Sure, you should stock up on classic highlighters and yellow pencils, but why stop there? Why not reach for a binder with an elegant rose-foil design or a zipper pouch with a sassy slogan? Will these expressive touches make your kid study harder? They can’t hurt, especially if it makes them even a teensy bit excited to hit the books and stay organized. Here is a roundup of some of the year’s hottest trends for school supplies. Precious metals and metallic accents Who says the pocket calculator has to be a style buster? The Maze Calculator is dressed up with glitter for an instant accessory. Look for fun accents, such as metallic pencils and pens. Better Binders are stimulating with holographic patterns. Even backpacks, lunch bags and zipper pouches refuse to be anything but fabulous, as seen in a line that comes in metallic silver by designer Cynthia Rowley (find her line of school and office products exclusively at Staples).
Tropical themes This year’s hot tropical look is popping up all over back-to-school essentials. Toucans, pineapples and palm trees can be found on notebooks and backpacks, bringing some fun into the classroom. A collection of “beach umbrella” pencils in hues of orange, purple, blue and yellow from Ticonderoga are a great accent to brighten up your student’s day. Bohemian vibe Bold, intricate prints adorn Mead notebooks and Carolina Pad binders, evoking a romantic, free-spirited, hippie-chic fashion sense. Expressive sayings about traveling the world are found on Gartner Studios notebooks, taking students out of the classroom and on their own personal adventure. Fun with LOL cats “Cat selfies” and feline-themed vintage movie posters play up the laughs on C.R. Gibson 1-subject and composition notebooks. But if cute and cuddly is what your child likes, there is plenty of that as well. Spiral notebooks from Carolina Pad feature cute, graphic prints of large-eyed pandas, foxes and hedgehogs. Timeless Of course, classic never goes out of style, and you can find notebooks, pens, folders and more at the lowest prices thanks to the Less List for School at Staples. You can also save money on technology (calculators, USB drives, batteries and ear buds) and additional items like storage totes, tissue, hand sanitizer and more on the Less List for School. ![]() The Pen Argyl Football Seniors and Moms held a surprise scrimmage Thursday night at the school. PPL Scam In The Area In a scam attempt that has recently targeted residents in our area, PPL Electric Utilities customers are being called and told their account is delinquent and they need to make an immediate payment or have their electricity shut off. In many cases, customers are being told to pay with prepaid debit cards. They are being instructed to call a phony call center, where they are prompted to enter their account information.
In one brazen attempt, a scammer walked into a business pretending to be from PPL and demanded money under threat of a service shut-off, but was unsuccessful. In some cases, the bogus number has been set up to look on Caller ID like it is from PPL. PPL never sends anyone to demand payment; doesn’t call customers seeking personal information; never calls customers threatening shutoff unless immediate payment is made; and doesn’t accept Green DOT or other pre-paid debit cards for payments. Blueberry Festival at Faith Church![]() Pen Argyl, PA, August 2015: The first-ever Faith Church Blueberry Festival will be held in the Fellowship Hall at 218 W. Pennsylvania Ave Pen Argyl, PA on August 15, 2015 from 4:00pm to 7:00pm, rain or shine. This family fun event will also feature our first-ever Pie eating contest just for kids. Up to twenty children will be given the opportunity to see how fast they can eat a blueberry pie. This promises to be a real entertaining event with contest prizes given out to all kids that participate. Winners will be announced in the various age categories. And, as every good pie-eating contestant knows, no hands can be used and the pie must be eaten completely unassisted. Suffice to say there will be plenty of messy faces waiting for their selfie. “Not to worry Faith Church always stocks plenty of wipes,” said Lori Pensyl, coordinator of the clean-up crew. Also for the first time at a Faith Church Festival, we will have our famous Walking Tacos that simply have to be tried to be believed. What kind of Blueberry Festival would it be if there wasn’t a host of cool blueberry treats beginning with Blueberry Ice Cream, Blueberry Custard Pie, Blueberry Cheesecake, Blueberry Cakes, Blueberry Bars, Blueberry Muffins and lots of food? “The large number of blueberry desserts will provide a refreshing way to chase away those hot, dog days of August,” said Reverend Ruth Ann Christopher, Pastor of Faith United. The Ultimate Blueberry Custard Pie and Cheesecake are two treats that are recommended by our Faith Church dessert experts. There will be so many delicious blueberry offerings that you may have to visit the dessert area more than once. The video, recorded July 31 in Fort McMurray, shows a man riding a jet ski around a flooded street in the Alberta city amid heavy rains. The man said he pulled the stunt on a dare. "There was severe flooding in my area and one of my buddies decided to dare me to do it just joking around so I did," he wrote.
Food and Parenting...Tips for Healthy Eating While Dining Out![]() (BPT) - Whether they’re traveling, celebrating a special occasion or simply spending quality time together, families across the country enjoy going to restaurants and dining out together.
As consumers become more sophisticated in their tastes and diets, restaurateurs are re-engineering their menus to accommodate those needs. Today, more than ever before, restaurants are offering an array of healthful, delicious and great-tasting options that appeal to taste buds of all ages. "Many restaurants are updating their menus so children have more nutritious choices when they dine out," says Annika Stensson, the National Restaurant Association’s director of research communications. "More kids' menus feature fresh ingredients that are cooked creatively and make eating out not only healthful, but fun." National Restaurant Association data confirms that chefs and consumers are on the same page when it comes to offering better nutrition for kids at restaurants. Healthful children’s meals have become a top culinary trend. Even though there are more nutritious choices available for children, it can sometimes be confusing for parents to figure out the better options from the more indulgent ones. Healthy Dining founder Anita Jones-Mueller, MPH, has provided five simple tips to help parents find more healthful kids’ meals: 1. Seek out high-quality ingredients: Look for options that are made with unprocessed ingredients and have a flavor profile kids will love. There are lots of foods prepared in various ways that parents and children can choose from. Give salmon kabobs or grilled chicken strips a try. 2. Opt for more fresh veggies and fruit: When a meal includes fresh produce, kids not only get more nutrients, but also enjoy a rainbow of tantalizing colors. Look for kids’ meals that include salads, dippable sliced fruit or steamed vegetables. Fresh ingredients provide different textures that will keep young diners interested in their food. 3. Go for creativity: Kids have sophisticated palates so give them the opportunity to try new things. The fact is they like to have fun when eating out. Look for menus featuring creative kids’ meals. From bento boxes and kid-friendly sushi to turkey sliders and creative noodle bowls, chefs are thinking beyond the traditional to create fun and memorable items. 4. Look for lean proteins, whole grains: To ensure that kids feel full and satisfied after eating their meals, choose options made with lean proteins and whole grains. They are two important components of a well-rounded diet. Proteins and whole grains also help you feel fuller longer. 5. Use a trusted resource: The National Restaurant Association's Kids LiveWell program showcases restaurants that meet strict nutritional criteria for children's foods. Find Kids LiveWell restaurants atwww.healthydiningfinder.com or download the mobile app for quick reference on the go. Restaurant operators are increasingly committed to providing healthful meals for kids, and these tips can help parents select tasty, wholesome foods for their families.
