Newland Answers Roll Call At DNC![]() by Larry Cory
Jennifer Newland of Roseto was not going to let a side effect from a recent bout with cancer keep her from attending the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. After all, the councilwoman from Roseto received over 37,000 votes in the 17th U.S. congressional district as a Hilary Clinton pledged delegate, making the convention a huge priority. To participate in an event that could help shape national history is an honor and one she will never forget. Participating in the nomination of the first woman in history for president is a true historical event. “I kept thinking ‘pinch me’ this must be a dream,” she said. “Finally getting on the blue floor, just being there was an inspiration.” Since the convention was held in Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania delegation was host and got to sit close to the Virginia and New York delegations. The proximity also gave Newland a clear view of the event and she was also seen on national television . “Sitting there and having only steps between you and these great political figures take you back,” she said. “I don’t ever want to forget this moment.” Beyond the roll call, the speeches and other political activities, Newland also had a chance to interact with other people from all walks of life, including Jesse Jackson. “I got to know him and a lot of people think that he is so outspoken,” she said. “But he is such a genuine loving man. He was not what I expected.” She also became acquainted with delegates from other parts of the state and country which she found to be “inspiring and motivational.”“We sat with people from Philly everyday,” she said. “We had great conversation about what goes on in Philly with issues versus the Slate Belt. It was neat to talk about those differences.” Sitting only 15 feet from the podium also gave her an up-close view of how things were done. For example, the signs that everyone at home saw on television were given to the delegates by people carrying garbage bags full of signs, then handing them out and telling everyone when to raise them. The big moment, however, was voting. “Roll call was very serious,” she said. “We each took our pledge very serious.” On the down side, there was one death threat that Newland received and one threat of physical violence.. Newland is a relative newcomer to the political scene. After some community service in the area she ran for Roseto Borough Council four years ago and won on her first try. From there she jumped into other aspects of political life, supporting State Senator Matt Cartwright and now Hilary Clinton. She’s not saying what may loom ahead in politics, but going to another convention would be a no-brainer. “Absolutely,” she said. “I would be there in a moment’s notice.” Regarding Hilary, Newland says she is already looking at gowns for the inauguration. ![]() The Pen Argyl Football Seniors and Moms held a surprise scrimmage Thursday night at the school. Lifeguard Jasper Solomon said a swimming class for kids ages 3-6 was in progress Thursday at King Middle School in Berkeley when a deer ran out onto the pool deckand plunged into the water mere feet away from the swimming children. Solomon and his boss, Adonis Boyd, quickly ushered the children and parents out of the pool before setting about using floatation devices to help the deer. "Our staff is trained in dealing with lots of emergencies but never a deer in the pool,"Denise Brown, Berkeley's Recreation and Youth Service Manager, told KPIX-TV. "They sprang into action!" Solomon and Boyd helped the deer float toward the pool steps. "The staff kind of gently led the deer to the pool steps and the little deer sprung out of the pool and ran into the bushes," Brown told KABC-TV. The deer did not appear to be injured, witnesses said. Staff treated the water and tested it for contamination before the children got back in to resume their lesson.
Food...Lighten Up Your Grill![]() (NewsUSA) - Sponsored News - It's time to dust off the grills, pile up the charcoal and break out the oversized spatula because grilling season is here! With school out for the summer, it's time for families to gear up for barbecue parties filled with tasty grilled grub. If you're looking to whip up barbecue favorites at your next family cookout but still want to keep the menu lean, follow these go-to tips for lightened up versions of classic dishes that don't sacrifice an ounce of flavor.
* Ditch the Traditional Bun: If you're looking to cut calories and pack in an extra serving of veggies for the kids, consider swapping your traditional hamburger and hot dog buns for creative and delicious veggie alternatives. Refrigerator staples from zucchini and romaine lettuce to sweet potato can quickly transform into slider and sausage buns. For added flavor and a meatier texture, cook your veggies on the grill with a brush of olive oil, salt and pepper. * Grill Lean(er) Meat: Believe it or not, there is a way to eat clean and lean without sacrificing the taste you love from richer cuts of meat. Chicken breasts, skinless chicken thighs, pork loin and even flank steak are all excellent options for leaner cuts. Fewer calories aren't the only bonus -- the lack of excess fat will cause fewer flare-ups on the grill. If you're a fan of hot dogs or bratwurst, consider looking for a leaner seasoned sausage to swap so flavor isn't sacrificed. Simply Savory Smoked Sausages from Land O'Frost are available in a variety of bold flavors, including bacon and cheddar, chipotle and roasted red pepper, and Italian style with pepper and mozzarella. These sausages have 35 percent less fat and no artificial flavors, MSG and fillers often found in hot dogs and sausage products. * Tangy Twist: Instead of dousing chicken and pork in store-bought barbeque sauces that are high in sugar, consider squeezing the juice of fresh lemon or limes over meat. If you're feeling a little bit more adventurous, swap out the tangy taste for a sweeter fruit. Adding pineapple or orange juice can offer the sweet flavors you're craving without the added sugar. With these simple tricks in mind, fire up the grill and get ready to create a healthier barbecue for your family and friends. For coupons and more information about Land O'Frost's Simply Savory Sausages, visit www.landofrost.com.
Money...What is $186,000,000![]() To the life insurance industry, $186 million represents the fulfillment of promises made to policy owners who turned to life insurers to protect their families' financial futures.
$186 million is the amount insurers deliver every day in life insurance benefits. For the families receiving these benefits, life insurance proceeds represent the financial peace of mind that comes with knowing that they can maintain their quality of life, pay for their children's education and realize their hopes and dreams after the death of a loved one. Life insurers have a long history of fulfilling their obligations to policy owners and their families. Companies act promptly to pay benefits, usually within 30 days of receiving a claim. In a small percentage of cases, life insurance policies go unclaimed because family members may not have known that a policy existed. If no claim is made, the policy benefits are transferred to the state in accordance with state laws. Life insurers want beneficiaries to receive their benefits before the state can claim the money. In recent years, many companies have been doing more than is required by law. They are making better use of technology to identify policy owners who have died, locate beneficiaries and help them begin the process to claim their benefits. The American Council of Life Insurers wants all life insurers to try to identify deceased policy owners and seek out beneficiaries. That is why ACLI has been advocating since 2012 for all states to adopt legislation requiring companies to regularly compare their records against the Social Security Administration's Death Master File, which tracks deaths. If companies find a match, they should try to locate the beneficiaries and help them file a claim. Twenty states have enacted laws requiring the comparison of company records with the Death Master File. Several others are considering similar laws. While life insurers work to ensure that fewer policies go unclaimed by beneficiaries, policy owners have an important role to play as well. If you own a life insurance policy, let your beneficiaries know where it is located. Keep it with other financial records or legal papers, or anywhere your survivors are likely to look for it if they need to file a claim. Keep your agent's name and contact information easily accessible. The agent can help your beneficiaries fill out the necessary forms and act as an intermediary with the insurance company. PUMP Moving to New Location A dedication for the new location of the Portland-Upper Mt Bethel Food Pantry (PUMP) will be held on Sunday, August 21 at 2:00 PM. The public is invited to attend the dedication. PUMP’s new location is at the Portland Hook & Ladder Co. William Pensyl Social Hall, 111 State Street, Portland.
Twenty-two years ago when Sherma LaBarre Godshalk felt the urge to help people needing food, she started PUMP with a few volunteers, a card table, and some donated canned vegetables from her church, Portland United Methodist. Sadly, Sherma died in April 2015, but her wish to see PUMP continue to help people in the Slatebelt area, continues. In recent months over 400 limited resource families from Bangor, East Bangor, Pen Argyl, Wind Gap, Portland, Upper Mt Bethel and Martins Creek communities, came to the pantry seeking help for themselves and their families. PUMP has outgrown its current location. The board and many volunteers have spent countless hours working on a new plan. The new location will provide larger and more efficient space, better parking, easier access to the building, more efficient storage and set-up of food items, easier unloading from the food trucks, easier access for clientele to name a few benefits. Safe Haven Dog Adoption Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, at Tractor Supply, Rt. 940, Mt Pocono.
Safe Haven will have many adorable dogs available for you to meet and get to know. Safe Haven requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit prior to adoption. Safe Haven Pet Rescue is a small group of dedicated volunteers from the West End of the Poconos who save highly adoptable dogs from high kill and overcrowded shelters and finds them loving homes. Shelter killing is the number one cause of dog deaths and Safe Haven has saved more than 800 lives so far. Safe Haven Rescue needs volunteers to help with adoption days, fundraising, transporting dogs to vets and groomers and fostering homeless dogs until they find their forever homes.
