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.
For over 100 years, Amateur Radio — sometimes called ham radio — has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cell phone or the Internet. Field Day demonstrates ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network. Over 35,000 people from thousands of locations participated in Field Day in 2015. “It’s easy for anyone to pick up a computer or smartphone, connect to the Internet and communicate, with no knowledge of how the devices function or connect to each other,” said Sean Kutzko of the American Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur Radio. “But if there’s an interruption of service or you’re out of range of a cell tower, you have no way to communicate. Ham radio functions completely independent of the Internet or cell phone infrastructure, can interface with tablets or smartphones, and can be set up almost anywhere in minutes. Rescue Dog Meet and Greet Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, at Tractor Supply, Rt. 940, Mt Pocono.
Safe Haven will have many adorable dogs available for you to meet and get to know. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit prior to adoption. Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. Pen Argyl – State Senator Mario Scavello will host a free Vision Screening for children on Thursday, July 14 from 10 AM to 3 PM at his Pen Argyl District Office (2 North Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl). The screening is hosted in partnership with Lions Kidsight USA.
Experts have estimated that as much as 80% of learning is visual and, if vision problems go undetected, they may become permanent by age seven.
Children will be referred to an eye care provider for a comprehensive vision examination based on the results of the screening.

For those who wish to observe wildlife along the way please bring binoculars. This event is sponsored by Jacobsburg Environmental Education Center, Wildlands Conservancy, and Waste Management. Bethlehem Celtic Fest 2016
BETHLEHEM, Pennsylvania, — The Celtic Cultural Alliance (CCA) will reach its 29th year of presenting the largest free Highland Games and Celtic festival in North America during the weekend of September 23rd through the 30th. This year brings back old Celtic Classic favorites such as Timlin & Kane, Seven Nations and the Glengarry Bhoys as well as new features like Low Lily, Moxie Strings, Barrule & Calan. From bagpipes to bodrahns, fiddles to whistles, Bethlehem will be filled with foot stomping Celtic music all weekend.
A wide variety of Scottish, Welsh and Irish bands and genres will take stage this September. The complete performer line up can be found at www.celticfest.org/entertainment
Celtic Classic 2016 will also honor its traditional festival features. In addition to the U.S. National Highland Games Championship come an assortment of food styles and beverages, Celtic retail merchants, competitions and dance.
