St. Luke’s Brings World’s Smallest Pacemaker to Lehigh Valley
Bethlehem, PA St. Luke’s University Health Network is pleased to announce the successful implantation of the Medtronic Micra Transcatheter Pacing System, the first in northeastern Pennsylvania. Cardiac electrophysiologist Sudip Nanda, MD, performed the procedure to implant the pacemaker on Tuesday, August 9 at St. Luke’s University Hospital – Bethlehem.
Mary Molinari of Mount Pocono is not only the first patient in northeastern Pennsylvania to benefit from this new technology, she is a primary example of how St. Luke’s is providing better health care to the people of Monroe County. “This revolutionary technology is the first FDA-approved leadless pacemaker,” says electrophysiologist Darren M. Traub, DO, Medical Director of the St. Luke’s Heart Rhythm Center. “Comparable in size to a large vitamin, the Micra can be placed minimally invasively through a catheter and can pace the heart for up to 12 years.” Dr. Douglas Degler, MD, Mrs. Molinari’s primary care physician, referred her to cardiologist Dr. Jeffrey Bair, MD, both of whom practice in Monroe County. After reviewing the other factors affecting Mary’s health, Dr. Bair referred her to Dr. Nanda to consider a wider range of options. Dr. Nanda recommended the pacemaker to address Mary’s irregular heart rate, which is very slow at times, causing her to become lightheaded and even pass out on occasion. Other factors include a stroke that weakened her entire right side and a bilateral mastectomy Mary had years ago that provided challenges by creating thick scar tissue. The Micra device provides the unique capacity to pace her heart, and not interfere with veins of either arm, which could cause serious complications in post–mastectomy patients. “The cardiac electrophysiologists at St. Luke’s University Health Network are dedicated to delivering the most state-of-the-art treatments available for heart rhythm disturbances,” Dr. Traub says. “As soon as this technology became FDA approved we worked with the hospital administration to make the Micra available to select patients – like Mary – who qualify for the device. We are proud to offer the most advanced cardiac devices and ablation therapy right here in the Lehigh Valley.” All of St. Luke’s electrophysiologists worked together to bring Micra TPS to St. Luke’s. Dr. Steven M. Stevens, MD, stresses that this technology plays an important role in advancing modern pacing systems. “Micra TPS has no leads, hence we avoid lead-related complications,” he says. “There are no restrictions on the patient as far as arm movement is considered and they can go back to full activity much sooner. In the select group of patients who qualify for this device, it is aesthetically compelling as there is no visible scar or device footprint on the chest wall.” To implant the Micra pacemaker, Dr. Nanda made a small incision in Mary’s groin and then threaded the pacemaker through her femoral vein and into her heart. The Micra TPS is attached to the heart with small tines and delivers electrical impulses that pace the heart through an electrode at the end of the device. It responds to the patients' activity levels by automatically adjusting therapy. Mary, who returned home Wednesday – the day after her surgery – says she is recovering nicely. She feels honored and privileged to be the first patient to receive the Micra pacemaker. “It affords me a better quality of life without compromising my other health issues. Dr. Nanda and his staff were amazing. The treatment I received was first rate. I look forward to many more years of living my life to the fullest.” Another benefit of the Micra TPS is patients may receive full-body magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans, which is not possible for individuals with many traditional pacemakers. Should the Micra ever need to be removed, the Micra design incorporates a retrieval feature, but it may also be left in the body. For patients who need more than one device, the miniaturized Micra TPS has a unique feature that enables it to be permanently turned off. As a result, it can remain in the body and a new device can be implanted without risk of electrical interaction.

PUMP New Location Dedication Today A dedication for the new location of the Portland-Upper Mt Bethel Food Pantry (PUMP) will be held on Sunday, August 21 at 2:00 PM. The public is invited to attend the dedication. PUMP’s new location is at the Portland Hook & Ladder Co. William Pensyl Social Hall, 111 State Street, Portland.
Twenty-two years ago when Sherma LaBarre Godshalk felt the urge to help people needing food, she started PUMP with a few volunteers, a card table, and some donated canned vegetables from her church, Portland United Methodist. Sadly, Sherma died in April 2015, but her wish to see PUMP continue to help people in the Slatebelt area, continues. In recent months over 400 limited resource families from Bangor, East Bangor, Pen Argyl, Wind Gap, Portland, Upper Mt Bethel and Martins Creek communities, came to the pantry seeking help for themselves and their families. PUMP has outgrown its current location. The board and many volunteers have spent countless hours working on a new plan. The new location will provide larger and more efficient space, better parking, easier access to the building, more efficient storage and set-up of food items, easier unloading from the food trucks, easier access for clientele to name a few benefits.

Safe Haven Dog Adoption Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, at Tractor Supply, Rt. 940, Mt Pocono.
Safe Haven will have many adorable dogs available for you to meet and get to know. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit prior to adoption. Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. Shelter killing is the number one cause of dog deaths and Safe Haven has saved more than 800 lives so far. Safe Haven Rescue needs volunteers to help with adoption days, fundraising, transporting dogs to vets and groomers and fostering homeless dogs until they find their forever homes. School Cause One Apple at a Time
While an apple a day may keep the doctor away, it turns out that this delectable fruit can help students, too.
This month you can aid specific school causes across the nation by taking a bite out of your favorite apple with "Buy an Apple, Help a Student," a fundraising program supported by the U.S. apple industry and other sponsors.
The way it works is this:
Between now and Nov. 15, the U.S. Apple Association, through its Apples for Education program, will feature 12 student causes on Apples4Ed.com. The classroom projects in need of funding range from new school gardens and improved libraries to updated technology, revitalized playgrounds and enhanced resources for teachers. To support one of these causes, all you have to do is follow these four simple steps:
* Snack. Grab anything apple-related, such as a piece of fruit, juice, applesauce, or any product from one of the program partners, like Marzetti dips and dressings, KIND Snacks, Roth cheese, or Johnsonville sausage.
* Snap. Take a picture of yourself or others enjoying the snack.
* Tag. Find a school cause that you would like to support at Apples4Ed.com, tag your photo with the project's name and use the hashtag #Apples4Ed.
* Share. Vote for your favorite school cause by uploading the photo to Apples4Ed.com or sharing on Instagram. You can vote as often as you like by uploading photos of yourself or others enjoying apples and apple pairings.
For every vote, the U.S. Apple Association and its program partners will pledge financial assistance to nominated projects to help them reach their goals. In addition, participants are eligible to win gift cards and have money donated directly to their selected projects.
In December, USApple will announce the cause with the most votes, which will receive the highest donation. All schools will receive a portion of funding for their respective project.

A September 2015 poll by NeighborWorks America discovered that nearly 90 percent of consumers consider home ownership at least somewhat important. Guarantee your home ownership success by following these guidelines from NeighborWorks America:
1. Get professional help.
The best way to learn what you need to know about buying a home is to meet with a nonprofit housing counselor. Look for a certified professional who can explain the different mortgages and interest rates, the effect of credit scores on loan approval, how much down payment is needed for purchase and how much home you can really afford.
"The housing market is tough right now, with fewer homes for sale on the market than usual, and new mortgage rules and many mortgage products to choose," said Marietta Rodriguez, vice president for homeownership and lending at NeighborWorks America. "To be in the strongest position to make an offer that is accepted, consumers have to be prepared. That's where initial consultation with a housing counselor is vital, even before meeting with other professionals involved in the process."

Smart consumers approach home ownership with a budget, but surveys show that less than one-third of potential buyers have one. A winning bid on the wrong home can spell trouble. A bidding war could weaken your determination to find the right home while pushing the limits of your budget. Moreover, sellers know that desperate buyers may avoid inspection contingencies.
"Forgoing a home inspection to move up a place in the bidding process could be costly down the road if problems and defects with the home arise. NeighborWorks recommends that homebuyers have a home inspection, and know as much as possible about the inside of a home as the outside," added Rodriguez.

Trinity Lutheran thanks community supporters
Trinity Lutheran Church, Bangor, recently completed its 10 week Tasty Tuesdays program and would like to extend their appreciation to all those in the community who made this program possible. ( Tasty Tuesdays is a free bag lunch program to children, their families and individuals within the Slate Belt area who are in need of a meal. ) The program was completely made possible through the generous financial support of the following organizations/businesses: Bangor Lions Club, Thrivent Financial Services, Weiss Markets, Merchants Bank, Slater Family Network, Bangor General Store(who provided the deli meat, loaves of bread and a tasty treat at the conclusion of the program) and two unnamed individuals. We had an increase of 30% in meals provided- 450, and we feel blessed to be able to reach out to our community and assist those in need.

BAHS School Marching Band Uniform Fund Drive
The Bangor Area High School Marching Band uniforms, which are modeled after Her Majesty’s Royal Welsh Guard, pay tribute to the heritage of Bangor, PA. After years of normal wear and tear, the uniforms must be replaced. The new uniforms will continue to use the same style.
The Slater Band Boosters have initiated a fund drive to support this effort. The Boosters will appreciate any donations, small or large, to this cause.

The Bangor High School Class of 1966 will hold their 50th Reunion on Saturday October 8, 2016 @ the Delaware Water Gap Country Club (Wolf Hollow). Cocktails and Class Picture will be at 6:00 PM with Buffet Dinner to follow @ 7:00 PM. The night before, on October 7, the class will attend the Bangor High School football game and sit as a group. They will then have a get together at Liberty Fire Hall after the game.

Portland Girl Scout Troop Looking for New Members

The BAHS Alumni Association is running a drive to collect used musical instruments to be donated to Bangor’s elementary band program. PUMP Moving to New Location A dedication for the new location of the Portland-Upper Mt Bethel Food Pantry (PUMP) will be held on Sunday, August 21 at 2:00 PM. The public is invited to attend the dedication. PUMP’s new location is at the Portland Hook & Ladder Co. William Pensyl Social Hall, 111 State Street, Portland.
Twenty-two years ago when Sherma LaBarre Godshalk felt the urge to help people needing food, she started PUMP with a few volunteers, a card table, and some donated canned vegetables from her church, Portland United Methodist. Sadly, Sherma died in April 2015, but her wish to see PUMP continue to help people in the Slatebelt area, continues. In recent months over 400 limited resource families from Bangor, East Bangor, Pen Argyl, Wind Gap, Portland, Upper Mt Bethel and Martins Creek communities, came to the pantry seeking help for themselves and their families. PUMP has outgrown its current location. The board and many volunteers have spent countless hours working on a new plan. The new location will provide larger and more efficient space, better parking, easier access to the building, more efficient storage and set-up of food items, easier unloading from the food trucks, easier access for clientele to name a few benefits. Safe Haven Dog Adoption Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, at Tractor Supply, Rt. 940, Mt Pocono.
Safe Haven will have many adorable dogs available for you to meet and get to know. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit prior to adoption. Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. Farm to Table Food Tasting
Stroudsburg (PA) As a special fundraiser there will be a Farm to Table Food Tasting Experience - Saturday September 3, 2016 at Quiet Valley’s historic farm museum. Folks will be able to come out for a very tasty visit focused on end of summer produce and traditional harvest lore. Enjoy evening on the farm - a bucolic setting, the quiet sounds of evening in the country, a sense of 19th century rural Pennsylvania. From 4:00 to 6:30 pm small groups will go out every 20 minutes with the last one going at 6:30pm. The Farm to Table Experience takes place rain or shine.
At the workshop guests can sample a delicious, creamy carrot soup, a staple root crop in the family garden. A roasted beet salad in the one room school is where we will discover more about the root crop family. At the cellar kitchen enjoy the tastes of both dried corn and sweet corn and learn the difference. Nibble on a pumpkin dessert as you explore one of the most popular crops in the United States. Recipes will be shared.

The harvest tour takes about an hour and a half and is $15.00 per adult, $10.00 for children 3-12. Celebrate National Public Lands Day, National Bike to Park Day, and National Hunting & Fishing Day at this event sponsored by Senator Mario Scavello, Jacobsburg EE Center, and the Lehigh Valley Greenways Partnership. Activities will include a live animal presentation, fishing, archery, guided nature walks, and more!
The animal presentation starts at 12:30 and will be followed by a panel discussion with Senator Scavello, Chairman of the Senate Game and Fisheries Committee; PA Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary, Cindy Dunn; PA Game Commission Executive Director, Matthew Hough; and PA Fish and Boat Commission Executive Director, John Arway. Each panelist will present an update and receive questions and comments from the audience. Many exhibitors will be providing hands-on activities.

Annual Families First 5K
Families First is celebrating its 14th Anniversary serving residents in the Pen Argyl Area School District. Come join them for their 13th Annual 5-K Race & one Mile Fun Walk on Saturday, October 1, 2016, rain or shine. Registration for the race/walk will begin at the Wind Gap Borough Park at 7:45 a.m. with the race starting at 9:00 a.m.
This fundraising event is for the entire family, which includes a bake sale and Community Agencies information and raffles. All proceeds are used to support all of the FREE programs and activities provided by Families First. “PEOPLE HELPING PEOPLE” In the Pen Argyl Area School District.
Pre-registration is open at a fee of $20.00 per person or $40.00 for a family of three or more to encourage family participation. There is a special discount registration for students only $15.00. The Largest Youth Group/Team/Organization pre-registered for the 5-K Race or Walk will receive a Pizza Party. Entry includes a quality T-shirt for the first 100 registered, bagels, water, entertainment, door prizes, and the opportunity to support a worthwhile cause. Awards will be given for the fastest overall male and female and top three finishers in each age category. The one-mile fun walk is non-competitive.
