Think you’re ready for the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang? The Winter Games are set to begin this Friday, Feb. 9, with the opening ceremony--and there’s a lot more to it than skiing stars, crazy curling pants and a tenuous diplomatic truce between North and South Korea. From soft-pedaled doping bans to high-flying new events to the frigid temperatures in South Korea’s Olympic stadium, here’s your cheat sheet to the biggest stories around the 2018 Winter Olympics.
Russia’s kinda-sorta ban Officially, Russia was barred from sending a team to PyeongChang as penance for its elaborate state-supported doping scheme at the Sochi Olympics. But 28 Russian athletes had their doping bans overturned and 169 athletes who were deemed clean by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will each compete as an “Olympic Athlete from Russia.” They won’t march under their nation’s flag or hear its anthem if they medal—but they’ll ensure that Russia’s presence is felt. New Winter Olympics events Some new Olympics events will make their debut in PyeongChang: the Alpine team competition, in which 16 countries square off in a mixed-gender slalom tournament; big-air snowboarding (boarders ascend to the top of a tower, then fly off a 160-ft. ramp); mixed doubles curling, which features two curlers—a man and a woman—on a squad rather than the usual four; and mass-start speedskating (think a very crowded oval). Age is just a number No sporting event mixes young and old quite like the Olympics. German speedskater Claudia Pechstein, 45, will become the first woman to compete in seven Winter Olympics Games; in the 5,000m, she’s seeking to become the oldest Winter Olympic medalist in an individual event. Team USA’s oldest member, hockey player Brian Gionta, 39, spurned offers from the NHL so he could return to the Winter Games a dozen years after his previous Olympic appearance. (For the first time since 1994, NHL players will not compete in the Olympics.) Americans Kelly Clark (snowboarding), Kikkan Randall (cross-country skiing) and Shani Davis (speedskating) are all appearing in their fifth Olympics. The youngest U.S. Olympian is figure skater Vincent Zhou, 17. Six nations making Winter Olympics debut Ecuador, Eritrea, Kosovo, Malaysia, Nigeria and Singapore are all participating in their first Winter Games in PyeongChang. Computer-science student Shannon-Ogbani Abeda, 21, will represent Eritrea; his parents fled the East African nation in the 1980s during the War of Independence and settled as refugees in Alberta, where Abeda grew up skiing. Frigid temperatures If you’re watching the Winter Olympics from the comfort of your own home, be thankful. While temperatures in Vancouver and Sochi could be downright balmy, these Games could be the coldest since 1994, when Lillehammer, Norway, was host. One recent temperature reading from the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium: –8°F. For the opening ceremony, Polo Ralph Lauren will outfit Team USA in heated parkas powered by a battery pack. December 2017 - Staff members from HDOnTap and Codorus State Park worked through the cold and wind to replace and rewire cables at the nest site. Some of the nest had fallen. Showtimes: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. THIS DAY IN HISTORY - February 9Satchel Paige nominated to Baseball Hall of Fame 1971 On this day in 1971, pitcher Leroy “Satchel” Paige becomes the first Negro League veteran to be nominated for the Baseball Hall of Fame. In August of that year, Paige, a pitching legend known for his fastball, showmanship and the longevity of his playing career, which spanned five decades, was inducted. Joe DiMaggio once called Paige “the best and fastest pitcher I’ve ever faced.” Paige was born in Mobile, Alabama, most likely on July 7, 1906, although the exact date remains a mystery. He earned his nickname, Satchel, as a boy when he earned money carrying passengers’ bags at train stations. Baseball was segregated when Paige started playing baseball professionally in the 1920s, so he spent most of his career pitching for Negro League teams around the United States. During the winter season, he pitched for teams in the Caribbean and Central and South America. As a barnstorming player who traveled thousands of miles each season and played for whichever team met his asking price, he pitched an estimated 2,500 games, had 300 shut-outs and 55 no-hitters. In one month in 1935, he reportedly pitched 29 consecutive games. In 1947, Jackie Robinson broke baseball’s color barrier and became the first African American to play in the Major Leagues when he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers. The following year, Paige also entered the majors, signing with the Cleveland Indians and becoming, at age 42, baseball’s oldest rookie. He helped the Indians win the pennant that year and later played for the St. Louis Browns and Kansas City A’s.

This service is offered on the second Tuesday of each month. Lineworker Info Session at NCC
NCC will hold an information session about its lineworker program on February 14 and 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the Bethlehem Campus. The session will be held in Alumni 130 A – D. The session will give prospective students the opportunity to meet the instructors, learn about the program and gain information about potential sources of financial assistance for qualified candidates. This hands-on, non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception in 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical and telecommunications fields. During the 12 week course, which includes 375 hours of instruction, students will learn to safely and efficiently climb 40m floor utility poles, construct assemblies while on poles, use a variety of hand tools and understand the basics of electricity. Feb. 19 – Bring your family to see our furry friends from the Arctic Paws Dog Sled Tours. Learn how these adorable canines train, the different roles of the dog team, and become a musher. Showtimes: 11 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m. Lineworker Info Session at NCC NCC will hold an information session about its lineworker program on February 19 at 5:00 p.m. at the Bethlehem Campus. The session will be held in Alumni 130 A – D. The session will give prospective students the opportunity to meet the instructors, learn about the program and gain information about potential sources of financial assistance for qualified candidates. This hands-on, non-credit course is taught by instructors with lineworker experience and has been popular since its inception in 2013. It prepares students for entry-level linework in the electrical and telecommunications fields. During the 12 week course, which includes 375 hours of instruction, students will learn to safely and efficiently climb 40m floor utility poles, construct assemblies while on poles, use a variety of hand tools and understand the basics of electricity. Veterans Assistance Day in Pen Argyl
Senator Mario Scavello (R-40) and the American Legion will be holding a Veterans Assistance Day on Wednesday, February 21 at the senator’s Pen Argyl district office. This service is offered on the third Wednesday of each month. The district office is located at 2 N. Robinson Avenue, Pen Argyl, PA 18072. From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., a service officer with the American Legion Pennsylvania Department will be on site to assist veterans with issues including: compensation and pension claims, education benefits, enrollment in the VA health care system, burial and survivor benefits, state benefits, and obtaining military personnel and medical records. Demonstration for the Slate Belt Heritage Center Bangor Quarry Hoist will be held Thursday, July 12 at 7 PM - 8 PM at 1st Street and Market Street, Bangor, Pennsylvania 18013 The Bangor Quarry Hoist has booked its first event! On Thursday, July 12, 2018, at 7 PM, it will operate for the Slate Belt Heritage Center's monthly program, which will occur at the Hoist. The program will detail the restoration of the hoist and feature a live demonstration.
