The four cats Venkman, Ray, Egon and Gozer were brought in to Empirical Brewery in December to help keep the brewery's pest problem under control. "The traditional rodent control solutions weren't working for us, so we turned to Cats at Work," the brewery's website states. "After a brief acclimation period, the cats were free to roam around the brewery." Empirical Brewery brought the cats in from Tree House Humane Society and offered them a home in exchange for their work. "We built them a house, we feed them, we change their litter and in exchange they offer the best pest control solution around," they wrote. According to an FAQ, the cats help to protect the sterility of the grain and ultimately the integrity of the brewing process. "Our grain is stored in heavy sacks, which the cats protect from rodents but never eat themselves. From the grain crusher, to the grist case, to the mash tun, to the boil kettle, to the fermenter, to the bright tank, everything is part of a closed system," the post states. "This is necessary to maintain a nearly sterile environment for the yeast to properly ferment the beer without bacterial interference." Venkman, the head brewery cat, also has his own Twitter account which chronicle's the cat's adventures.
Real Estate...Tips to a Stress Free Move (BPT) - Does the prospect of moving have you buzzing with excitement? Or are you left with worries about packing and clutter? This moving season, an estimated 40 million Americans will move or relocate, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.Moving is an exciting time, creating opportunities to start fresh and reinvent your life. But whether you’re moving by yourself or uprooting your entire family, moving presents a number of stress-causing challenges. Staying organized and planning ahead will be your best armor against the moving blues. Ease your transition with some of these professional organization tips:
Make a plan Your calendar will be your best friend throughout the moving process. As soon as you know your moving date, schedule moving help and/or a truck rental. Then, block out time in your calendar for each step of the move, including packing, payment due dates and paperwork. Schedule a day or several to walk through your home, opening every cabinet and drawer, to get rid of what you don’t need or use. There’s no sense in paying to move items you don’t want in your new home. Clear the clutter Did you know that 91 percent of Americans say they have kept an item because they feel guilty getting rid of it? That’s a lot of leftover gifts, family heirlooms, greeting cards and rarely worn clothing just lying around. And when you have a home filled with disorganized clutter, you can spend hours searching for misplaced items. A move is a great opportunity to go through that stuff and make the tough decisions about what to keep and what to toss. If you're downsizing or staying at a smaller place mid-move, you might need a temporary storage solution to keep some of your belongings. You can easily find and compare prices on storage units, as well as full-service storage services, at SpareFoot.com. Stock up on supplies From cleaning supplies to boxes, to labels, packing tape and scissors, you’ll want to make sure you have all the tools you need. Set up a “moving station” somewhere in your current home where you store all your moving necessities. Be sure to select the right boxes for moving your different types of belongings. For example, you can find kitchen packing boxes that have double-wall construction which is better suited for breakables, like dishes, china, crystal and glassware. Create a moving binder A three-ring binder is an organization staple for any area of your life. Store and file moving company brochures or business cards, important paperwork like leases or closing documents and use a pouch for holding pens and sticky notes. If you’re someone who likes to store everything digitally, use an organization app so you don’t forget any important information, photos, websites or notes about your move. Pack like a pro Assign a color to each area or room of your home. Use colored pens, tape and stickers so you can easily see your color code from across the room or from inside a moving truck. Label all sides of your boxes so you can easily see where a box belongs even when they’re all jumbled together. If you’re hiring professional movers, this will help them know where each box should end up on moving day. Unpacking will be a breeze. Prepare for moving day Leading up to your move, make sure to hydrate, rest and eat well. Take care of yourself so that you’ll be completely ready to take on the tasks at hand. Don’t forget to pack a survival box with the essentials you need for the first night in your new home. Toilet paper, sheets, towels, soap and a coffee pot are just a few of the items that you want to be sure you can easily access. Instead of worrying about the endless moving logistics and details, focus on the exciting adventure ahead of you. Follow these tips to simplify your move for an easy, stress-free process. Travel...Plan a Weekend Getaway for the Family (BPT) - Before those magical summer days vanish into fall, now is a good time to pack your suitcases, load up the car and escape on a final summer adventure. The late days of summer offer much to enjoy for a new segment of traveler: the Seekender. They are bold adventurers who take advantage of the weekend to pursue their passions.
Professional surfer Bethany Hamilton knows a few things about the Seekender lifestyle. “With my family, we seek to live the life we love together, especially on the weekend of busy work-filled weeks,” Bethany says. Does this sound like you and your family? Get out the map, choose a place you haven't experienced yet and get ready for a fun weekend. This is how Bethany does it: Put a cap on drive time: Don’t waste the weekend with hours and hours in the car. Bethany tries to avoid ultra-long travel days, so her little one can get a nap in. Find a destination you can reach without hassle within three hours or so, while the kids doze and relax in the back seat. On Saturday, you’ll wake up at your getaway spot, ready to seize the weekend. Think simple: Don’t book every hour of the day with an activity. Back off a bit on the planning, and set your sights on one or two spots you’d like to visit each day. Leave some space for relaxation and spontaneity. Go with the flow and consider letting the kids help make the plans for the day. Involving them in the planning will keep everyone’s mood elevated and allow for a stress-free trip. Be on the lookout for family friendly activities: Along with the usual parks and museums, don't forget to check for special weekend events in your area. In the final weeks of summer, for example, fair and festival season is in full swing. Set aside some time for the destination's local festivals or state fairs, where the kids can enjoy carnival rides, local music and food. Get outdoors: Embrace the outdoors and the warm weather before it cools down in the fall. Did you know that the National Parks Service maintains 397 parks and 2,461 national landmarks? Bethany has added Yellowstone National Park to her travel bucket list and hopes to experience its natural wonders with her family soon. Check out this interactive map to see if you've missed any exciting stops in your region. Or if you're feeling more adventurous, this is a perfect time of year to visit the mountains. In the summer months, the parks often offer alpine slides and mountain biking trails, which makes an excellent day trip outing under the sun. Pick the right hotel: Choose a hotel that offers a variety of locations so your entire family can have a good night’s sleep wherever you land. For example, with over 2,100 properties globally, Hampton by Hilton is the perfect option for your family weekend getaway. With a free hot breakfast for every guest and takeaway bags for families on-the-go, you don’t have the hassle of planning breakfast — plus there’s plenty of fresh tea and hazelnut coffee to keep parents caffeinated. Downtime at the hotel is also easy and relaxing, with free Wi-Fi, and, at most locations, an exercise room and a pool. Pack up the bags and begin planning your next three-day weekend trip with your family. This is a wonderful chance for individuals, families and children to explore the exciting world of traditional crafts. The crafters are under tents in case of rain. The schedule is subject to change. A presentation of traditional toys and games will take place and visitors will be able to try out various samples for some old fashion fun. A children’s area will offer the younger set an opportunity to craft a simple toy or rag doll for themselves. Bonnie Scott, our master puppeteer, will teach children puppet making. Heritage Craft Day, a part of Quiet Valley’s summer “Art from the Heart” series, is supported by a Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Project Stream grant. Heritage Craft Day is included in the regular admission price of $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 3 – 12 and children two and under are free. Farm tours are available throughout the day on Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The bake oven will be in operation. There will also be wagon rides for a small fee, weather permitting.
