Slate Belt YMCA Hosts First Annual Delaware Dashby Mandy Heard
Forty-eight local runners came out to the Jerry Brunetti Environmental and Welcome Center in Lower Mount Bethel on August 6th to run in the Slate Belt YMCA’s First Annual Delaware Dash. The four-mile trail consisted of scenic wooded trail running as well as some flat field running. The participants ran the Talen Energy Power Plant Trails which consists of scenic views of the Delaware River, wooded areas that include hills, trees, and rocks. The course was a challenge but runners of all ages were able to meet the task. Gracious volunteers worked stations throughout the run to provide runners with motivation, water, and directions. At the end of the race runners were rewarded with bagels, oranges, and water. A great time was had by all of the runners that ran the trail run, a feeling of accomplishment of completing a challenge could be seen on the faces of the runners as they crossed the finish line. A small crowd gathered at the finish line to offer cheers of congratulations. Top runners were Megan Karn and Colin Saville. The Slate Belt YMCA plans on making the Delaware Dash an annual event and hope that each year this event grows in numbers and support. If trail running is something you are considering the Slate Belt YMCA hopes that you contemplate running in the Dash next year. The next big event the Slate Belt Y will be hosting is a golf outing held on Sunday, September 25th at Whitetail Golf Club. For more information about events and scheduling at the Slate Belt YMCA visit www.greatervalleyymca.org , like them on Facebook, and look for the fall brochure in your mail. Book ReviewThe Secret Rescue: The Untold Story of American Nurses and Medics Behind Nazi Lines
book by Cate Lineberry review by Katy Albanese This incredible story is a must-read for all who are interested in stories of World War II. A group of 30 nurses, medics, and pilots takes off from Catania, Sicily, intending to land in Bari, Italy, to evacuate wounded soldiers. Instead, a violent storm pushes the plane off course, and it crash lands in Albania, a country located across the Adriatic Sea from Italy. For the next two months, these medics and nurses endure grueling hikes through the mountains of Albania in the winter snows. Without adequate winter clothing or boots, they travel from one village to the next, in search of food, shelter and a way back to Allied lines. Accompanying the Americans are Albanian partisans who risk their lives to help these strangers. They evade German troops, talk the villagers into sharing their food and locate British agents who can arrange escape for the stranded group. What a fascinating account of a long buried event. You are sure to enjoy this true story. The 55-year-old, whose family had fallen on hard times recently, said the win will give her family the financial relief they need, mlive.com reported. "When I saw the number on my cell phone, I knew I had won," Price said. "I was at work and tried to stand up from my desk but my knees buckled and I fell to the floor. I couldn't stop bawling while the woman from the Lottery told me the good news." Price plans to use the winnings to pay off her house, buy a new car, take a trip in the spring, and invest the rest, MILottery.com reported. "This came at the perfect time for us," she said. "We've had some financial trouble recently, and this gives us so much relief to know we can pay our bills and have some cushion that will help us for years to come." She and her husband Dan decided to take the lump sum of $735,000 instead of an annuity. They picked up their winnings on Saturday. After she finally recovered from that phone call, Price said she texted her husband, "BINGO BABY" to let him know life was about to get a little easier.
Health...What to Know About Gut Health![]() (StatePoint) Your gut health affects more than just how your stomach feels. Recent scientific breakthroughs have uncovered links between the state of the gut microbiome and a range of human health issues such as obesity, diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, cardiovascular disease, immune system disorders, asthma and even cancer and its treatment.
Experts say that understanding the gut microbiome may change how these diseases are diagnosed and treated. Additionally, specific microbes have been linked to good digestive health. “The gut microbiome is currently subject to intense and growing interest within the medical and pharmaceutical industries, but is also of great interest to average people,” says Michael Farrell, PhD, Managing Director of Biome360, an emerging biotechnology and probiotics company. Farrell says that with the right tools and knowledge, anyone can positively influence and manage his or her own gut microbiome in the pursuit of better overall health. He is offering the following tips: • Assess your existing gut health and monitor changes over time. New tools, like the Gut Microbiome Sampling Kit, from Biome360, make it possible to do so at home. The sample collection process requires no training or preparation and the Biome360 dashboard allows users to learn about and explore their gut microbiome, and compare it to age and gender-matched healthy peers. • Supplement your gut health with targeted probiotic strains such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus. Probiotics support digestive and immune health, can aid in weight loss and can lower the bad bacteria in your body that can cause infections and other problems. Probiotic supplements are especially important after a course of antibiotics. • What you eat matters. Make sure you get high-quality fiber in your diet -- the recommended daily intake of 25 to 38 grams -- and take steps to limit processed carbohydrates. Include fermented foods in your diet, which are packed with beneficial bacteria. Good choices include yogurt, cottage cheese, kimchi, tempeh, natto, kambucha, sauerkraut, miso, milk kefir and pickles. • Exercise early and often. Exercise, early in life, can alter microbial communities for the better, promoting healthier brain and metabolic activity over the course of a lifetime, according to recent research at the University of Colorado. You may not realize how much control you have over your own health. With the right information at your fingertips, you can learn more about what is happening inside your gut, and take informed action to improve your health.
Health...What You Need to Know About Life Insurance![]() (StatePoint) If you’re like many Americans, you may spend substantial time and energy on general financial planning while overlooking the various ways life insurance may fit into that plan. Life insurance has wide-ranging benefits for people of all ages that you should consider, say experts.
“There is a significant opportunity for life insurance to help you achieve financial security during any age of saving, and for the many concerns you face throughout your lifetime,” says Andrew Bucklee, senior vice president and head of Insurance Solutions Distribution for Lincoln Financial Distributors. “It should be part of most consumers’ long-term financial plan.” September is Life Insurance Awareness Month and the perfect opportunity to learn more about how it can help you protect your financial security. Here are a few things to consider. • If you only associate life insurance with helping address funeral expenses or estate planning, take note, depending on the type of policy, life insurance can potentially be used to protect against concerns like retirement savings, loss of household income due to illness, children’s college tuition expenses and long-term care in retirement. What’s more, life insurance can be used as an overarching vehicle for wealth protection. • Some carriers are stepping up their technology to make life insurance easy to research, purchase and manage in the same way you may have come to expect from other businesses in today’s digital world. Lab free underwriting, electronic policy delivery options and telephone application processes are all a reality in today’s marketplace, and are eliminating much of the time consuming paperwork and correspondence typically associated with obtaining a life insurance policy. • Each generation has a different set of financial priorities. Younger generations are focused on paying off student loan debt or credit card debt. For Baby Boomers, one of the greatest worries is the cost of healthcare in retirement, with 66 percent citing that as a pressing concern in a recent study by Lincoln. Because life insurance can potentially help address all these concerns, people of all ages should evaluate their life insurance options. “Studies show that people are beginning their financial planning sooner, which is great to see,” says Bucklee. “No matter what your age, it’s important to fully understand your life insurance options available through both financial advisors and workplace benefit packages. Advisors and employers are great resources that can help individuals unleash the full potential of life insurance.” TRAFFIC ALERTS WEEK OF AUGUST 29(DELABOLE ROAD (WASHINGTON TWP) Between Between O.W.
