Book ReviewFor the Glory: Eric Liddell’s Journey from Olympic Champion to Modern Martyr
book by Duncan Hamilton review by Katy Albanese Many of you know the name of Eric Liddell from the 1981 movie Chariots of Fire. It tells the story of Liddell’s deeply held Christian convictions which would not allow him to race in the 1924 Olympics on a Sunday. But you may not know of his life after the Olympics, of his missionary work among the Chinese. Liddell was born in China to missionary parents, and it had always been his plan to return there after his education in England and Scotland. Soon after the Olympic Games in which he competed, he traveled to China and began teaching the people whom he loved. The Japanese invasion of China and the coming of World War II did not deter Liddell from his calling. It did make life more difficult for all missionaries in the country. Liddell sent his wife and children to Canada but he stayed in the land of his birth, doing all he could for the Chinese and for fellow missionaries. Eventually Liddell was interned for more than two years in a Japanese work camp with other foreigners. Few know of what happened to Eric Liddell after 1924. He chose to live his life out of the limelight, in pursuit of God’s glory, not man’s. I was inspired by the life led by this humble man. He was willing to forsake fame and give his life for others. How contrary to the way most of us live our lives. I hope this well-written book will inspire other readers. ![]() (L-R) Hannah Kromer, Caleb Kromer and Daniel Eyre display their championship rabbits during the 4-H Club Livestock Show and Sale held at the Blue Valley Farm Show Saturday afternoon. Megan Lorenz set up her GoPro camera in a spot where bears had been spotted in the past in the hopes of capturing footage of a mother and her two cubs.
Lorenz' camera was successful in spotting the bears, which noticed the camera watching them and came in for a closer look. One of the curious animals swats at the camera with a paw, knocking it to the ground. The bear can then be seen licking the camera before abandoning it to record video of the sky. Lorenz previously discovered her GoPro was "bear proof" when a bear she nicknamed Maggie encountered the recording device on a trail in June and gave it a good swat to the ground before using her mouth to chew on the device's casing.
Home Improvement...How to Use Color Psychology When Painting Your House![]() (BPT) - Do you ever wonder why you feel immediately relaxed when you enter a spa, yet when you enter a gym, you feel alert and energized? The answer can be found in the colors selected to decorate the space. "Interior designers use color psychology to evoke an emotional response," says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams. "Homeowners can use this strategy to connect colors with emotions and memories to create one-of-a-kind spaces."
Color psychology starts by exploring warm and cool hues and then using these different tones to manipulate mood throughout your home. It's easy to do with the tips below. Warm color families Red, orange and yellow are considered warm colors since they are associated with images of heat, like fire or sunshine. Warm families of color are bold and powerful when incorporated into home design. Yellows Because yellow reflects light, it's an excellent choice for foyers and dark hallways. Its cheery nature has the ability to create an uplifting mood in homes. Rich yellows are great accent colors because they catch the eye. A great color to consider is Wadden's favorite: Butterscotch SW 6377. "This color isn't for the faint of heart," she says. "The color features an acidy, deep mustard feel but is a great accent color paired with neutrals. I find its pop can really spark up a room." Reds Reds evoke feelings of passion, energy and intimacy, so it's an excellent color for workout rooms and master bedrooms. Red also inspires the appetite, so is a logical choice for dining rooms or kitchens. Michael Plank, director of color marketing and design services for Sherwin-Williams, enjoys Chinese Red SW0057. "Chinese Red is one of my perennial favorites to play off dark stains with its saturated and sophisticated nature," he says. "Rich in hue as it is in Chinese culture; the harbinger of joy and fortune." Oranges Orange has a friendly attitude that awakens and welcomes. Never understated, orange works well in family rooms and is a playful choice for children's bedrooms or bonus rooms. Orange tones can also integrate into other colors, such as Coral Reef SW6606. "Ever since I was little I had a love affair with orange," says Wadden. "I painted my daughter's room Coral Reef. I love the rich complexity of the color." Cool color families Blue, green and violet are considered cool colors because the inherent tones of each shade. Reminiscent of water and the outdoors, cool colors stimulate feelings of peace and tranquility, and are great options for bedrooms, bathrooms and patio spaces. Blues Blue is soothing and elicits feelings of relaxation, which is perfect for bedrooms and bathrooms. Alternatively, blues should be kept out of the kitchen because it's a color that's associated with appetite suppression. "I love cool greenish blues," says Plank. "Blue Sky 0063 is from our historic palette and is a calming hue that works in virtually every room." Greens Green tones provide a feeling of familiarity because they are found throughout nature. Light greens are ideal for living rooms and offices; dark greens are wonderfully rich as accent colors. Vivid greens add unexpected pop, notes Sherwin-Williams Senior designer Karrie Hodge, who likes Marea Baja SW 9185. "I really like dark colors and this color reminds me of the deep turquoise part of the ocean," she says. "This would make a great front door color on a white or gray colored house. This color would pair well with some natural stone or brick or wood." Violets Purple tones are immediately attractive to children, making them a great paint option in playrooms or bonus rooms. Additionally, violet is also a stunning accent color in bathrooms. When it comes to the violet family of colors, Hodge likes the versatility of Veri Berri SW 9069. "Its a rich berry tone that is playful," she says. "This would make a really dramatic accent wall color in any room; I could even see this as a really fresh front door color." Health...Health Tips to Live By for the School Year![]() (StatePoint) At school, kids are exposed to an influx of germs that can cause a number of preventable sicknesses, including cold and flu. The top germiest school-based culprits include water fountains, plastic reusable cafeteria trays, keyboards, toilets and…students’ hands.
To keep your family free from the sniffles all year long, here are five easy-to-follow tips to ensure a healthy, happy and absent-free school year. 1. Teach Kids to Wash Hands the Right Way. It seems simple enough, but research shows that only 5 percent of people wash their hands properly. The CDC recommends following five simple steps: wet, lather, scrub (for at least 20 seconds), rinse and dry. Don’t forget backs of hands, between fingers and under the nails. Handwashing is the best defense against germs, but if soap and water aren’t available, hand sanitizer is a good alternative. 2. Sanitize School Supplies. Sanitize school supplies, lunch boxes, bottoms of backpacks, etc., weekly. These items are exposed to a variety of germs lurking in places like gym lockers, on desks and in bathrooms. Use disinfecting wipes on plastic objects, and throw items like lunch boxes and backpacks in the washing machine. Send kids to school with disposable wipes so they can clean surfaces like desks, cafeteria trays and other surfaces throughout the day. 3. Set a Sleep Schedule. A regular bedtime and an alert morning go hand-in-hand. The National Sleep Foundation recommends a calming nighttime routine like reading a book or taking a bath to signal the brain that it’s bedtime, and leave technology like tablets, laptops and cell phones out of the bedroom. If you’re wondering how much sleep your child needs each night, it’s recommended that toddlers receive 11 to 14 hours, preschoolers 10 to 13 hours, school-aged children nine to 11 hours, and teenagers eight to 10 hours. 4. Keep Healthy Snacks and Meals on Hand. A healthy, balanced diet has been proven to keep kids mentally sharp and focused, but fast-paced schedules during the school year can sometimes result in quick-fix, and often unhealthy, food choices. Keep nutritious grab-and-go snacks like trail mix and fruit at the ready. And don’t skip breakfast. It can mean decreased cognitive performance in areas like alertness, attention, memory and problem solving. 5. Nurse Kids Back to Health. Germs are lurking everywhere -- school, preschool and daycare, so be prepared if sickness does strike. Tools like TempTraq come in handy for unexpected fevers, giving parents peace of mind and children the rest they need to get better. This wearable, Bluetooth temperature monitor continuously senses, records and transmits body temperature for up to 24-hours. It can even send alerts to your smartphone via its free mobile app to notify you immediately if your child’s fever reaches an unsafe level. Visit Target or CVS to stock your medicine cabinet with this useful must-have, or order online at TempTraq.com. From hectic schedules to germ-ridden classrooms, the stress and environment of school can take a toll on kids’ health. Keep them healthier with a few simple strategies and you’ll be headed to a perfect attendance record. TRAFFIC ALERTS WEEK OF AUGUST 29(DELABOLE ROAD (WASHINGTON TWP) Between Between O.W.
