Fifth Annual St. Roch's Mass Former parishioners and friends of the closed St. Roch’s Catholic Church, Second Street, West Bangor will participate in the celebration of the Fifth Annual Mass on Saturday, August 13, at 11:00 a.m. The Reverend Monsignor Vincent P. York, Pastor of St. Elizabeth Roman Catholic Parish, will be the celebrant.
The Diocese of Allentown has granted permission to hold the Annual Mass in August each year since 2012. The liturgy and music for the August 13 Mass will include readings and hymns in honor of St. Roch, the Patron Saint. Attendees will also participate in reading the Prayer to St. Roch.

PITTSBURGH, -- Park officials in Pennsylvania confirmed that a woman and her son discovered a piranha while fishing at a local lake.
The Allegheny County Parks Department shared photos of the fish which officials say flipped back into the water after being taken off the hook. "We received a call, and subsequently pictures, from a woman and her son who were fishing yesterday at North Park Lake, who thought they had caught a piranha. With the help of the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission, we were able to confirm that it was a red-bellied piranha," Parks Director Andrew Baechle said. The Parks Department stated that the fish would pose the greatest threat to humans, as they attempt to remove the sharp-toothed fish from a fishing line. Baechle said that the fish was likely released into the lake by a former owner and discouraged residents from releasing animals into the lake. "It's unfortunate that someone released this fish into the lake, but it's also an opportunity to remind members of the public that animals and pets should never be brought to the parks and let go," he said. "It's not good for the park, the animals or our residents."

But could you imagine the reaction if that was said to vacationers by hotel staff? People wouldn't be able to check out fast enough. Unfortunately, travelers will never be given such a clear warning about bed bugs in real life, but there are steps they can take to prevent an encounter while enjoying a trip away from home.
Bed bugs, which feed on human blood and often leave behind red, itchy welts, continue to be a major concern, especially as travel season heats up and incidents rise. In fact, a recent study conducted by the National Pest Management Association (NPMA) and the University of Kentucky found that 99.6 percent of pest control companies treated for bed bugs in the year prior. Pest control companies also reported treating for infestations in a variety of locations, including five-star hotels, retail stores, single-family homes, apartments, movie theaters, hospitals, schools and even on public transportation. These biting pests are seemingly found everywhere, and no one wants to cuddle up with them in a hotel room, or worse, bring them back home. So, what can you do to avoid bed bugs while traveling? Use this helpful advice from NPMA: * Upon check-in, inspect the entire room before unpacking. Use a flashlight to search behind the headboard and in the crevices of furniture, looking for the bugs themselves or shed skins. Pull back bed sheets and check mattress seams and box springs for pepper-like stains that may be evidence of bed bug activity. * If you suspect an infestation, notify management and change rooms immediately. Be sure the new room is not adjacent to or directly below or above the possibly infested room. * Keep suitcases off the beds and in plastic bags or protective covers to prevent the bugs from latching onto luggage. * Once back home, inspect all belongings before bringing them into the house. * Wash all clothes in hot water and dry on an extra-hot dryer setting. * If you are concerned that you brought bed bugs home, contact a professional pest control company to thoroughly inspect the property and if needed, offer guidance on treatment options. Tasty Tuesdays is back at Trinity Lutheran Church! Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at Broadway and 4th Streets in Bangor, will once again offer the free bag lunch program to children, families and individuals in the Bangor community this summer. Quiet Valley’s Heritage Craft Day
Stroudsburg (PA) – Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will feature the 10th annual Heritage Craft Day on Saturday, August 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Heritage Craft persons will demonstrate traditional craft skills of the 1800s throughout the day. There will be hands-on opportunities for visitors who wish to try out some of these crafts for themselves.
Demonstrations such as spinning, weaving, wheat weaving, bobbin lace, horn work, pottery and blacksmithing will take place. The purpose of Heritage Craft Day is to provide a greater awareness of these historic folk crafts that were essential to everyday living in previous generations. This is a wonderful chance for individuals, families and children to explore the exciting world of traditional crafts. The crafters are under tents in case of rain. The schedule is subject to change. A presentation of traditional toys and games will take place and visitors will be able to try out various samples for some old fashion fun. A children’s area will offer the younger set an opportunity to craft a simple toy or rag doll for themselves. Bonnie Scott, our master puppeteer, will teach children puppet making. Heritage Craft Day, a part of Quiet Valley’s summer “Art from the Heart” series, is supported by a Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Project Stream grant. Heritage Craft Day is included in the regular admission price of $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 3 – 12 and children two and under are free. Farm tours are available throughout the day on Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The bake oven will be in operation. There will also be wagon rides for a small fee, weather permitting.
