T.K.s , Mt. Bethel Inn, Rum’s Corner Nexusby Larry Cory
If you dine at T.K.s Family Restaurant in Mt. Bethel or simply drive by everyday, you may not be aware of the fact that the building has a history extending back into the 1700s. Current T.K.s bartender Kara Muschock presented an interesting history of T.K.’s recently at the Slate Belt Heritage Center, which was the former Mt. Bethel Inn. A log tavern stood on the site before the township of Upper Mt. Bethel was established in 1787 and it was the site of the first elections and community meetings. The present inn was constructed in 1855 and the main stage coach route ran behind this site near Jacoby Creek Road with Route 611 to the front. The inn was also the site of the first post office. Michelle Tramontano’s husband Antonios Kotretsos purchased and renovated the building on North Delaware Drive restaurant in 1997. When an anonymous customer brought a map to T.K.s showing a building at the site as far back as 1815, the owners wanted to know more about the history. If the map is correct, 2015 was the 200th anniversary for the building that today houses a family-style American restaurant. The current stucco finch covers the outside walls and hides a Mount Bethel Inn sign and painted eagle that offered a glimpse into the building’s past. An original stone fireplace in the middle of the restaurant is one of the few pieces of the the building’s history. T.K.s is no longer an inn, but a dozen or more rooms with bedding and other comforts still exist upstairs today. Muschuck says that its “kind of scary” to go upstairs to get items out of storage. One of the former owners of the inn loved the color pink. Her home was pink, her car was pink, and Muschuck says that there is still a pink sofa and pink room on an upper floor. Prior to the Civil War the area surrounding the Inn was known as Williamsburg which were part of the famous William Penn walking purchase. There were also few other buildings, a tavern, and possibly a school. The Frutchey family may have owned the land as far back as 1800. Records show that the Frutchey family moved to America from Germany in the 1700’s. Several Frutcheys are listed on TK’s deed history and the name is still common in the Slate Belt. Before Williamsburg, the area was known as Rum’s Corner. It got its name around 1800 at the celebration of a new store by a man named Jake Dietrick. A worker, named Andy Collings broke a bottle of rum on the corner of the building and christened it “Rum Corner.” In the early 1900s, the Coss family owned the inn. The family also ran a car dealership next door. Reservations were available at the Inn by telegraph for $4.00 per day. The Mensch family owned the building prior to the current owners.

BAHS School Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause. The names of contributors will be acknowledged in concert programs during the 2016-2017 school year. RAROTONGA, Cook Islands, July 28 (UPI) -- Residents of the Cook Islands captured footage of an unsettling encounter with a particularly large creepy-crawly -- a giant centipede.
The video, filmed July 15, shows the enormous centipede crawling through the yard on its many legs while two people watch. "Giant centipedes live all over our property in the mountains of Rarotonga," the filmer wrote. They said daytime encounters are rare. "They are nocturnal and typically keep to themselves, but every once in a while we have a run-in with one, as is seen here."

Tasty Tuesdays is back at Trinity Lutheran Church! Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Bangor community this summer. Tasty Tuesdays will begin on Tuesday, June 14 and will run until August 12. Every Tuesday the bag lunch will be available and will contain a sandwich, fresh fruit, chips, a healthy snack bar and a drink. Bangor High School Class of 1966 Reunion The Bangor High School Class of 1966 will hold their 50th Reunion on Saturday October 8, 2016 @ the Delaware Water Gap Country Club (Wolf Hollow). August 11Gravestone Preservation Presentation The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, August 11, At 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be historian John O’Brien who will be giving a talk on gravestone and monument preservation and repair. Topics being covered are cleaning, the reading of gravestones and using mirrors. He will also discuss the different types of repairs he has undertaken. Mr. O’Brien is an amateur conservator who repairs gravestones and monuments as a hobby. He has repaired several hundred monuments/gravestones and mainly works in in the Warren and Hunterdon county New Jersey area. The presentation will include pictures from the cemeteries in Lebanon , Stewartsville and Seller cemeteries.
John is a member of the Association for Gravestone Studies and the New Jersey Chapter Chairperson. He is a life member and past President of the Warren County Historical Society. He is also on the Board of Trustees for the Greenwich Presbyterian Cemetery, the Swackhammer Cemetery, team member of the Friends of the Weller Cemetery and an active member of the Hunterdon County Cemetery Committee. Joe Emrick (R-Nazareth) and Marcia Hahn (R-Bushkill Township) are teaming up with the Lehigh Valley Aging in Place Coalition to host “Your Aging Parents and You – Beginning the Important Conversation of What We Want as We Age.” The seminar is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Holy Family Club, 515 W. Mauch Chunk St., Nazareth.
“We’re hosting what might best be referred to as an ‘aging roadmap’ for middle-age adults and their parents,” Hahn said. “A panel of professionals will discuss a number of different issues Pennsylvanians should be taking into account as they and their parents grow older,” Emrick added.
