Local Water Conservation Urged Northampton County is one of 34 Pennsylvania counties now operating under a drought watch as issued by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP). The declaration is in response to low stream flows, declining groundwater levels and below-normal precipitation primarily across counties in the upper half and south-central portions of Pennsylvania. These conditions have resulted in rainfall deficits of as much as 6.0 inches during the past 90 days.
• Run water only when necessary. Avoid running the faucet while brushing your teeth or shaving, or letting the shower run for several minutes before use. • Check for household leaks. A leaking toilet can waste up to 200 gallons of water each day. • Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads. • Replace older appliances with high-efficiency, front-loading models that use about 30 percent less water and 40 to 50 percent less energy. • Install low-flow plumbing fixtures and aerators on faucets.

Stroudsburg (PA) – Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will feature the 10th annual Heritage Craft Day on Saturday, August 6 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Heritage Craft persons will demonstrate traditional craft skills of the 1800s throughout the day. There will be hands-on opportunities for visitors who wish to try out some of these crafts for themselves.
Demonstrations such as spinning, weaving, wheat weaving, bobbin lace, horn work, pottery and blacksmithing will take place. The purpose of Heritage Craft Day is to provide a greater awareness of these historic folk crafts that were essential to everyday living in previous generations. This is a wonderful chance for individuals, families and children to explore the exciting world of traditional crafts. The crafters are under tents in case of rain. The schedule is subject to change. A presentation of traditional toys and games will take place and visitors will be able to try out various samples for some old fashion fun. A children’s area will offer the younger set an opportunity to craft a simple toy or rag doll for themselves. Bonnie Scott, our master puppeteer, will teach children puppet making. Heritage Craft Day, a part of Quiet Valley’s summer “Art from the Heart” series, is supported by a Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts Project Stream grant. Heritage Craft Day is included in the regular admission price of $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for children ages 3 – 12 and children two and under are free. Farm tours are available throughout the day on Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. The bake oven will be in operation. There will also be wagon rides for a small fee, weather permitting. TBILISI, Georgia, Aug. 4 (UPI) -- An incredibly rare litter of white lions were born at a zoo in Tbilisi, Georgia, to two of their resident in lions.
Tbilisi Zoo shared photos of the three newly born lion cubs, which experienced a "complicated" delivery process. According to The Telegraph, the parents of the cubs, Cleopatra and Samuel, lost a cub during a flood in 2015. The new cubs, whose white color comes from a rare mutation similar to albinism, will spend the beginning of their life away from the public view. "Currently, the newborn babies are being kept in a closed cage and away from the public so they can adapt to the calm environment," the zoo said. According to the zoo, after spending a brief period with their mother, the rare lions will be put on display where their strange coloring will likely make them a popular attraction. "Their mother will most likely let them out in the coming days, and everyone will have a chance to come and see them for the first time," they said

August 11Gravestone Preservation Presentation The Slate Belt Heritage Center will hold their monthly historic presentation on Thursday, August 11, At 7:00 PM. Speaker for the evening will be historian John O’Brien who will be giving a talk on gravestone and monument preservation and repair. Topics being covered are cleaning, the reading of gravestones and using mirrors. He will also discuss the different types of repairs he has undertaken. Mr. O’Brien is an amateur conservator who repairs gravestones and monuments as a hobby. He has repaired several hundred monuments/gravestones and mainly works in in the Warren and Hunterdon county New Jersey area. The presentation will include pictures from the cemeteries in Lebanon , Stewartsville and Seller cemeteries.
John is a member of the Association for Gravestone Studies and the New Jersey Chapter Chairperson. He is a life member and past President of the Warren County Historical Society. He is also on the Board of Trustees for the Greenwich Presbyterian Cemetery, the Swackhammer Cemetery, team member of the Friends of the Weller Cemetery and an active member of the Hunterdon County Cemetery Committee. The event is free and open to the public (donations kindly accepted). The Heritage Center is located at 30 North 1st Street (Route 191), Bangor, Pa. Joe Emrick (R-Nazareth) and Marcia Hahn (R-Bushkill Township) are teaming up with the Lehigh Valley Aging in Place Coalition to host “Your Aging Parents and You – Beginning the Important Conversation of What We Want as We Age.” The seminar is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 11, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Holy Family Club, 515 W. Mauch Chunk St., Nazareth.
“We’re hosting what might best be referred to as an ‘aging roadmap’ for middle-age adults and their parents,” Hahn said. “A panel of professionals will discuss a number of different issues Pennsylvanians should be taking into account as they and their parents grow older,” Emrick added. Topics to be discussed include elder law, financial planning, Medicare and other insurance alternatives, in-home care options, facility and community options and veterans benefits.
