New Pastor at Flicksville UCC
The Rev. Kenneth Hess was called as Pastor of Flicksville United Church of Christ on May 22, 2016 and began his pastorate on Sunday, June 5, 2016.
A graduate of William Paterson University and Drew Theological School, The Rev. Hess will bring a great deal of experience to Flicksville UCC having served as Director of Christian Education at the Community Church of Cedar Grove, NJ and after hearing the call into parish ministry, served as pastor at St. Paul’s UCC Garwood, NJ. He is currently a part-time chaplain for Compassion Care Hospice in New Jersey. Founded in 1849, the Flicksville UCC congregation warmly welcomes the Rev. Hess and his wife Jane into their church family. Summer worship - 10 AM.

PTRR Deadline Extended The deadline to apply for the state’s 2015 Property Tax/Rent Rebate program is being extended from June 30 to Dec. 31. Eligible participants can receive a rebate of up to $650 based on their rent or property taxes paid in 2015.
The program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians who are 65 years or older, widows and widowers 50 years or older, and those 18 years or older with disabilities. WINSLOW, Ark., An Arkansas woman said she had the fright of her life when she was driving on the Interstate and a 4-foot snake fell from the dashboard to her feet.
Kelly Swisher of Winslow said she was making her daily commute Thursday on Interstate 49 when the slithering reptile dropped from the bottom of her dashboard and onto her feet. "As soon as it landed on my feet, I felt it," Swisher told KFSM-TV. "It was rough and scaly. As it slithered across my feet, it was the nails-on-a-chalk-board kind of thing." Swisher said her memories of the ensuing events are blurry. "I do not know if I had my hands on the steering wheel or not," Swisher said. "I am not the most flexible person in the world, but I can guarantee my knees were up next to my ears." The motorist said she was overcome with fear of the reptile. "I don't remember much about it. Panic kind of took over. The only thing I know is god had his hand on me and on my car," she told KNWA-TV. Swisher called 911 for help. "[The dispatcher] asked me to repeat my request and I told her I had a snake in my car," she said. Swisher said the snake disappeared back into her dashboard, leading her to attempt to drive the vehicle off the interstate. "That did not work out either," Swisher said. "Here he comes, and he wound up in the back seat of my car." The Washington County Sheriff's Office dispatched animal control officers who had to dismantle the glove compartment to capture the reptile, which was identified as a nonvenomous rat snake. "God had his hand on me. He protected me. He protected my car. That is all there is to that," Swisher said.
Entertainment...'A Sunday Horse': This Year's Heartwarming Horse Story
(NewsUSA) -- A talented young woman and her horses defy the odds to rise to the top of the show jumping world in a new family film, "A Sunday Horse," scheduled to debut in 2016.
The movie is inspired by the true story of Debi Connor, a rider and trainer from Ocala, Florida. The story is set in the present, although the main events occurred in the 1980s. The star of the film, Debi Walden (her maiden name), has drive and talent, and dreams of becoming an Olympic champion in the sport of show jumping. Unfortunately, she lacks the money and resources to train for the top tier of the sport and she is unable to afford the expensive horses needed for Olympic-level competition. Debi defies the odds, doing farm chores in exchange for training and earning the emotional and financial support of an African-American entrepreneur with similarly humble beginnings. She buys several horses with no formal jumping skills, trains them herself and starts taking the Grand Prix jumping world by storm. When Debi and her horses make the U.S. Olympic team, her dream is within her grasp, but an accident during a training exhibition leaves her comatose and paralyzed. When she finally comes to, Debi sells her top prize-winning horse Touch of Class to her co-trainer, who takes the horse to the Olympics and wins a pair of gold medals for the USA. Despite a dire prognosis of never riding again, Debi perseveres through months of painful rehabilitation and enters the Governor's Cup at the Virginia Horse Show, where, despite her ongoing struggles with paralysis and seizures, she competes against her old horse Touch of Class and wins. A "Sunday Horse" features a well-known cast, including Nikki Reed (Twilight), Ving Rhames (Mission Impossible), Ryan Merriman (Final Destination), and screen legends William Shatner (Star Trek) and Linda Hamilton (Terminator). The director is Vic Armstrong, renowned stunt coordinator and second unit director on hundreds of films including Indiana Jones films, Terminator 2, Mission Impossible 3, and six James Bond movies. Armstrong has a personal connection to the story: He is a lifelong horseman whose father coached Great Britain's equestrian team for five Olympic Games. Transportation.....The Uberization of America?
(NewsUSA) - "The New Serfs." Doesn't sound as warm and fuzzy as that other sobriquet -- "the sharing economy" -- used to describe the Uberization of America, does it? But that's what critics say workers are increasingly becoming thanks to a business model that's totally redefining what it means to be employed in a tech-enabled, service-driven, 21st-century economy.
Think about it: If you drive for an app-based, ride-hailing service like Uber, Lyft or Sidecar -- or maybe do stuff like fix leaky faucets, say, by signing on with TaskRabbit to connect with buyers with long to-do lists -; odds are that app-enabled "gig," as it's called, doesn't include all or some of the following:
Uber was handed a huge defeat last September when U.S. District Judge Edward Chen in San Francisco granted class-action status to a lawsuit by drivers that, according to the Wall Street Journal, "could have sweeping implications" for anyone following the same business model. The core issue is: Are those behind the wheel "independent contractors" (as Uber claims) or "employees" entitled to a wide range of costly benefits (as drivers claim)? "It will allow thousands of Uber drivers to participate in this case (and) challenge their misclassifications as independent contractors, as well as to attempt to recover the tips that Uber advertised to customers are included in the fare, but are not in fact distributed to the drivers," attorney Shannon Liss-Riordan, who's also representing Lyft drivers in a separate case, told the press while vowing to try to expand the suit nationwide. Not boding well for Uber, which is planning to appeal the ruling: The California Labor Commission a few months earlier ruled that Uber driver Barbara Ann Berwick was, indeed, an employee in a claim involving expenses. "We've always said that all providers of ground transportation should be held to the same standard," said Gary Buffo, president of the non-profit National Limousine Association(Limo.org). "That applies to drivers' benefits, too." And for those who think they're immune to Uberization, don't be so sure. A Bloomberg columnist recounted the increased "buzz" around the idea of turning white-collar work, which traditionally commands higher paychecks, into less expensive services that can be summoned as easily as a town car. "An Uber for legal advice seems like a pretty good idea," she wrote.

June 16Heritage Center 2016 Preservation AwardsThe Slate Belt Heritage Center is proud to announce the recipients of its' 2016 Preservation Award. Through this presentation the Heritage Center acknowledges those individuals who have performed exemplary acts toward promoting and preserving the culture and heritage of the Slate Belt. Candidates may be an individual or a group and can be self nominated or by another party. The three winners and their respective categories are as follows:
Anna Caldera The Initiative Award is presented to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in promoting and preserving the Slate Belt Heritage through In-Kind actions. This years recipient is Ms. Anna Caldera. Ms. Caldera played an integral part in editing all seven (7) books in the Heritage Center's "Ethnic Heritage Series". She volunteered, working countless hours advising and making adaptations along with the authors to produce prominent literary publications without thought of compensation. She has shown patience and guidance every stop of the way, making the ethnic project a huge success. Additionally she has co-authored "A Great Miracle Happened Here": The Jews of the Slate Belt and has also authored a book on the "Trail Trees of the Native Americans". Gage Parachos The Architectural Award is presented to an individual who has performed an exemplary act in saving or conserving a historic building, place or artifact where restoration is authentic to preservation. This years recipient is Mr. Gage Parachos. Mr. Parachos completed, as an Eagle Scout project, the restoration of the historic Portland Jail. Mr. Parachos repaired, plastered and sealed the stone walls, rebuilt the wood flooring, restored the jail windows and original door (found buried in the dirt) and placed artifacts to enhance the replication. He documented his work from beginning to end with a scrapbook of pictures. He followed up the project with clearing the grounds, making the walkway accessible and did exterior painting which enhanced his work. Joe DeFranco The Special Focus Award is presented to an individual who has shown exemplary actions in saving or conserving tradition or a body of knowledge: that individual who contributes to educational information via documentation. This years recipient is Mr. Joseph DeFranco. Mr. DeFranco has always enjoyed telling stories to friends, reading articles about Italy, food magazines and cookbooks, along with being surrounded by his grandparents who had the greatest influence on him. All of this has inspired him to write vignettes for the Blue Valley times, Slate Belt Magazine: The Belt and Beyond and subsequently publishing his own book "Growing Up in the Butcher Shop". Mr. DeFranco strived to keep the old customs alive so that the younger generation will have an idea as to his way of life growing up in the sixties, in a butcher shop and also for the older generations to reminisce days gone by. His efforts to conserve the Italian traditions via of educational information and documentation of his families heritage has earned him this reward. A ceremony to honor all three achievements will be held on Thursday, June 16th at 7:00 PM at the Heritage Center located at 30 North 1st Street, Bangor, PA The event is free and open to the public. June 24Blue Mt. Community Library Fundraiser The Blue Mt. Community Library will hold its first Wine Tasting Fundraiser on Friday, June 24 at The Blue Ridge Estate Vineyard and Winery. The event will be held from 4:00-6:00 pm and includes 5 wine tastings, a tour, a wine glass from the winery, and hot and cold hors d’oeuvres. Tickets are limited and are on sale at the library for $20 per person and must be purchased in advance. Your ticket will automatically be entered in a drawing for a Gift Basket of a bottle of wine, wine glasses and snacks.
