NCC Grant to Address Sexual Assualt
Safety on Campus - Northampton Community College is one of 36 postsecondary institutions in Pennsylvania to be awarded grants of up to $30,000 each to address campus sexual assault. The grants were awarded to postsecondary institutions across the state to implement strategies on their campuses as part of the state’s It’s On Us PA campaign. Goals of the campaign include: Improve awareness, prevention, reporting and response systems regarding sexual violence in schools, colleges and universities to better serve all students. Remove/reduce barriers that prevent survivors of sexual violence from reporting and/or accessing vital resources by creating a more consistent, empowering reporting process for student survivors of gender-based violence. Demonstrate significant, proactive, and sustainable leadership to change campus culture by challenging Pennsylvania’s education leaders – including college and university presidents and superintendents – as well as students, teachers, faculty, staff, families and communities to pledge to improve their institutions’ climate. Programs or activities that were considered for funding included campus-wide training for students, faculty and staff; institutional campaigns to raise awareness and understanding of the reporting process and resources available to and rights of survivors of sexual violence; programs that enhance awareness of available resources and students’ rights or seek to increase mechanisms for anonymous reporting; and efforts to improve capacity to collect federal- or state-required data.. Can You Believe It?Squirrel is "Bulb Bandit" in Seattle SEATTLE, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- A Seattle woman whose home was targeted by a Christmas light-stealing "bulb bandit" said she eventually caught the culprit on video -- a neighborhood squirrel.
Margaret Rican said the "Christmas bulb bandit" stole more than 150 bulbs from her outdoor decorations in the space of 24 hours before she managed to catch the thief on video. A video Rican posted to YouTube shows the squirrel running while holding a yellow Christmas bulb, while a second video shows the small animal jumping into a tree while carrying a blue bulb. A third video shows the squirrel repeating the jump, this time with an orange bulb. "The holiday season is upon us, and people are feeling festive with holiday lights, always fearing that the Grinch will steal Christmas," Rican wrote. "This year, we found a new thief. He's a little squirrel that we are calling the Bulb Bandit. We want to believe that this little varmint is decorating his nest, but really, we think that he believes these to be food. He has stolen 150 in 24 hours, carefully and precisely chewing through the wires to steal the bulb and bury them around the neighborhood. He's the hardest working rodent we've ever seen. and we are really pulling for him, and hoping he survives this winter. He's a quick little bandit, with really good hops."
Technology...Modern Desktops: Re-Imagining the Workhorses of Personal Computing (BPT) - With the rise of mobile devices, you might wonder what the future holds for desktop computers. While the total number of mobile users surpassed desktop users around 2014, the number of people still using desktops might surprise you. The desktop is alive and well, and a new crop of task-specific desktops are rewriting the look and utility of the original personal computing device.
Personal computing workhorses People still find desktops useful for a number of reasons. They provide a level of computing power, flexibility and durability that many portable devices are only beginning to achieve. From a usability perspective, a desktop allows people greater display versatility and visibility. It may be difficult to see the spreadsheet numbers you're crunching on the smaller screens of tablets or laptops. A smartphone screen just isn't large or robust enough to give you a visually rich gaming experience. Online shopping on a desktop makes it easy to enlarge catalog images, work out of multiple tabs and comparison shop. In addition, you can speak to Cortana, the personal digital assistant, on your Windows 10 desktop and rely on her for notifications. In fact, one study found that nearly 75 percent of U.S. adults own a desktop or laptop computer. Multiple studies point to the idea that people choose desktops for more complex digital activities, and tend to spend longer on web pages when they use their desktops versus mobile devices. New look, new tasks While desktops continue to play an important role in people's digital lives, desktop designers aren't resting on their laurels. Instead, they're producing new Windows 10 desktops designed to facilitate specific tasks - and look cool while doing it. Three key areas of focus are gaming, productivity and consumer use. Gaming desktops emphasize high-resolution, realistic and immersive graphics, as well as virtual reality capabilities. For example, the Dell Alienware Area-51 is virtual reality (VR)-ready, making it ideal for gamers. Its support for super-high resolution 4k displays and multi-tasking power also make it a preferred platform for developers and programmers. Running Windows 10 and up to 10-core Intel Core i7 Extreme processor options, the PC's unique tricorn outer casing is also designed for versatility and utility. The desktop can easily be turned onto any one of its three corners for ease of access to ports when attaching and removing cables. PC manufacturers are challenging conventional desktop designs and coming up with breakthrough devices. New designs take into account that personal tastes and preferences can influence PC selection as much as the type of tasks people will perform on their desktops. For example, the new futuristic Samsung ArtPC Pulse marries leading-edge styling with powerful computing capability. Running Windows 10 and equipped with a 6th Generation Intel Core i7 processor, the PC delivers exceptional graphics, smooth visuals, easily expandable storage, and 360-degree Omnidirectional Sound. Finally, if you're looking for the perfect device for your home office or family use, new desktops like the HP Elite Slice offer big power in compact casings. Small and sleek, this Windows 10 PC is powered through a USB connection to a monitor, minimizing the need for cables on top of your desk. Specialized casings and attachments allow the PC to act as a speaker phone, multi-media player or wireless device charger. While laptops and other PC form factors can be a good choice, the desktop certainly has a special seat at the table. New designs, expanded capabilities and outstanding versatility make today's desktop computer as powerful, useful and preferred as ever. To learn more about today's desktop computers and for a list of deals and where to buy, visit your local Microsoft Store or microsoftstore.com. Community....Who Do You Know What Gives the Most During the Holidays? (BPT) - Everyone has favorite moments from the holiday season. For some it's a present from a distant relative or greeting family members with a warm hug when they get off the plane. For others it's sitting down together to enjoy a delicious Christmas dinner. Some of these moments are steeped in tradition and others are new occurrences your family will be talking about for years. But old or new, each moment is special in its own way.
Creating a memorable holiday season takes time and dedication, not only that of families across the country, but of thousands of transportation professionals as well. And in the spirit of a season in which it's better to give than to receive, here are Michelin's unsung heroes of transportation that deserve thanks for everything they do to make the holidays special for everyone. * Airport workers. That warm hug in the airport would never happen without the tireless effort of these flight and ground crews. Last year, an estimated 38.1 million people flew during the holiday season - that's roughly one tenth of the nation's population - and it's the hard work of airport professionals everywhere that got them where they were going. * Farmers. The holiday meal starts with the work of the farmer and each farmer feeds more people than you may have guessed. According to the USDA, each farmer supplies food for 144 people in the U.S. and abroad each year. That's enough to satisfy all your holiday guests, no matter how many people are invited. * Truck drivers. However you may travel to your holiday destination - planes, trains or automobiles! - your shipped packages will arrive by truck. An estimated 3.6 million truck drivers will transport nearly 70 percent of all freight tonnage in the U.S. this holiday season. Drivers work long hours to make sure your gifts arrive on time. * Miners. No one wants a lump of coal in their stocking, but coal miners also produce 210 metric tons of gold producing ore and 1,170 metric tons of silver producing ore. And for those gifts you'd much rather have? Yes, they're responsible for those shiny baubles and jewelry as well. * Parcel delivery workers. Those weekly deliveries take on special importance during the holiday season and for parcel delivery workers the job takes on extra volume as well. Research shows parcel delivery workers will deliver nearly 20 billion packages, letters and gifts during the 2016 holiday season, according to the United States Postal Service. * Snow Plow Drivers. Thousands of drivers are responsible for clearing millions of miles of roadways and bridges to keep roads safe for traveling to holiday events and gatherings. * Construction workers. Responsible for infrastructure, housing, commercial and governmental projects, these dedicated workers work through the elements to complete roads, bridges, water and wastewater projects and buildings. Whether they built or renovated the home that will host your holidays this year, or the roads you travel to your favorite parties, construction workers play an integral part in bringing your holidays to life. Say thanks today The holiday season is magical due to the efforts of these dedicated people, and to say thanks, Michelin is recognizing individuals in the transportation and travel industries throughout the holiday season. Nominations can be made by posting to Michelin's Twitter account via the hashtag #KeepThanksMoving or by posting on the MichelinUSA Facebook page. Michelin will then randomly select seven individuals to receive a Michelin-themed gourmet gift box from Try the World. You can learn more about the contest at Michelinmedia.com, so get your nominations ready and give back to those who give so much to you during the holidays.

The Chelsea Sun Inn is an elegant venue nestled in the rolling hills of Upper Mount Bethel Township just one-quarter mile from Becks Tree Farm off route 611. All proceeds from the Holiday Marketplace support Bloom Bangor, a 2-year residential recovery program for women moving beyond a life of trauma, addiction and violence. Modeled after the remarkably successful Thistle Farms Nashville program, Bloom Bangor welcomed their first residents in early March. The residential program provides housing for up to 6 women who live in a disciplined and supportive community. Bloom offers housing, trauma informed counseling, art therapy, access to medical care, education, job training and employment for two years without charging women or receiving government funding. Participants attend outpatient recovery services at Recovery Revolution, Inc. No staff member lives with residents and instead the community is guided by 24 spiritual principles as outlined by Thistle Farms Nashville. Bloom Creative Studio is a complementary program of Bloom Bangor and is where women living in the home are employed in a supportive environment. The 2,400 square foot arts, crafts and retail space in historic downtown Bangor hosts painting parties and crafting workshops for kids and adults as well as “open studio” sessions 4-5 days per week. Open studio is a time when guests can walk in and create on their own using all the studio’s tools and supplies. A licensed art therapist leads a weekly art therapy group for women every Monday that is open to the community. Bloom Bangor, Bloom Creative Studio and a close partnership with Recovery Revolution, Inc. are essential to the success of the overall program. “This is where survivors will find the necessary resources to maintain recovery, heal from wounds of trauma, enhance vocational skills and discover hope to begin a new and healthier chapter in life,” says Carol Andersen, Executive Director. “We believe art heals and develops resiliency and that connections within our community will be a key to success for the courageous women healing at Bloom Bangor. We are stronger when we join forces to empower individuals and ultimately create communities where everyone can thrive and work towards a bright and promising future.” December 12Weona Park Pool Pals
